Bendigo FL discussion 2025

The schedule for the remainder of the AFL community camps for 2025 has been released. The locations show how out of touch the AFL and clubs are with country football. Look at the locations clubs are visiting/ visited.

Having a camp in December when no-one is thinking/ talking footy and having a well earned break...

Forest St End - was there anything in Castlemaine?

No visits to any rural towns as such.... Two visits to Bendigo and a single day in Shepparton.

The system is embarrassing and shows the disconnect with country football.

Anyone who thinks the AFL industry gives a Rats toss about country football is delusional. It became an elite system with Private schoolboys given a leg up. Family ties ensure some arrive in the industry that ensures they are promoted to their level of incompetence. If you have the right last name, are prepared to play the game, and not rock the boat then you are on the way. As stated here, the AFL wants people at home watching games for the TV rights or at the ground where you pay $13.50 for a beer and $12.50 for an egg sandwich. Anybody that challenges is soon a dead man walking.

When Essendon turned up in December I asked who recommended the locations for these camps. I got told the Regional Council sent a suggestion of Maryborough, Broadford (yes yes I know) and some other regional areas I can't remember.

Glad to see the AFL listening to those in the regions.

Absolutely agree ringo, it shows how out of touch the afl are with the grassroots game. Community camps used to run for a week, geelong players caught the train to Swan hill in 2007. There's zero interest in promoting the game, as long as auskick numbers are high, they don't care, and as long as there's enough private school players to make sure there's enough players for 19 clubs, with the help of academy talent and scholarships they don't care.

The appointment of Dillon is to not rock the boat. Lip service treatment to regional Victoria, with the expectation we come in waves to watch a diluted game of Aussie rules, pay memberships, any chance the afl gives back ?

News to me they were there, I did see there was a night for coaches in Bendigo but didn’t realise it was part of a community camp.

We had Essendon come up years ago and we all ran around like blue arse flies to meet their extensive list of requirements and got very little out of it.

I think the Essendon visit included a couple of school visits in Castlemaine for a few hours each, but that might have been the extent of it.

Yes they did visit some schools. They did a Q & A session. No actual kicking a footy. Apparently they weren't allowed to.
One principal (involved in BFL circles) at a tiny school was able to guilt them into a bit of kick to kick.
Later they did run a clinic after school at Wesley Hill that any kids could go to.

Who is it and where he playing no way this is highway robbery! Investigation will no doubt take place from Hierarchy at Hurst and Strath and Square to a lesser extent of late.
Well done and good on the young lad upsetting the apple cart finally.

You’ve conveniently forgotten to say “former” Pioneers player.
With a name like (Nick) Thompson where else could he possibly play?

Is he related to the tribe at Eaglehawk?

Are you sure he is a 'former player' MJ? He would be 18 years old I think.

One of the great mysteries to me is why is it considered desirable to have Pioneer players on your list when they are lining up for the Pioneers?

Exactly... get them for maybe 3 games a year. Or if they're top tier talent lucky to get 1

Same with vfl listed players.

How many pios get drafted? They are then 1 point players

I remember in 1983 finals were played at Eaglehawk and Kangaroo Flat (not involving these clubs). However I cannot recall if the QEO was out of action due to wet weather. Someone may be able to help out on this point.

The idea has some merit and it happens in other major competitions but I would probably limit it to round 1 of the finals as I think a team aiming to get to the grandfinal would want at least one game on the QEO during the finals series. For example, I remember in 1981 Castlemaine had a terrific team and should have won the premiership. They belted Sandhurst at home in the second semi (final four in those days) and went straight through to the grandfinal which they then lost to Sandhurst. I believe not getting finals game experience at the QEO before the grandfinal cost Castlemaine the 1981 flag. However the number of finals has expanded under the final five system and does create more opportunities.

At a practical level I think the only clubs it would impact at the moment are Gisborne and Castlemaine. Clubs like Square and Eaglehawk are itching to get on the QEO and it's senseless to play a final between two Bendigo Clubs away from Bendigo. Playing a round 1 final match involving Castlemaine or Gisborne at a neutral venue such as Maryborough has merit but not sure how catering would work. There must be a way as it is done in other leagues. Otherwise you give it to the team finishing higher on the ladder.

Summary. At a practical level the options are limited.
Happens at every other league in the state albury, you could have for example both Wang teams play a final at Albury or the other way round, no other league actually cares getting in the car. Grand final at the qeo and maybe 1 final, but the rest spread it out

two Wang teams played final at Corowa last year. Probably made sense to toss coin and play it at one of Wang grounds, but o&m stuck to its digs and kept it a “neutral” venue. I think the gv prelim and gf are both at deakin, but rest get shared around.

He wasn’t named in the training squad announced by the Pioneers late last year, so I’ve assumed he’s a former player.
