At the end of this article about Mcleod being close to coming back, Rutten says it would be fantastic if he were honoured with the captaincy. I believe Rutten has been a rock for us in defence this year. However after last years semi final i don't think he should be considered for this job. Clearly (for me) the arm hold was a sign of mental scarring as a result of too many failed finals campaigns. What was really scarey was watching the Hawthorn V Adelaide match. Every time a Hawthorn forward looked remotely like beating his adelaide opponent we simply made sure we gave a free by holding or pushing, immitating the Semi.

Was wondering others oppinions on whether Rutten should be considered or whether one indiscretion should rule someone out completely?, also if others saw signs that the semi has affected the number and types of frees we have given away this year?

Having said that , I am very happy Rutten is our full back and has resigned.

all fullbacks scrag and grab arms/jumpers when they can particularly when the umpire is on the side that they think they can get away with it, its nothing to get hysterical about.

I'd be happy to see Truck as captain. I don't buy into the thought that captains must be midfielders or forwards.

Bollocks. That's tin foil hat lunatic conspiracy thinking.

This. :thumbsu:

Fair enough. It's only a matter of opinion, as I really don't like the idea of a FB being captain, as I much prefer the captain to be closer to the play so that he can takl to and motivate the men that he leads.

My choice is and always has been VB, although that has softened slightly with the rise of Dangerfield.

Appointing Rutten as captain would mean that it would be ready to be given to Patrick when he is at his very peak and has had time to mature as a person.

I would still go with VB as captain and Dangerfield as a very young VC, but I'm certainly not opposed to a Rutten to Dangerfield lineage.

Couldn't have put it better myself :thumbsu:

Don't know what I think of Rutten as captain. Given the stage of his career, it'd make for an almost perfect succession plan to get Danger into the captaincy when Truck retires...I like.

Having said that, I also really want Knights to be our captain. He's the right age, got all the attributes that I want to see in a captain, and he can hold down the job for a long time.

Each path certainly has its own merits, and ultimately a leader is a leader regardless of title, we can get hung up on this sometimes.

Ah, just beat me to it :D

I don't know about you, but I'm sure not thinking things through at this level at all when I'm on the field.

I read an interview with Truck about the holding decision in last years final and he said the umpires hadnt been paying those holding free kicks all night so it was just random that they decided to pay it then.

As for the captain... Co-Captains?

Anyone here reckon Scotty Thompson is a chance? Just about our best midfielder but can go missing when the going gets tough, still I reckon hes a better option than truck and may encourage him to stay if he wants to go to GC

Can someone put Fox Sports News on, when it gets to the story about whether to use caffeine tablets for a performance boost, and wait untill they show Rutten

am I the only person I saw

Benjamin Rutten
Adelaide Captain

underneath him in an interveiw?

(next story was about the team, but it had Ben Rutten Adelaide defender underneath footage of his interveiw)

I don't think Rutten would be a horrendous decision, however I am still in the VB for Captain/Danger for Vice Captain camp. I've actually moved closer to the thinking that Danger would be brilliant, but I wonder if it's important to let him get his game consistent before bestowing that sort of additional pressure on him?

I'm hoping Rutten gets the job as captain, I don't think Van Berlo does enough on field to be a Captain. I reckon Truck would be great. A big solid, reliable unit who always gives his best, who remains healthy.

and is on the ground all game as opposed to playing for 6mins, going off for 5mins, playing for 6mins, going off for 4mins, playing for 6mins .... QTR TIME .... play for 6mins etc and so forth

Being cheeky here but do you think it's worth waiting for VB to get his game, and participation in games, consistent before he is made Captain?

Good post. I'm not sure VB has quite developed like everyone expected him too. I reckon the concerns about Danger not being ready are also valid for VB. Would love to see VB on top of his game before he is made captain. On this basis I can see Rutten being named captain.

I do not believe that Van Berlo is a good enough player to be captain. Dangerfield is the best option but needs to get to the top of his game (maybe 2 years). It would make sense to make Truck the interim captain for 2 years and then give it to Dangerfield, rather than give it to Van Berlo then take it away.

No I wouldn't have Rutten as Captain.

Big defenders that carry that much mass just seem to struggle later in their careers, and I don't have confidence in him remaining in the best 22 as he gets closer to 30.

If he is to become captain i'd like to see him work on his endurance and lose some weight to take the pressure off his body. That much mass and muscle puts an enourmous strain on your body. I think thats a big reason why guys like Fletcher have been able to play at a high level for so long, even Hart is another example.

Oh, and Scott Thompson is my choice for Captain, been outstanding for us, and is a fearless on field leader.
