Best First Game ?

Showing my age here but I remember seeing Ricky Barham (the "racehorse") play his first game against Hawthorn in 1977. He kicked 5 goals from the wing. I was only a young boy then but to this day it is the best first game I have seen from any player. It was a start of a magnificent career too!

Back OT having been reminded of Adrian McAdams fantastic start I've gotta go with him? WTH happened to him after that?
From memory dont think injuries had anything to do with it just tapered off in form, ended up getting picked up by collinwood a cpl years later where he didnt do much.
Remember hearing stories about how he would regularly land the ball in a rubbish bin from 40-50 meters away at training. Best start to a career i have seen looked like he was gonna be special.

Didn't Allen Jakovich kick a bag in his first game too?

Nope. In his first game (rd 1, 1991), his whole team only kicked 2.8 (20).

He was then dropped, kicked 60 goals in the reserves competition over a small number of weeks, and then came back into the seniors to kick another 60 more in the second half of the year.

I was at the Metropolis game, but to me it seemed like a fluke even then. Also, 2 of his first 4 goals were clear examples of him taking a potshot at goal while a better positioned teammate ran by unnoticed.

Must have been on the Benny Cousins wodner drug and thought the ball was a hamburger.
No its because they replaced the big 'M' on the footy with the VW sign. Lost hes urge to run after that. ;)

This was the BigFooty thread about Brennan's debut.

Makes some humorous reading now. Even some West Coast supporters were saying that he will be better than Judd. :D
Just found this little gem :D
You have got to be kidding me. Have ever actually watched Polak play. One thing that Polak has and Fraser doesn't is guts. Mark my words once Polak get a bit of muscle on and if he stays relatively injury free we would be talking a player in Jonathan Brown mould with better skills. Comparing Fraser and Polak in any sense is rather stupid:rolleyes:
:D :D

Played out the season but was very patchy the following year and struggled to make the team consistently. Was traded to Collingwood but pulled the pin before he'd played a game for the club and went home to the NT.

He turned up a couple of years ago playing cricket in a NT representative side against one of the lesser performed touring teams (Bangladesh??). Opened the bowling and took a bag of wickets. True sporting freak!

Greg Williams had about 40 touches in his first game for geelong, Warren Ralph kicked about 12 on debut at waverly vs the kangaroos.

I'd have to say Greg Williams by miles. Remember listening to it and the commentators couldn't believe how accomplished he was. It was Ablett's first game for Geelong also.

Still have John Coleman comfortably at the top. For ever.

i reckon i remember a kid named heath shephard that kicked 5 and almost took mark of the year in his debut for collingwood in late 80s or early 90s. is that correct?

I think Andrew Walkers was pretty good. 26 touches... was hyped so much after that. Jared Brennan had a crazy debut as well. Was in the papers and had multiple tv interviews after his debut.

Two more words: John Coleman. Didn't see it, but 12 goals on debut would be a fair indication he went alright.

Ricky Barham kicked 4 goals and picked up 25 possessions against Hawthorn at Princess Park. It could have been his second or third game though.

My memory is not my strong point.

Scott Cummings kicked 8 or something against Sydney at the 'G'

Thats the best debut I've seen live. He looked about 7 foot tall, and simply couldn't miss. Was it 8.0?

A P Daicos had his debut vs St Kilda in 1979 at Vic Park, only managed 30 touches. Did he go on to do anything else?

Funny thing about that game, I can recall my old Dad beaming with pride about Picken's game at CHB, but I don't think of us really noticed Daics except when he banged an easy shot on goal out on the full.

Has anyone mentioned Whitnall? His (admittedly very impressive) debut made the Brennan buzz more like a whisper. Poor fella simply couldn't luive up to the hype, even though he hasn't been a bad player.
