Bendigo FL discussion 2024

How many kids from Castlemaine were nominated by the club

I know of a country club that nominated three under 18s that had played senior footy in a top 2 side in arguably the second best comp in the district that never got selected, they also nominated two under 16 to try and get them in the system, nothing again. You can understand that the Bendigo clubs aren’t really gunna push back on this as it actually helps them

For me it’s the attitude that’s been shown that’s the issue rather than any assistance.

Professor Carol Lundgren was pretty quick to react with ‘if he dies, he dies’ when Maryborough first hit the skids and yet Broadford seem to be receiving a warm welcome despite having no visible positives for the league that any of us can see.

I suppose the next logical step for those of us disenfranchised with the leadership is to be wary that they will indeed follow up with concessions for Broadford because we’ve seen time and again how they look after their pets.

In other news Crazymaggy2020 is there any truth to the whispers I’m hearing that the Castlemaine boys at Gissy attended more functions with their former club than present this year? Culture huh?
Professor Carol Lundgren??? You forgot who Carol is. Please name the 6 best kids in Castlemaines under 16s so the Sandhurst recruiters know. Did you watch any under age Castlemaine games this year? Believe it or not I did.

The central Murray U18 league B&F didn’t get selected either.

You need to brush up on your Rocky history, see Drago v Creed.

The thing is I don’t need to tell them the names because they do it every year anyway either directly or under the guise of the ADP.

The Kyneton lad who went to strath played a lot of senior footy and features in each of straths finals. You said yourself the kid is an out and out star and would have made the Coates league squad of every team no matter where he played
No he didn’t, he didn’t play one game in the seniors!

You'd probably ask why didn't he play more senior footy, plenty of guys have won that medal and weren't close to playing pios too

Pretty sure this could be asked of any junior league medalist but if the kid has won the cmfl bnf and is still at the age to be eligible for the regions top under 18 squad you’d be hard pressed to find a anyone that thinks the kid doesn’t deserves a crack at taking his footy further or as someone said before it might as well be the bfnl inter league side

Why does the discussion around Pioneers nominations not involve any names?
Lots of accusations about the selection process but little use of detail. Plenty of suggestions that this kid here or that kid there were crucified but no names mentioned.

And while I'm at, is everybody in here really so naive as to believe that the best kid at each club in the region should make the squad? The squad exists to identify and develop potential AFL talent, not reward a kid for being the best player at his local club. If you're an early developed man child with no scope for significant improvement, who bullies smaller kids with his size and is an ordinary kick, should you really make the squad? The 205cm kid that can run but currently isn't much good is always going to get a look because he already has an AFL attribute and talent development will hopefully assist with gaining others.

Happy to acknowledge the Pios history on field is hardly stellar but the competition is unique within the football world. It doesn't exist to reward kids like an interleague squad, or indeed to win games specifically, it exists purely to produce talent for AFL clubs to consider.

195cm, just what the Dr ordered.

The pios area is far too large to get an idea. As are most regional areas. Look at how disadvantaged kids are from Mildura and the costs involved to play if they don't get a scholarship.

It just shows it should be scrapped. Play school footy and for your local club and play under 22 interleague. Clubs will still find you, I bet there's plenty of max rookes still out there

Just think how many players were picked up in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s through country zones.

If each club put on an extra recruiter or two to view footage of matches during the week and attend some country matches on the weekend, as Trent the flight Steward said, clubs will find them, whether they be young or mature-aged players.

Seems to have created a stir when this squad was announced, must be a few Bendigo kids missing out. Stand by for an addy article.

The whole system is stuffed and needs an overhaul but the same people who need to pull the trigger on that are the ones benefiting from it so good luck hoping for change.

Castlemaine won the under 16 second division flag this year. Problem was they asked to be in division one where they were happy to be a middle of the road side and were knocked back.
Kids trying out for these squads are given the message loud and clear that their best chance of selection is to be playing in division one.
Call me a cynic but I find it very hard to believe that hasn’t been deliberately orchestrated to drag kids into a few Bendigo clubs.

In fairness to the league administrators, you had a 6 team division 1, a five team division 2 (which, yes, Castlemaine dominated with the four very talented lads they have who might be in line to play rep football given they play Saturday football, two with Harcourt, two with Castlemaine) and only division 3 had a sustainable eight teams. Castlemaine going up to div 1 would have meant no division 2. I don't think there were any winners here whatsoever.

I am not convinced Castlemaine would have been middle of the road as their talent drops off quickly which is reflected in the fact they have always only really been competitive in division 2 football for many years. And I probably seen, more than most, Castlemaine junior footy over the last few years.
