Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

I think you will find it depends on the ball. Anyone can swing a ball on their day. To say that every opener should swing the ball all the time shows your lack of knowledge.

More likely pitch, weather conditions and the skill of the bowler determines that shotta.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Will be interested to see how Graeme Swann goes against a first rate batting side. Think he's taken the most wickets in tests over the last year. Hope he gets taken to by Hughes and co.

MJ will not swing it with the new ball with his current action. his "round arm" approach makes it nearly impossible for the seam to remain upright.. simple as that.. and given that we have the doyan of swing Troy Cooley as a coach I am guessing it must have something to do with MJ's past back problems that mean he cannot get his arm higher.

Spot on B n G. The release is also a key point as MJ's tends to follow the arc rather than having the arm follow straight down, which helps to promote the correct seam and wrist position.

Damien Fleming would have the most technically perfect wrist and seam position for swing bowling perhaps to ever represent Australia. It was beautiful.

BIT LIKE MY BOWLING HEY STEVE?

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Was keen when JL, Hayden, Martyn, Pigeon, Gilly & Warnie we're in the team.

Now I couldn't care less. All playing like crap. Especially Ponting & Lee.

Lets talk Left hand bowlers bowling to right hand batsmen:
A side on action will promote the ball to move away from the batsman.
A open chested slinging action promotes the ball to move into the batsman. MJ was able to get swing in Australia and moved it into the right hander. His slinging action was also handy in that straight balls moved away from the right hander.
Wasim Akram was a slinger of the ball & he got good late inswing while using his slant to move the ball across the right hander to get the edge.
Akram was that good that he could bowl in & outswing.

Don't get too muddled in action & technique. It obviously helps a great deal & yes Fleming was technically great but Akram was better.

Ian Baker Finch supposedly had the most beautiful swing in golf but if anyone has seen Lee Trevino & his action then you'd wonder why the mexican was so much better.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Although we've got a spud in Hauritz, there's enough variety & talent in our quicks to bowl the poms out twice in each test.

My worry is Siddle, Hilf, Bing & Clarke are injury prone. 5 tests in 7 weeks is a heavy workload.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

MJ can swing it into right handers.
His action dictates it.

Yeah i remember last season against SA he started to swing the old ball back into the right handers. Reverse swing if you can master it, is one hell of a weapon. Im tipping he'll get it going in England as well.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Bring back Mark Waugh... He is the definition of elegance.
Mark Waugh used to piss me off so much.
All the skills but mentally fragile. When he did get his hundred he would switch off & lose his wicket.

If only Steve Waugh's brain was in Marks head. that would make a modern day Bradman run machine. :)
Of course it was awesome having both Waugh's. mark just frustrated me.

Yeah i know, it was beautiful watching him bat when he was switched on.

I like this combination:

MJ - Inswingers, slanting away from right handers, bounce, has Cnut in him & likes to hurt batsmen ( grahame Smith )
Siddle: accuracy, seam, some swing, has Cnut in him & wants to hurt batsmen
Clarke: accuracy, seam, bounce
Hilfenhouse: swings both ways at a decent pace, can get bounce.

Lee: carry the drinks
Hauritz: Enjoy the trip & pick up chicks to make that your highlight.

I like it. We need to find a genuine spinner and stick with him.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

I am not a Lee fan at all... but given he's getting some reverse swing now I'd have him in the team before Hilf... but of course this injury cloud has thrown all that up in the air anyway.

The first test is going to be very interesting from the POV of Hauritz's career. If he gets no or few wickets, on a pitch that will supposedly turn, then it's curtains for him. If, for eg, North takes more wickets than him, then you'd have to say there's no point persisting with Hauritz.

Personally, I hope BPS tears them up, I really think he can.

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Whats worse?

a) People that go out of their way to watch and follow cricket

b) People whos lives are so empty that they actually play cricket on the weekends

:eek::eek:

Re: Bay 13 Ashes thread

Clueless... His scrambled seam dictates that he doesn't swing it in
Really, how did he swing into the Sth Africans recently.
I guess Akram couldn't swing it either with his action. His action must scramble the seam.

You actually think you are watching the seam from your spot in the outer at the MCG or from your armchair
