Square President says the big drawing games like Broadford and Sandhurst might need a switch. šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Obviously wonā€™t be room to park the one car of Sandhurst fans and I can just picture the road train steaming across from Broadford for that marquee match up.

Sort of makes me understand how the Broadford idea got through.
Quiet a few Dragons fans there GF day Forest. You know they day they won everything.

Maryborough FNC announces recess for 2025

The Maryborough Football Netball Club (MFNC) will enter into recess for the 2025 season.

The decision, made after extensive consultation with club members, players, and the community, will allow MFNC to focus on rebuilding its strength, both on and off the field, with a view to returning to the BFNL in 2026.

In recent years, the club has faced significant challenges, including declining player numbers and increased pressure on volunteers. After carefully considering all options, the club committee determined that a temporary hiatus would offer the best chance to reorganize and come back stronger.

"We want to assure our loyal members, supporters, and the wider community that this decision is not the end for Maryborough Football Netball Club" said Maryborough Club President, Scott Quinlan. "By taking a step back in 2025, we can focus on strengthening our foundations, recruiting, and planning a sustainable future for our club. Our goal is to return in 2026 with renewed energy and commitment."

The committee is working closely with the BFNL and community stakeholders to ensure a successful return in 2026. Plans are underway to bolster youth development, increase volunteer engagement, and secure further sponsorship support to stabilize the clubā€™s financial situation.

In the interim, MFNC remains committed to supporting grassroots football and netball. The club will continue its community involvement, including junior development programs, social events, and volunteer opportunities.

Bendigo FNL Chair, Prof. Carol McKinstry added "The BFNL support the decision of the Maryborough FNC to enter into recess for the 2025 season and while we understand this is disappointing news for many within the Maryborough community, the BFNL are committed to supporting the Club where possible to ensure that 2026 will be a successful return for the Maryborough Magpiesā€.

The club will provide further updates over the coming months, including opportunities for the community to stay involved and contribute to the club's revival efforts.

Sad to see the inevitable news re Maryborough, hopefully they can do a Kyneton and use the season to regroup and find a way back. Going to be a much harder task with no teams playing at all though.
Couldn't agree more Forest. It's almost an impossible task to come back now unfortunately. They will need some incredible people behind the scenes to get back up and going - and you'd like to think some AFL assistance.

Not South, not Strath, Not Gisborne, not Giants .........?
I think itā€™s Castlemaine or south. Castlemaine have managed to get 2-4 Maryborough players across. But will make it tough with points. If the league gives exemptions for points for Castlemaine and south, will they do the same for the players going to the top tier teams?

You wouldnā€™t think the points for moving clubs would be as high if the club is in recess. The top teams donā€™t need exemptions they donā€™t use them anyway.

Anyway now we know officially the lay of the land hereā€™s what Iā€™ve heard is happening behind the scenes.

Clubs arenā€™t happy with the prospect of a 14 game season. They need the money the extra games and functions bring in after already copping the Kyneton haircut.
Thereā€™s some push for Broadford to play every other game but seniors next year but if that happens thereā€™s not much room for extra rounds so the clubs donā€™t want it.
Iā€™m expecting money to win out over integrity and extra rounds will be added, creating an imbalanced draw.
The question of how to balance that out to minimise ladder positions being determined by the extra games is the question.
The league wonā€™t want less finals and have already run a final 8 up the flagpole. The rationale being if everyone makes finals an uneven draw doesnā€™t matter. Fortunately thereā€™s zero support for it.
Expect remaining as a final five to be sold a nice compromise, giving the extra team a chance to make it regardless of an imbalanced draw.
All very much up in the air though, thereā€™s going to be some heated debates and late night meetings this off season I think.

As per the article the Maryborough FNC has decided to go into recess in 2025.

It is a disappointing but the right outcome. Despite the efforts of some of the most amazing people I have ever been involved with in my time in football, the decision to do this was a difficult and emotional one.

The club has explored all options and completed a thorough review of its current plight as well as looking at future direction.

I am saddened by the outcome and despite enjoying my involvement with the club, disillusioned with the state of country football and the lack of direction and support by certain bodies. Trying to get a club on board that doesnā€™t even exist when we were in trouble probably sums up where the administration of football in the region is currently at.

I cannot say enough thanks to certain members and clubs within the BFNL and surrounding areas for their patience and efforts to support us this year. They have been unbelievable and the club really appreciates it.

I also want to call out the pariahs from other clubs who couldnā€™t quickly enough try and pillage our footballers and netballers throughout the year. You are pathetic and do your clubs no service or enhance their reputation. I certainly wouldnā€™t be putting out the olive branch if you were in the same position.

I also want to thank our committee, players and supporters and sponsors for their efforts this year. They have been unbelievable and deserve so much kudos for sticking together. The manner that everyone galvanised and worked together to try and keep the club going is like nothing I have ever seen before and I have been around football for a long time.

As for the future, who knows what may happen. Hopefully we can get back and I know we are determined to do so. Where that is who knows but I remain optimistic about the future and football in Maryborough.

I am not sure what I will do now but maybe I will go and watch a bit of football around the traps in 2025 but I certainly am saddened and upset about what has happened to our proud and historic club. The outcome we really wanted was not achieved but it was not due to giving our all.

Thanks everyone for your messages and words of support this year on here. As with any of these portals there are others who were often way off the mark with their information and some of the rubbish on here certainly impacted on many at our club. I hope in future people think about what they type before they push the reply button.

All the best and letā€™s hope the BFNL can come back at some stage along with the Maryborough FNC.

Top 8? You canā€™t be serious. Someone thinking about all the extra $$$ no doubt rather than integrity of competition.

Broadford will be back in recess again in 2026 after getting mauled each week next year.

Broadford will be in recess again in 2025, leadership needs a clean out to give the club the best chance of surviving any sort of transition into the BFNL. The executive have made their intentions clear given that they have not even advertised positions publicly to give 2025 the best chance.
