Both never really hit the same heights again.

Modra gave a team and a state an identity, pride. That nudges it for me

It’s not too much of a stretch to say No Rehn = No premierships.

That’s how important he was.

I agree with you that Rehn was a more important player for our premierships, but the question in the pole was "who was the better player" , so I based my answer on that question. I think Modra was a better player and exciting to watch, but Rehn had more impact (as in, if he did not play he was hard to replace)

Very hard to pick. Modra a superstar. Rehn the heart and soul. One takes Full Forward in the best ever Crows team, the other takes 1st Ruck. One would take spectacular marks up forward, the other was one of the best marks and judges playing a kick behind play. Both suffered the dreaded ACL. Rehn was able to come back and add something for the Crows after his two. Unfortunately Modra's spelled the end of his career at the Crows.

I don't think we win premierships without Rehn. Sadly, history saw us win one without Modra. My vote goes to Rehn.

No player’s performances have had as much direct influence on the fortunes of the team than Shaun Rehn’s.
1995 – out with a knee injury = Crows terrible
1996 – out with a knee injury = Crows terrible
1997 – played a full season = Crows premiership
1998 – played a full season = Crows premiership
1999 – out with a knee injury = Crows terrible

Rehn made his debut as a 19 year old in 1991. In the last game of that season he picked up 3 Brownlow votes and had 24 disposals, 8 marks and 20 hit outs. He became our first choice ruckman the next season and finished 4th in our B&F. A four game patch in the middle of 1993 saw him pick up 9 Brownlow votes and we won 4 on the trot, storming into finals calculations. In 1994 we started to see the champion emerge. Double figure marks 7 times, 9 games over 20 disposals, 13 Brownlow votes, All Australian and at just 23 years of age won our Best & Fairest.

On the verge of greatness, his 1995 and 1996 seasons were ruined by consecutive ACL tears. It just wasn’t meant to be for poor Robert Shaw! It robbed us of our most influential player and both seasons were dire affairs.

In 1997 he made his return, slowly finding touch. He wasn’t taking any chances this time, playing with the largest knee brace I’ve ever seen. A big, black Robocop-style contraption that impacted on his mobility but would have done wonders for his confidence. His form wasn’t great but he had an impact when it counted, playing key roles after half time in the preliminary final and again in the grand final.

The Crows were 31 points down at half time of that preliminary final and looked gone. The most symbolic moment in our history occurred at the start of the third quarter, with Rehn thrown to Centre Half Forward and Tim Watson announcing, “And Shaun Rehn has decided to take the bandage off his knee.”

It was a statement that we were throwing caution to the wind and going to have a crack. This attitude spread to the team – the fear was gone, we were bold and we ran and ran and ran. Watching a replay of that game, you get goose bumps at that line of commentary as it marks a turning point in our history. Another ‘brave’ 1993-style finals exit was the script but we threw it out the window in that second half. We didn’t know it at the time as we were too realistic to even imagine what was to come, but I remember a sense that something was happening as soon as Rehn removed the bandage. “Not going to die wondering” perhaps captures the feeling best. The rest is history.

In 1998 after two knee reconstructions he picked up 22 Brownlow votes and look at some of his stats:

That is just ridiculous for a ruckman, especially one with two knee reconstructions behind him. Have all the other Crows ruckmen in history combined picked up 22 Brownlow votes between them? He was All Australian again.

He was a genuine No 1 ruckman, a midfielder, got involved at ground level, dropped back in defence taking goal-saving marks, got his knees dirty, was courageous and was our heart and soul. IMO he was the best and most influential ruckman there has been in the AFL. His three knee reconstructions robbed Adelaide of an AFL Hall of Famer.

The third one was during a fricking preseason game when he slipped on that stupid astro turf bounce mat they used to have in the centre square at Football Park. I’ve never been more depressed going into a season. We should have just packed it up then and tried again in 2000.

Like Modra, he finished his career elsewhere and was important in the Hawk’s push to a preliminary final in 2001 in what was a pretty average team. My favourite Crow of all time.

Hmmm, I have blamed the AFL all these years as thought it was their initiative.

Why would the AFL allow the SANFL to have a bounce mat for an AFL game?

My recollection is it was an initiative from the AFL umpiring department to help them bounce the ball higher.

Mods and Rehnny were absolute champs I'll go with Mods because he kicked 129 goals but 70+ regularly in full seasons. Rehnny missed 3 years with his knees a bloody hard choice to make.

the trading of modra and rehn was shocking, john reid was asleep at the wheel, just so bad to let it happen in terms of the fabric of the club. at least they worked out by the time mcleod had his bust up with edwards that these things should be smoothed over instead or you boot edwards, not the club champ. although in saying that I read recently an interview with mcleod and him saying that a deal done to essendon had been arranged by reid, but Bill sanders stepped in at the last minute to convince him to stay, as if it should have ever got to that point. I think sanders was required a second time when mcleod was dumped and ostracised by Fagan too, you couldn't dream it up.

Imo, there is no wrong answer.

We wouldn't have won the 98 grand final without Hart's heroics in the 1st half. Should have won the normy imo.

But Jars was so influential across both 97 & 98 finals series, gives him the edge.

Both top-5 Crows players of all time.
