AND they also smashed the self professed POWERHOUSE of SA School Footy, Sacred Heart, in this years State KO Final.

And to back that up, in 2009, the better players of 2008 will still be in attendance.

I would expect PAC to dominate SA School footy in 2009.

Just an opinion.

Unless there is a national schools carnvial where individual schools compete (best 2 from each state) you are all wasting time...as its all subjective crap.

Other points:
1. St Pat's Ballarat won 49 Premierships in a row, 2 old boys won brownlows, 100+ VFL/AFL players in 116 years, several past players VFL/AFL coaches and several Herald Sun Shield wins as official "Best Victorian School". A couple recently. Many past players at North Ballarat Roosters - VFL Premiers in 2008.

2. Assumption Kilmore have a similar very strong history to SPC.

3. Disappointingly several/most APS schools refuse to compete in the Herald Sun Shield due to some TAC clashes/commitments of some players and the APS Games. But thats the same challenge for all other Vic schools. If they really wanted to play (extra 3-4 games) they could but some 1st Coaches are afraid to put their personal and school reputations on the line - if you don't put it on the line...you can't claim the bragging rights. APS Premiership does not automatically = best school. Therefore, in Victoria only the Herald Shield result matters when discussing the best school. Some of you may not like that but its objective.

4. All sport competitive APS/AGS schools have some scholarships whether publicly known or in most cases hidden (not just Haileybury - even the ones complaining have a few tucked away). Haileybury did overdo it and spoilt the APS footy competition - pitty they did not use the talent they had better in 2004-07 and win the state titles as well as APS. Comes down to coach/teacher interest and motivation I suppose. Mother Theresa could have coached them to APS titles with the talent available - I am sure any serious schoolboy footballer would want a chance to win. APS schools should look beyond their local comp if they really want to brag - play the extra games and prove your status on the field.

5. More one off "friendlies" between the top schools would sort out the best schools order pretty quickly but unless you thought you were a chance to dominant, you are going to shun the scrutiny or risk of injury when all you see worthwhile is the local premiership you play for.

Scholarships strictly forbidden...but still given out. And if things are the same as they were when I went to a PSA school - Wesley were the best at it!
Yes if there were NO SCHOLARSHIPS you would quickly see which schools had the best quality football and development programs (not just 1st XVIII) and best Coaching staff. Just not a reality in the APS/AGS/BAS comps.

KPass, what you seem to miss is that APS schools play on Saturdays. The finals of the Herald shield clash in the last few weeks of the APS season. It is virtually impossible for them to schedule both competitions with the overlap.

Xavier actually registered for the Herald Shield in 2006. They defeated St Pat's Ballarat and Assumption in the pre-liminary rounds, but were unable to go any further because their APS final against Scotch was scheduled on the same date to play against St Joseph's.

It is also worth pointing out that several APS and AGS schools won the Herald Shield during the 80s and 90s. Assumption have won it a few times recently, Xavier once in the late 90s. So your comments aimed at these schools are quite ignorant.

just because they had a few good players doesnt make them the best school in the country... its all about depth.

How so?
They weren't even the best in SA last year.
PAC rolled them in the Knockout Final.

I agree, however, over the last 10 or so years, they have been best in SA.
SHC lead till half time and then u could see them get tired because they played 3 games in a week. But PAC desided to rest 15 players agaist scotch and lost. SHC 2nds beat scotch. Finally SHC beat PAC 2 out of three times during the year.

Going on last year shc whould be juded best footy school in Aus. Purly because they beat assumption and did it comfortable just after assumption had won the hearld sun which ment they where the best from vic

Just so we're aware, Judd was down to go to Xavier (like his father did) before caulfield got him on a scholarship. In light of this, Xavier's team of 2001 would have a midfield of chirs judd, jobe watson, luke ball and cam hunter on a wing/flank. Doesn't matter though, still won the premiership as one of 4 in a row.

He would have stayed at my school, St. Leonards, if we actually gave a shit about sport...and gave out scholarships.

are we comparing these schools by the best list this year, past players or the best footy culture?

plus if its on past players cauflield grammar has one word for you: Judd
