Best Medium Pace Bowler Of All Time?

Always found it confusing medium fast is slower than fast medium. To me it sounds like medium fast is in the middle range of fast, and fast medium the upper range of medium, so would be opposite I my mind.
I think they are used interchangeably. You are right about the convention of having the describing adjective before the noun- so fast is a kind of medium. But then again it’s a specific nomenclature, a world of its own.

I asked ChatGPT this,

In cricket parlance, is a bowler described as medium-fast, faster than a bowler described as fast-medium?

ChatGPT says,
In cricket parlance, a bowler described as medium-fast is generally considered to bowl at a slightly faster pace than a bowler described as fast-medium.

- Medium-fast bowlers typically bowl at speeds between 130-145 km/h (80-90 mph), which is faster than fast-medium bowlers, who usually bowl in the range of 120-130 km/h (75-80 mph).

So, medium-fast would be considered the faster of the two terms.

ChatGPT is the most unreliable tool in the world and I wonder why people use it.

not knocking you, SG34, but this answer is bullcrap to me.

No worries. ChatGPT is fun.
But what IS the truth of the matter.
Perhaps there is no truth as such.

This says the opposite of what ChatGPt says, https://crickomaniablog.wordpress.c...ide-to-different-types-of-bowling-in-cricket/
But I disagree with the examples of bowlers they use for their categories.

Anyway, key point, it puts fast-medium as above medium-fast. 131-141 Moreover, it says the majority of pace bowlers are in this category.

I think it is interesting how the language has evolved and come to mean different things to different people.
I don’t know if there are any such facts out there to be honest.

I don’t think they even used these terms before the 1970s? No idea.

I have even heard of slow-medium and I think it was used to describe Kiwi batters who bowled a bit of medium.

I wonder what Keith Grieg was? Or Doug Walters?

Well, to me the ChatGPt answer makes perfect sense to me, although it doesn’t align with the way I’ve heard it used in Australia sometimes.

Just for closure ..?. I asked Chat a second time, and it gave me a different answer , I then forced it to have a conversation between two dudes at a bar about it. I will spare your eyes from it, but here was its conclusion …

In cricket terminology, fast-medium is generally considered faster than medium-fast. This is based on the order of emphasis in the terms: "fast-medium" puts more weight on "fast," indicating a bowler who operates closer to the fast-bowling threshold but with the control of a medium pacer. Conversely, "medium-fast" suggests a bowler whose primary mode is medium pace but who occasionally pushes toward faster speeds.

### Supporting Evidence:
1. Speed Ranges:
- Fast-medium bowlers typically bowl in the range of 135-145 km/h (e.g., Pat Cummins, Jasprit Bumrah).
- Medium-fast bowlers generally bowl in the range of 125-135 km/h (e.g., James Anderson, Vernon Philander).

2. Examples of Fast-Medium:
- Jofra Archer: Regularly bowls 140+ km/h, touching 150 km/h, but adjusts for control and variations.
- Pat Cummins: Operates around 140-145 km/h with occasional dips for cutters or swing.

3. Examples of Medium-Fast:
- James Anderson: Typically bowls in the 130-135 km/h range, with a focus on swing and seam.
- Bhuvneshwar Kumar: Similar range, relying on skill rather than outright pace.

### Conclusion:
The cricket community, commentators, and analysts generally use fast-medium to describe bowlers closer to the "fast" category and medium-fast to describe bowlers closer to "medium." While there might be subjective interpretations, the consensus aligns with the idea that fast-medium is faster than medium-fast.

Good examples of the limitations of AI here imo, it all makes sense but at the same time that's never seen a game through human eyes.

My understanding was

Fast - always 140kph and over
Fast medium - 130 to 140kph
Medium fast - 120 to 130
Medium - 100 to 120 assuming no spin action

Based off perusing cricinfo and the way they classify bowlers.

My understanding is chat gpt functions by predicting what the most likely wording is in a sequence, so it is likely to have a dodgy output considering the wording is extremely similar for all these terms, meaning statistically all "answers" are equally valid (based on how chat gpt calculates its responses).

Re; terminology usage, I think the terms were used less frequently pre speed guns since there was no real way to accurately determine if a bowler was consistently in a pace range to that level of specificity, and I believe bowlers were a lot more inconsistent in their pace pre professionalism as opposed to modern pace bowlers who will generally always be operating at a target pace barring injury.
