How's this for a father/son team from the suggestions you've all put forward. Have to include both the father and son not just one or the other...

Full Backs- J. Scarlett, Stephen Silvagni, M. Scarlett
Half Backs- R. Barassi junior, B. Richardson, Sergio Silvagni
Centres- L. Turner, Ben Cousins, M. Turner
Half Fwds- G. Ablett snr, M. Richardson, G. Ablett jnr
Full Fwds- ????, Peter Hudson, Paul Hudson
Rucks- ???? R Barassi senior, Bryan Cousins


I've cheated a little bit, but it's a pretty good team. Think of any ruck father/sons?

Rod & Mark Blake are both 199 cm and genuine Ruckman.

Rod came 3rd in the Brownlow (1981 I think).

Tip - Mark will not come 3rd in the Brownlow ever.

PS My dreamteam of "Ablettallica" contains all the Ablett/Tuck cousins - Gaz, Nath, Luke, Shane and Travis. We won the flag in 05 (pre Travis).

Surely the Ablett/Tuck blood line is the best ever in footy.

Who do you consider the best father/son combinations in footy history?

I'd go:
1) The Silvagnis
2) The Abletts (although Gary and Nathan could still push up to top spot)
3) The Barassis
4) The Whittens

I'm having a bit of a mental blank about what other great father/sons there are. Where would father/sons like the Cousins' and Cornes' fit in?

The Cordnors were definitely better than all these combinations (except for G.Ablett snr).

Anyone putting their teams up here ever heard of a bloke called E.J. Whitten? He also had a son Ted Whitten jr who happened to be a pretty handy footballer who played 144 games and represented Vic before his career was cut short by knee injuries

Leigh Matthews daughters didn't play many games, but why should that rule him out?

I got an idea, how about we nominate the entire Ablett/Tuck dynasty? That means we can have:

Michael Tuck, Gary Ablett, Geoff Ablett, Kevin Ablett, Luke Ablett, Gary Ablett jnr, Nathan Ablett, Shane Tuck and Travis Tuck. That's not bad. 9 players already, 2 champions and 2 stars (so far).

Agree with you Chewy, should stick to father/sons where they were both guns.

Ablett wins on the father's talent alone. Hudson next, for the same reason (although both young blokes show brilliant skills). The Silvagnis are a rare case where the son surpasses the dad. Hopefully Trav Cloke is another one. maybe Richo? Bull was good, but Richo really is a top player, even if he is a silly Tiger dufus.

Isn't there a crop of Daniher boys ripening for the Bombers to reap? Surprising that they managed to reproduce with those heads, but there you go. Thats a family with pigskin in their DNA: I'd bet on one of them being a star.

Finally! Good get Jabso, thats a power of captains, flags and sharp elbows in the one dynasty. Go the Greeks! Put any two of them after the Hudsons.

Pies have a harvest of champion father sons and some lopsided champion father/adequate son combos too. Bob/Rob Rose, Ray/Heath Shaw, Tony/Rhyce Shaw, David/Jason/Cam/Trav Cloke, Des/(forgettable) Tuddenham, I'd say we have at least a first 18 of F/S picks. And the Monkhorsts are coming...

On top of that we have had the most brothers play together in League history.

Apparently some other mob think they're the family cub.

Geelong has another obvious case of the son being superior. Going by what my Dad and others have told me I'm sure John Scarlett was a good footballer, but I doubt very much he was as good as Matthew.
