Bendigo FL discussion 2024

I know of one player who has gone to Rochy for 2024 that’s on triple and change more than he was on at his previous club. And he wasn’t on bottom dollar in 2023 either.

Hang on - no that can’t be right . Because they have a great culture and players go there because they enjoy stopping off to look at the painted murals - Nothing to do with the $1000s of dollars they get

I can confirm a Kyneton kid 19 maybe 20 now has signed at Rochy this year on 1000, + a sign on.

Nearly triple what he was getting last year, give me a spell they all travel for love

Not that the last few posts on here deserve a reply because you are most likely under the age of 16.
But please don’t try to tarnish a well ran club by spreading absurd stuff because yours is up against it. If McGee is on $1000 then o’keefe must be on $2000 and Jansen in 2022 must have been on $3000.

All of them - the pies aren’t that good in Koroit / Kyabram / rochy - give me a break if you think players are driving there for the love of it ! They would be in the same if not worse trouble as Maryborough if they weren’t spending at least double the cap !

You are good for mirth with another of your typically unsubstantiated posts.

Perhaps it is about culture and a strong committee who make informed decisions? Steve Stroobants and James Flaherty were coaches prior to 2023 when Ash Watson took over. Daniel Schmidt coached Rochy for a lengthy period prior to that. Do you think it's plausible that Schmidt or Flaherty might have a small role in Rochy recruiting Bendigo players? Not saying they have but there is a bit to be said about strong club culture and word of mouth.

Ps The bbq marinated chicken sandwiches at Moon Oval are worth coming back for. 😁

Rochy always pay well unders, why don't you ask how much ash watson a former afl player played for after he came back to rochy
Dirty Williams set it up when he came back from Melbourne as coach in 1992. By the end of his reign he was coaching for free which set an example for local players. Yes the club would still buy imports but the culture allowed that and some didnt last long. Rochy have not quite got back to their halcyon days of dominance of the 1960s in the Bendigo League but they have certainly been competitive and sustainable over that entire period until now.

I see clubs throw huge money at players for a brief period of success before spiralling back towards the bottom of the ladder. Rochester make finals most years. I doubt I could make it easier to understand.

I often wonder how much actual involvement people that post on here have with clubs and what knowledge they have of the actual ins and outs of operating a club in the current day.

There’s wildly differing views on here and I think that explains why a lot of the time.

Are you saying posters may be making stuff up??? 😆

Not necessarily, but perhaps there’s some speculation with either outdated or inaccurate basis.

Think it is very difficult for anyone outside clubs to know exactly what spending is happening. Not exactly a topic of conversation people share freely.

Kyabram is also a lot closer inbetween two major towns than Maryborough is - half an hour to Echuca and Shepparton vs 55 minutes to Bendigo and Ballarat. To me, I reckon that kind of accessibility to those kinds of towns plays a part in Kyabram's success vs Maryborough's, as does the ageing population the town has. Maybe it sounds silly, I don't know. But living in the town, that's the way I'm seeing it.
Interesting to read all the thoughts about the Maryborough FNC. As someone with close ties to the club and who helps out from time to time I provide the following thoughts,

- the club is in a financially sound position and has a long term view of being sustainable to hopefully be successful. Have secured all their younger players which is a great start considering the offers from neighbouring clubs that are far more substantial than what the club offered. That is a good sign of club culture, loyalty and the character of these individuals.

- the club has been actively recruiting in what is a challenging market. Many clubs paying way over the mark for so called quality recruits that may provide short term success and then be gone chasing the dollar elsewhere.

- some players have gone elsewhere over the years the club would have liked to retain for what I would describe as ‘absurd’ money. Individuals that have experience but their best days as a player are behind them in some circumstances.

- Maryborough is an older and ageing community. There is not a lot there for young people when they finish school so they leave and often never return. The promising thing at this time is many of these younger men have left and are returning to play for the club.

- the merged club is a good thing for the town but it doesn’t solve any issues as such. There are still too many clubs in the area chasing the same local player pool and supplementing this with recruits from regional cities and Melbourne, often on ridiculous payment arrangements with perks aplenty.

- on field the club has struggled but the club continues to provide a place for young people to play sport and be a part of their growth and development as people. Good sporting clubs have an ability to do this and Maryborough has done it in spades for years. The quality of people involved with the committee and the general operation of the club are as good as I have encountered over my very long time in football at various levels.

- at this time the club remains in the Bendigo FNL and would like to do so. Football in the region is at the crossroads and administrators need to do a detailed review and have club support/ engagement. Without that support nothing will change and clubs will disappear.

2024 will not be a season where Maryborough are in the top half of the senior ladder but I am confident we will see more growth and improvement. With that, the club becomes more of an attractive place for recruits as once they arrive they generally like to hang around if they see success on the horizon.

Should be a special thread for the kids. 😊

Guru were you a former Fitzroy player. Your posts in here, provide great insights into the local coaching landscape and club land

I see another one gone from Strath - what happened to Wilson not taking any of his old players with him to Nullawill?

Surely Flaherty wouldn’t be helping Rochy recruit players from Flat? If he is, it’s not a very good reflection on how he enjoyed his time there.

Rare for a coach not to take someone when they move elsewhere.

All coaching seems to be these days is being able to convince guys you know to follow you to clubs.

This has been done for weeks. The player approached Nullawil after the coach was appointed. He was not targeted by the coach.

There’s more to it then just reading an article nd assuming what has gone on

Any knowledge on why Lawrence wanted to leave?

Any knowledge on why Lawrence wanted to leave?

Must have wanted to experience some of that great culture that Daryl is undoubtedly building there.

See that great culture has also landed a superstar player who reportedly commands north of 60k a season.

What’s the salary cap up that way again, $100k?

Must be a spectacular culture to have so many other blokes willing to play for nothing.

Seriously how long is the footy community going to tolerate being pissed on and told by AFL VIC it is raining?
