Bendigo FL discussion 2024

I think he'll be in the top 10 players in the comp forrest, but Fergus Greene played plenty of afl footy last year, and at times I thought really looked the part as a third fwd. He will be heads and shoulders above anyone else in Bendigo footy either on the ball or at centre half fwd.

In summary the BFNL has enough teams. The answers to it's issues involve finding ways to create a more even competition. The focus should be totally on how this can be achieved.

I agree but I do think they need a contingency plan.

Gisborne will leave which makes 8, Maryborough and Castlemaine hanging by a thread. Kangaroo Flat maybe hanging by three stronger threads.

What’s the tipping point for the league? 7? 6?

There are barely 10 A graders in comp this season. Henderson is easily in the top 5

Be interesting to see how your list looks at season end, Trent.

I keep going back to the game at Dower Park last year when I saw him have 39 and kick 7, with double figure clearances and tackles to boot.

I’ve seen a lot of great games from great Castlemaine midfielders but that is up with the very best, if not the best I’ve seen.

Is there a club far enough away to not have any idea what’s been happening in the region cluster * and close enough to not make travel a barrier? If not, they aren’t going to get one.
What if the league was 6 teams?
1. Sandhurst
2. Square
3. South
4. Eaglehawk
5. Stath
6. Flat

3 rounds through the year and would consolidate the best talent into the 6 teams? Would this work?

Bit like the old Benalla and district league

Zero chance. Echuca already dominating GV football. Junior structure produces plenty of good players and the town grows significantly every year. They would be unbeatable in the current BFL. Rochester would then struggle to get players out of the Bendigo comp which they have in the past. As Forest said...is the BFL a major league? IMO it's questionable and I'm not sure it is heading the right way. Echuca V Maryborough would be a slaughter.
Ooohhh....don't let Rochy people hear you saying that they used to get players out of the Bendigo comp ringo !! 🤣🤣. They used to stick to Seymour back in the Daniels days because they recruited a handy bunch from Melbourne and Rochy played the "we're all locals " card.

😇😇😇 Steady on Lion76 we have already discussed this ... when Rochy beat all your Melbourne mercenaries in 2008 all our local Bendigo boys in Schmidt, Bowen, Duscher, O'Brien, Collins, Clint Whitsed were Rochy boys on the inside! Same with Givney from Leichville ... 😝😝

It worked both ways....Eaglehawk has had a couple of Rochy boys recently

Fair call 😉😝....but wasn't Duscher from up near Mildura? ....anyway winners are grinners etc. I need to reacquaint myself with some local footy this year...see hoe many clubs still sell Melbourne Bitter !!!! 😁🍺

Yeah he was originally. Played for Rochy through the Schmidt relationship and the other few I mentioned who played Pioneers and/or Bendigo Bombers with: Rochy boys like Watson, Aitken, Moon, Oliver et.al

Ps. Melbourne Bitter is a fine beer.

In the absence of any proposals, vision on a viable structure of footy in this once proud footballing heartland being put forward by those occupying positions of leadership can we do their work for them? What should the BFL look like in 2-3 years, the surrounding leagues the same timeframe. Or has the horse bolted and no one really cares?

Maybe it’s time some of these clubs who are happy to swim between the flags step up. Keep spending money outside salary cap - club that has no juniors playing off and winning under 18 grand finals a major issue - wonder why Bendigo league is in the predicament - rip the heart out of Bendigo football league clubs with big money - before you ask me to name them - if you know local footy you would be able to name them - money bandied around in ncfl - $600 a week for young kids - $18k salary cap difference between Bendigo and lvfl/hdfl yet I’d suggest only bfl sticking by rules - just over $1k a week if you break it down - divide by 22 players is $50 a week - where is the incentive to play higher standard football if that’s what we are aiming for

End of the day it doesn’t matter what league is the premier league in the region - what it needs to have is an incentive for clubs and players to want to be the best they can - so if heathcote league is the premier league - good luck to them - if they can raise the money and be sustainable long term hats off - just don’t pretend to play by the rules offering big money off the table or not investing in juniors and pat yourself on the back come September

I’d suggest you are not correct, at least in about half the cases and I’ll tell you why.

If you wind the clock back 10 years I know what the top clubs were paying. No speculation, horse’s mouth information provided by people at the clubs that were senior coaches or presidents.

You were talking 170k to as much as 200k during those years. Even clubs at the other end of the ladder were spending 120-150k.

The salary cap started around 2017 from memory so the notion that every club made a 20-40% cut is obviously fanciful.

My sources aren’t as broad now but I have a good idea about the spend of several clubs and I’d be confident that although the levels have come back, most clubs are still over, from around the 150k mark and below.

Having said that your point still stands because those numbers are dwarfed by what is going on elsewhere in the region. Salary cap will never work and was never going to work as everyone bar the morons at AFL VIC knew all along, the answer is to make the points system so robust that you can’t spend the money.
