I thought it was only a battle if they're up against each other?

According to Littleduck, the Battle of Waterloo took place over two days...

The British turned up one day but left cos no-one else was there.
The French turned up the next day.

It's always a battle and a wins a win regardless, but some battles are a fairer than others in terms of the live/delayed/replayed distinction and its only fair to put each audience figure in context.

And this is the one that counts, Bronco's average will drop by years end, while the Lions will remain pretty much the same.

Also Hicham, the numbers for Brisbane's NRL attendances in 2005 are bloated because of the game against the Cowboys. The Lions beat the Broncos last year for home game attendance by an average of just on 5,000 people.

True, it was given a boost by the Cowboys, but why is that an issue? Cowboys games in recent years (given the Cowboys history of cellar dwelling) would be lucky to get 20-25,000 at ANZ Stadium. The Broncos have matches against Canterbury, Sydney, St.George/Illawarra and others to come, so it'll be boosted again. It's also made increases against the same games from last year so far this season. Brisbane crowds have been going up by an average of 4,000 a year for the past few years as they've finally left ANZ Stadium and gone back to Suncorp. Given the current results and the home draw ahead, Brisbane look odds on to continue that rate of increase IMO.

Hicham.

The Brisbane Lions match should be 190,000 viewers considering some Brisbane residents went to the match, whereas they couldn't go to the Rugby League match the night before.

The Lions' home crowds have also gone up by 8,000 over the past two years. The only limiting factor for the Lions is that the Gabba only holds 37,600, which they will probably average this year or next, and after the redevelopment is finished it will still hold only 42,000, whereas Suncorp was recently expanded to hold 52,000.

Price of admission also has an influence on attendances eg: did you know that a gold class at Suncorp is about $43, a gold class at the Gabba is about $110. In general, a decent seat at Suncorp is cheaper and more affordable than a decent seat at the Gabba. The fact that the Gabba charges so much and they still get over 30 000 people amazes me !!

Err, the Broncos game was on Sunday. And it was in Brisbane. And it was perviously shown on Fox. So let's bump their total up to 275K and then some.

Agreed.

I was comparing the Lions game to the Friday night NRL game.

I propose the Queensland governmant knockdown 'Movie World' and in it's place, build an 80k Football Stadium. Gold Coast Sharks and Brisbane Lions could play all their high drawing games there instead.

Works for me!

The point about the relative cost of entry is a good one, the Lions must be doing much better financially compared to the Broncos. Of course, if the Lions do start getting capacity crowds of 42,000 at home games, that opens up the prospect of live TV coverage in Brisbane...

Give up LittleGoose

AFL is and always will be the most popular spectator sport in Australia.

Go away and stop trying so hard

Try living in Brisbane, or NSW for that matter. Going on free to air broadcasts, AFL is nothing. Up here I've even seen an AFL broadcast cut short (about 5 mins before the end of a live Port v Essendon game) so the thugby league could start on time. Not only is this an insult to AFL fans, it is a good indication of the popularity of league in these 2 states.
Might be the most popular sport in Australia, but not yet in Qld and NSW.
