Umm, my avatar is "Chudrilla", a Roys FFC mascot from eons gone past.

It's cartoon fat gorilla, with an early Roys FFC guernsey added via MS Paint, to create a Roys mascot. Then an image of the horror movie icon C.H.U.D. was added to create Chudrilla. Finally I once found I had made two slightly differently cropped versions of the image so turned them into a GIF so it'd pulse.

He rarely speaks, but when he does, we don't listen anyway.


Other avatars I'd used in the past included an original Roys FFC logo, hammerdance, Deanna Durbin (deannadance) and SCOTT STERLING!!!


There's been a few others but meh.

This is a picture of me the day after I won my second AFL Premiership.



I originally had Jack Riewoldt & Mr. Brightside as my avatar because it's my favourite sporting moment I've experienced live. It became too difficult to shoops of me with two heads so I choose Jack Riewoldt on his own (Thanks for that piece of advice Tigerturbulance ), it almost became the picture of Jack & Tom lynch on the golf cart after the 2020 Grand Final--- that might be my next long term one.

So last week I took a look at all of your avatars.

All 303 of them.

There were some things that stood out while doing this. The most obvious one was "Why are you wasting your time on this bullshit, Bob?" but once I got over that I noticed that there were certain themes that were appearing. I then did something called Affinity Clustering, which is where you take a whole bunch of diverse things and group them into clusters that have a certain similarity. Here's what I found...

Having sportspeople as avatars made up the largest cluster of similar avatars, with 79 of the 303 SFA people (26%) choosing have pictures of sportspeople representing them visually. The next biggest cohort is the artists, whether they are actors, musicians or an ancient Roman poet. There are 68 of these, or 22% of the SFA. Next up are the 18% of posters who identify as cartoons (54 in total), while finally there were 43 animal avatars, which makes up 14% of the total.

Add these four groupings together and you get 244 out of the 303 SFA posters, or 81% of the SFA which once again affirms the old 80/20 rule. Of the remaining 19% there are things like A Swallow and his plane, Agent93 GremioPower & Broken with their logos, former dictators like former Bomber Santoz (RIP) or posters like Tony Lynn 15 Hate and Blacky whose avatars I have no idea where they came from.

Across the various teams, the proportion of players that have one of these types of avatars are as follows:

Great question, imaginary reply person in my head. Well this forum is based on randomly generated sportsball contests, and that's where the Battle of the Avatars comes into it. This week will see four avatar-based qooty teams enter the Qunderdome and face off against each other, with the overall winners getting God only knows what, but I'm sure that I'll rustle up some imaginary award.

Coming up in my next series of posts I'll go into further details about each of the four teams. Let's goooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

I thought this was a very interesting investigation, which might have some interesting insight into group culture, but unfortunately you spent a lot of time collating, and then provided absolutely no insight.

The next biggest of the four avatar groups are the Cartoons. Consisting of 54 posters across all SFA teams, by far the biggest sub-group here are characters from cartoons created by Matt Groening. So if you want to blame anybody for this group, blame him.
