The 2013 Prem against Geelong would go down as the best game I have been too. I was seated surrounded by arrogant cats supporters who gave it to me all night. When we Sheils cleared its from the Geelong half back line I was on a different planet I was BEAMING with joy. This game was made all the sweeter because I had been to the Bartel point, Porkins goal after the siren, Roughie archilies, QF loss and every other loss other than one where I was interstate.

Mind you I really enjoyed Round 6 at Princess Park in 1989 when we came from a mile behind at half time behind to win by 8.

Another awesome game was the Merger game against the Demons, Dunstall kicked a 100 and the last 5 minutes the ball wouldn't come out of the Demons forward line, all they needed was to score a goal to deprive us of making the finals, they didn't we won and made the finals.

  • 2001 Semi Final vs Port Adelaide
  • 2007 Round 13 vs Collingwood
  • 2007 Elimination Final vs Adelaide
  • 2008 Qualifying Final vs Western Bulldogs
  • 2008 Preliminary Final vs St Kilda
  • 2013 Preliminary Final vs Geelong
  • 2014 Grand Final vs Sydney

Way back as a little kid I went to a game in 1987 with my Dad at waverly ( VFL PARK) where the Hawks won by a point
I remember Chris Mew taking about a billion marks in the last Quarter opposed to Stephen Kernahan
Still to this day the best individual performance I have EVER seen

I am handicapped from having only lived here for just on 4 years now (got here the day before the 2011 prelim) so my limited list would be:

  • 2012 Round 1 vs Collingwood - My first ever Hawks game at the MCG. High scoring, high quality match where we got revenge for the 2011 prelim. Took my cousin with me who was from Scotland and he was cheering louder than me towards the end - converted him to a Hawks fan.
  • 2012 Preliminary Final - We didn't play anywhere near our best - but to hang on like we did was great to see. Cyril in the fourth quarter was just sensational.
  • 2013 Grand Final - My first grand final win witnessed at the MCG itself. The game itself wasn't a spectacle - but the day was for me.
  • 2014 Round Round 3 vs Fremantle - Watching the flag unfurl and then watching us absolutely scorch the Dockers in one of the best halves of footy I have ever seen. Topped off by *that* length of the field team goal with the Cyril finish (cue horrid Bruce groaning).
  • 2014 Round 22 vs Geelong - I will never forget the roar when Langford kicked that goal at the end of the 3rd. The loudest game I have been to that wasn't a final. It was amazing.
  • 2014 Grand Final - No description needed.

There are too many to remember. However, when you have been going to a football ground for nearly 15 years, and sometimes your team only kicks 2 or 3 goals, in a full game, and for every fellow supporter, there are 100+ feral, ugly, toothless, shouting supporters degrading you, and your club as they breath their stinking breath on you, you tend to remember the first win at that ground.

In the dying minutes, Ian Mort, whom I went to school with, kicked to John Peck, who marked about 30 yards out. The siren sounded, with our deficit only 5 points. Peck was one of the best exponents of the torp I have ever seen, and this kick was no exception. We won by one point.

Other memorable historic games were in 1951 we beat St Kilda after a win less 1950; I will never forget the excitement. Of course, our first final win, against the baggers, and sitting in the Great Southern Stand, with hail tearing holes in my plastic rain coat, was special. 1961 Grand Final will also never be forgotten.

There have been too many to call, but these will stick in my memory until I go.

In chronological order

1. Dunstall's last game vs Sydney. Packed stadium and monster cheers for his two goals. Pumped them too.
2. Last game at Waverley. The riot after the game was incredible. Still have some of the banner from that day.
3. Dixon kicking a goal after the siren to sink Carlton. Can't remember when.
4. 2007 EF
5. Buddy's 100 vs Carlton. What a party on the ground.
6. 2008 grand final. While quietly confident I never expected a win like I sort of do these days. Pure joy to watch
7. Buddy's two goals of the year vs Essendon. Ran right past the Hawks members. Inspired the team to win.
8. 2013 prelim. Carthartic, more emotion than I've ever seen from a hawks crowd.
9. 2014 grand final. Pure karma

2008 granny everybody was on fire it was Crawfs last game, Mitch was captain the sun was shining the sky was so blue... It was hot too.. We served it up to the handbaggers they never got over it, the rest is history... My first live grand final I waited 17 years to attend one cost me a bomb went by myself ... Have never regretted it.. Was mid thirty something living it up, the best weekend ever!!!it was a crazy day has stayed with me forever, some days I think of it when life gets me down... 14 was good too but 08 beats it...I think coz we beat the handbaggers and nobody gave us a chance! GO HAWKS!!

Hands down, Hawthorn vs Geelong Round 6 1989, May 6th.

Handbaggers kicked 108 points in the first half and led by 49. We came back to win 171 - 163.

(Not counting the GFs I've attended. Those were special for their significance rather than the quality of the games themselves)

So many great memories.

Hawks v Essendon in 1987 my first match, beat the Bombers at Princes Park

2008 my first GF, beating Geelong (we played an extraordinary finals series too)

Merger match v Melbourne (we won, Dunstall's 100th, Langer's guernsey)

Dunstall kicking 17? at Waverley

Dunstall's last game

Last Waverley game

Crawf's 300th in Launceston

Hawks comeback v Saints at Waverley

Buddy kicking 14? to defeat North in Launy

2014 GF v Colas

2013 prelim Hawks v Cats

2013 GF v Dockers

They are the ones that stand out fresh in my mind atleast

1984 2nd Semi Final Hawthorn vs Essendon
Skills, hardness, free flowing and two teams that just hated each other.
The old southern stand shook that day.

Also my 1st ever game 1975 vs Richmond at VFL park, I was a neutral that day, the lead changed 3 or 4 times during the game and so did I (I was only 6 at the time) anyway the Hawks won and I have been on board ever since, oh how things could have been so different.

The first final outside of VIC.

I still don't know how I got out alive.

I went over for this game with the regulars that I used to go to the footy with all the time...unbelievable weekend and to top it off we all cleaned up at Burswood on the Friday and Saturday nights before the game and were seated near the players on the flight home. Still talk about that weekend to this very day.

I also wonder how we got out alive but I think the crowd were simply too stunned to think about fixing us up after the game.

  • 2007 elimination vs Adelaide - First ever final, and what an introduction to September football. Never forget that day.
  • 2013 Prelim vs geelong - Was torture for most of the game, had all but given up at 3 quarter time. The last 20 or so seconds were the greatest moments of my football life though, when we got out the back i knew we had won, and so did about 45000 others. Every hawks supporter was out of their seat, it was surreal.
  • 2013 GF vs Fremantle - such relief after the previous years heart break.
  • 2014 GF vs Sydney - was incredible. the 10 minute period at the start of the second quarter was unreal, the only thing that comes close to the 2013 prelim (Maybe Dews 5 minutes, but i wasn't there for that, just watched on tv)
Also, and don't kill me but -
  • 2012 round 19 vs Geelong - I know we lost, but this is the best game i have ever seen, live or other wise. It had everything, a 50 point comeback, it was high scoring and had a kick after the siren. It was unbelievable and I'm glad i was there to see it.

I don't think anything will top the 2013 Prelim. I went to every game of the curse and every one gutted me.

2014 GF was great but more that I stopped stressing half way through the second and just enjoyed the game.
2013 GF was just relief.

The Buddy v Essendon game was great coming in that average spell in 2009 and 2010 as well.

I didn't live in Melbourne before 2010 (been a member since 1988) so I don't have live memories of many others unfortunately.

1. 2008 GF - a win against the odds against an all time great team. One for Crawf. 27 degrees. Perfect.

2. 2007 Elim final v Adelaide - Buddy! First finals game and win for a long time.

3. 1996 merger game - Dunstall 100 goals. Langas holding the jumper up.

4. 2001 Prelim v Ess - Very nearly made a GF against a champion team. Croady hitting the post!

5. 2013 GF / 2014 GF - Premierships are hard to beat.

Probably the 2013 PF, but two of my favourites are a bit random:

One is when we beat Collingwood final round of what must have been 2010 - the indigenous kids were killing them and the Pies fans were very angry. We were going off like drunken chimpanzees behind the goal. I think Carl Peterson or whatever his name was sealed it with a lovely dummy and goal. It was just great fun.

Another was a game vs North at the G, would have to get on footywire to remember exactly when, maybe early 2000s. We were just emerging from a period of getting routinely belted by them, and the boys went 6 straight goals in front by about the 5 minute mark. I was there with the same pair of friends... pandemonium in the stands!

Best games for me are more about the company and atmosphere than the significance of the game as such.
