Brisbane by a mile.

Voss is arguably the best player in the comp when fit and still pretty handy when not fit. Aka is as dynamic and dangerous as any midfielder there is. Black is Mr.Smooth. These are close to the best 3 individual midfielders plus they team well together. Then you can add Lappin, Power and Heart who is a Norm Smith winner. Brisbane's rucks are not in the Gardiner/Primus league, although Primus is a qualified top rated because he has to come back and continue his form of what amounts to 3 years ago now. Brisbane's rucks are very effective though and they play to their midfield by continually giving them ball winning possibilities.

Forget how many option clubs have these guys are the guys that have won 3 flags for Brisbane. The rest you could rate as solid in the 3 GF's with a few stand out moments here and there. Of course it helps have high competency in the 22 that play but these are the guys that actually won premierships for the club.

West Coast are probably next but their top end is a but thin and Port have great competency throughout their midfield but losing Stevens has knocked them back a notch. They have a few young guys that will be good though. St. Kilda are the up and comers but their ruck is average at best. They have good midfielders though but they still haven't peaked.

Collingwood's a midfield excluding the ruck is very good. It has basically carried the side for 2 years and no better evidence is needed than removing Buckley and Burns to see how much impact they have. That has also proven the lack of depth at the top end in Collingwood's midfield. Buckley, Burns, Licuria, Johnson, Lockyer, Woewodin, Holland, McGough, O’Bree and a few younger players make a good group of mixed types but pace is the element lacking. The guys coming through lack pace as well so that is a flaw that needs to be addressed.

A couple of other clubs like Melbourne and Geelong may make claims but in reality their records suggest they have a hell of a lot to prove yet. The Dogs should have a good midfield on paper and should have last year. Last year they could have had Brown, Johnson, Smith, West, Murphy and a few good younger players to go with Darcy who is the best ruck rove rucking there is perhaps bar Goodes but he has a few years of performance on Goodes.

I think most people are missing an obvious gun on ball division...the Saints. Clearly on top of the ladder to date and doesn't look like they'll drop off. Hard at the ball and as skillful as any team going around. The only thing they are missing is a gun ruckman but their on-ballers are so good that they are hardly disadvantaged.

The Freo on ball division is good but I don't rate Sandilands all that high. Certainly gets his hand to the ball heaps of times but does little around the ground when it comes to marks. Tap outs aside, I don't think he has much more. On ballers are guns though. Port (if they had Primus, Francou, Carr etc... fit) would be as good as any going around. Oh, and then there's also Brisbane. I rate them almost the equal of the Saints and if Voss was fit along with their ruck men, I believe they would be as good if not better. West Coast with Gardiner is also rated highly.

Tigers on ball division :(

I'd say

Charman, Voss, Black, Akermanis and lappin on a wing.

Changing with Keating, B.Scott, Black* and Power.

*Black doesnt change off the ball, sometimes to a wing or half forward but rarely.

thats prob the best, also another comment for the freo supporters i dont rate headland since he left brissie, was a great player here coz of the ball he received running forward and doesnt have the same confidence or percentage rate of getting it when he does. Has to start getting his own ball soon, good skills though.

fully fit ATM, Brisbane no.1 st kilda no.2

Brisbane
Keating/Charmen/Mcdonald
lappin
voss

St Kilda

harvey
thomson
black
powell
ball
hayes
clarke
baker
Goddard

NDS

can't really see any side beating those two team regularly (they'll both be knocked off from time to time, but will win most games).

harvey has this season and maybe one other, thompson is in good enough form to go around next year, and some of the saints kids will get picked off

Freo are good and have depth, and Collingwood have a pretty good top 4 if they can get them out on the field inc, buckley, fraser, burns, licuria.

but yeah, st kilda and brisbane are the form sides and the gummies have the 3 premierships so that answers who has been the best midfield!

west coast. amazing combination of height, speed, endurance and HARD ball winning ability. in midfield last week 3 players no more than 1 cm off 6"3'.

combined with the best ruckman in the league, who actually plays like a ruckman not a light tower or a rover.

you've got to be kidding...you surely couldn't be putting up west coast as the best on ball division in the afl. you are bordering on leonmagic or yze_magic obsession if you truly believe it. no doubt they have a gun midfield and with gardiner fit and firing, it would be one of the best. your top 4 on ballers would probably be the equal of others. however, teams such as st kilda and the lions have greater depth than just 4...they go down to 6 & 7.

Why not? I haven't seen the stats, but I'd guess the Saints would be in the top couple for centre bounce and around the ground clearances. Why do you need a dominant ruckman if you're clearing the ball anyway?

So how exectly did Collingwood make 2 GF's without ever winning the ruck? Don;t answer, I'll tell you. Their midfield was good enough to win more clearances than their opponents in spite of never winning in the ruck almost every game they played.

west coast have cousins, judd, kerr, embley and fletcher and some very good young midfielders coming through like selwood and butler.
the rest of the team isnt up to the standard of the midfield. if they were we would be able to win alot more games than we are.

midrange ruckman? knobel is 9th on the list for hitouts, thats about as mid range as you can get.

and for back up we have blake and kosi. Blake is doing such a good job, that I think lethal brought in brennan to negate blake from memory, before he got injured.

I think our midfield is the match of any midfield at the moment. I wonder at the loss of harvey long term though, he is such an inspirational player.

i think a high quality ruckman can influence a game ALOT more tha any midfielder. guys like; everitt, gardiner, primus, goodes are pivotal to their sides chances. midfielders are hyped because of how many possesions they get, what we really need is to know how many clearances, hardball gets and centre breaks these midfields get to actually get a gauge on how good they are.
