Best 22 for 2014

Really excited about next year after reading through this thread.

Reckon were a flag chance if Jamo, hendo and Waite all play 22 (very unlikely). I reckon another gun tall and Watson stepping up would see us become a very dangerous team. Taila instead on Lucas or McLean would be nice.

Mclean is in our best 22.

Lucas' career is at a crossroads. If he isn't regular 22 this year and playing well, I feel he will be off. He was very highly rated as a youth, so the pick is somewhat defensible. Barely though.

I honestly felt that one of our best games of footy for the year (even though we lost) was against Hawthorn. We looked potent with the 3 talls up front. IIRC Casboult had a massive influence around the ground and then would drop forward as the 3rd tall (ala Leigh Brown). Fairly certain Hendo was up there as well. Add a Waite to that and suddenly we have targets. Would love to see this.

I honestly thought Mick would play this structure more frequently as that's what he did at Collingwood with Cloke, Dawes, Brown. Hoping with Watto finding his feet down back that we can pull this off.

6 Backs - 3 who will rotate in midfield (Simpson, Walker, Tuohy)
Tuohy Jamison Mciness
Simpson Watson Walker

6 Mids
Kreuzer (20% forward), Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Thomas, Curnow (tag)

Bench
Mclean, Graham, Docherty | Everitt

6 Forwards - 3 of which will rotate in midfield (Yarran, Menzel, Garlett)
Yarran Henderson Menzel
Garlett Waite Thorp (20% ruck)

Rowe, Cas and Waite all played forward that day (managed 4.3 between them). Rowe was a late replacement for Carrots.
Hendo, from memory, played down back. He most definitely went scoreless.

Is that Mitch Thorpe?? He would be one of the shorter players that has every played ruck. I think he is 193 or 194 or something

Armfield will be in top 22. Played every game last season so must be doing something right. He runs both ways, tackles hard and has pace. Skills not the best but wouldn't be any worse then half the team. I think he would make an ideal small defender. I would play Walker CHB- maybe small but he is quick and the better CHF are mobile, Walker has a good leap and can spoil taller opponents and run off them. My team would be:

Armfield Jamison Everitt
Simpson Walker Tuohy
Thomas Curnow Yarran
Gibbs Henderson Robinson
Garlett Waite Menzel

Kruezer Judd Murphy

Bench: Warnock, Carrazzo, Mclean
Sub: Scotland

Wouldn't mind us picking up a couple of quick forwards. But main priority is a CHF or quick midfielder who can find the footy.

This is nothing personal Feva, I just want to highlight a pet hate of mine.

IMO rucks and KPP do not spend a lot of time on the bench, in most games a very low %. And so when naming teams or a best 22, it is not accurate to name a ruck or KPP on the bench, if they are named in the team. Chances are there will be 4 smalls on the bench for most of the game. Placing all the rucks and KPP on the ground in a best 22 IMO is a more accurate representation of where the players will be spending most of their time. Would this be true?

And so using Feva's team as an example Warnock/Casboult is more likely to spend more time in a FP or swapping with Kreuzer in the ruck, and IMO that would make for a very tall forward line. IMO chances are Thorp would be dropped for another small/flanker/mid. Unless of course Thorp has the aerobic capacity to run around as a mid !!

Just my thoughts and opinion !!

Amers,

Very pedantic, and I totally disagree:
- A ruckman is a midfielder and needs to be part of rotations and rest just as much as the smaller mids do. I agree that some of this rest can be done in the forward line just as the smaller mids do
- All Australian team used to always have a ruckman on the bench before deciding to just pick the one ruckman each year

I'm not sold on the Kreuzer/Warnock combo anyway as neither do enough going forward and Warnock doesn't do enough around the ground. If Levi continues to improve, my preference would be a Kreuzer/Levi combo

yarran jamison mcinnes
everitt watson docherty
simpson gibbs thomas
menzel henderson tuohy
murphy casboult walker
kruezer judd graham
tuohy carrazzo cripps mclean

I am really struggling to pick my best 22... this is a good problem.

For example;

Defensive forward. Armfield, Duigan or Robinson. I don't think any of them have the foot skills to play midfield or back. I love them all but i think we can only play 1.

3rd Tall in defense. Everitt, White, Mcinnes, Bootsma. Again we can probably only play 1 from this group.

Small/ medium forwards. Yarran, Menzel, Gartlett. Probably should only play 2.

Running defenders. I think Simo, Walker and Touhy have Docherty covered, Temay down the pecking order.

Tagger. Curnow or Carazzo, should only play 1.

Midfielders, With Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Thomas and Mclean as our main play makers it does not leave allot of room.

I really think playing Scotland for another year is not a good idea. This is the spot we should be using to give more game time to Graham, Docherty, Cripps and Lucas who could all do with game time,.

It was, umpires absolutely hammered us though. Most frustrating game I can remember watching.

I have to agree with this. There was a stage where they had 10 in a row, but during that stretch they also didn't pay about 3 blatant ones.

I was absolutely furious after that game, but I also think we got hard done by all year (apart from the Adelaide game where we clearly won the frees).

Didn't we like get 1 free kick in the entire second half or something silly like that?

plus their waterboys were for some reason wearing navy blue and we kicked it to them twice.

The ruck depth is only an issue if Mick wants to play both Warnock and Kruze in the same team ;)

Of which I myself cannot still not decide.

Not really - even if there is one in the AFL team and one in the VFL they each need someone to back them up. Casboult might do OK in that role in the AFL, but if his kicking doesn't improve it seriously hampers his value as a forward. Rowe can probably fill in as a back-up ruck in the VFL, but I don't see him or anyone other than Casboult doing it adequately at AFL level. Had we picked up, say Ben Brown rather than Giles then we'd have a viable alternative to the Warnock-and-Kreuzer-in-the-firsts policy even if Casboult doesn't improve. So a Conlon or other forward/ruck option makes sense. Also need to factor in possible injuries (remember Casboult debuted because none of Kreuzer, Warnock or Hampson were available) and the desirability of having a project ruck around given their notoriously long development period.
