They were also bendigo bombers coached by matty knights, where they did make their players play bfl, we had lovitt-murray at flat, gilliland at maine, Mark Brown Eaglehawk all play a handful of bfl games

Fox Lancaster what an athlete he was, i think he won the first 2 bnfs on a back flank after kicking a ton in the bfl

Matt tointon first ruck absolute warhorse.

I recall the Bendigo Diggers starting onballers in the early days were Mark Bradley, Brad Eaton, Jim Cail, Nick Carter. Pretty handy VFL lineup.
Cail.and Eaton were playing pios early days of diggers.

98 was their first year, pretty sure Ross Smith was playing coach, my memories they were competitive that year

They finished 2nd last I think. Then last every year until the Bombers.

I remember there being some early buzz and excitement around them that quickly vanished. Always thought they'd have been better off promoting a club, at least then they'd have had the rusted on supporter base.

Traralgon went that way with their own identity, but didn’t last long for memory. Three years tops. Also kept a team in the Gippsland league. North Ballarat was the success story of the country clubs that went into VFL in that era. Won flags. Gerard Fitzgerald as coach.

Didn't Bendigo replace them? Traralgon came in for a couple of years, went back and Bendigo slotted in?

They also kept fielding their local side which logic suggests would split the base. Who wants to travel to Melbourne to see Traralgon when they're still playing just around the corner?

We also had the Murray Kangaroos. Sadly the board at North Ballarat turned on each other and within a year or two of winning a VFL flag they were gone.

They won 4 games and lost another 3 by under a goal and had a percentage of %75, which shows they were competitive.

I'd like to afl vic promote a team in the pios region and get rid of the pioneers. The top 10 kids that aren't on aps school scholarships can play vfl.

Traralgon North Ballarat and the diggers came in at the same time. Ringo you'd have played against the powerful Traralgon sides of the early mid 90s, I think it took a fair while to bounce back.

I agree with getting a club, like north Ballarat did though, to me echuca is the best suited club in the pios region. They have provided so many vfl players, the location is better, people with afl backgrounds pick living in echuca over Bendigo and I think they're more likely to get the best gv and Bendigo kids to try play as well central murray kids.

I'd love to see tac cup go, bring in 3 country vfl clubs to replace it. Lift the draft age after the first round to 19. Push the best 18-24 year olds to play vfl and major league footy. Players will then go back to their home clubs as better footballers and take what they learned to their home club.

Traralgon was 96/97 and gone by 98. Diggers started in 98.

Very good idea would create some interest for sure. You would need to base it in Echuca to attract the better GV Talent and those north in Central Murray / Sunraysia /Mildura with these leagues, especially the GV under 18 pathway, far superior standard to the Bendigo 18's and their junior competition ( although they still get their good deal of talent coming through there).
