Best Talent From 2007 Draft?

Yep, let's wait and see how Cotchin goes. I'm obviously thrilled with how Rioli is playing, but in fairness to others he's playing as a crumbing forward in a successful side, not trying to carry a midfield like Palmer is, or play ruck.

As for attitude, my understanding is that Rioli made it pretty clear to all the interstate clubs that he didn't want to leave Melbourne.

Only problem with you saying that is that the guy was right.

Rhys Palmer was eligible for the 2006 draft, and technically could have been drafted. Unfortunately, he was essentially a spud that few had heard of and almost no one would have thought about drafting in 2006.

He turned it around in a big way in 2007 though.

From all reports you are on the money there. Really worked hard on his game in 2007 and is now reaping the rewards. Not the most naturally talented but knows how to put his shoulder to the grindstone.

The interesting thing about watching these drafts is to see who can translate natural skills playing in teenage football, to making it in the big league. Natural skills will only get you so far, work ethic gets you further.

At this early stage, I am fairly confident Carlton got the no. 1 pick right. Rioli is a star, but I think Kruezer will be the more influential player when they are both fully developed.

At the time of the draft I wanted Cotchin and was a bit wary of getting a ruckman with the first pick. But watching this guy it is clear he is a FREAK and is going to be something special in a few years.

All in all it is shaping up as a great draft. Lots of clubs can be very happy with their pics from 2007:thumbsu:

I cant see how Cotchin is in the mix as he hasnt played a game yet. Im sure he will be damn good but I want to see him at AFL level.

For mine the absolute standout has been Rioli, really added to an already impressive forward line.

Others who look the goods are (in no order): Morton, Kruezer, Palmer, Ebert and Masten.

I also reckon Darcy Daniher will have a big impression when he comes in.

Rioli & Ebert for mine so far

Special talents

Only one that has dissapointed so far is Palmer, footskills haven't improved at all since last year (my biggest worry) but at least the high energy style and attitude have remained.

hahaha open the other eye. He has a few things to work on, but tell me which 1st year player doesn't. Almost the dumbest thing I have read on Bigfooty. Tell me which other first year player has had a player of the quality of Ling moved on to them. Dissapointing hahaha

Best talent at this very very early stage would have to be all of the first rounders. Anyone who suggests a player hasn't performed after only 6 rounds has lost all of my respect.

At the risk of the thread becoming 'Who was your club's highest pick in the 2007 draft?', Taylor anyone?

Harry at the moment would be up there as is holding down a KP etc. But over his career I dont think he has the room for improvement the youngsters have in order to become a star player. I think he could be as good as Harley or Milburn but is never going to be another Scarlett (I would like to be proven wrong of course)

Wow, all the talent mentioned here!

Some exciting times ahead for all the clubs concerned. At the risk of sounding like a vintage freak, 2007 could end up matching the 2001 draft which I consider to be the benchmark (and did even back then).

What is impressive is how easily these guys have slotted in to their clubs and look set for the season.

Haven't seen Cotchin, but based on the rest, you would have to expect something special.

I love Rioli, but just like a mate of mine says, "I could kick a few goals playing at Hawthorn as well". With the delivery he gets, the people who he gets to crumb the ball off. It's no wonder he is doing well.

Best natural talent is Morton, just needs some weight as he looks like a pre teen girl. However his actual skills, his talent is amazing.

Others who deserve a mention are Kruezer, Stokes, Wonaeamirri and Palmer. I also rate Taylor... he is good, however it's not talent so much as a good team and great work ethic.

Sadly, none of my Swans fit here..... YET!!!

For those mentioning Cotchin this year...

You must have been looking closely!

He had a broken ankle at the draft, missed the pre-season and so far has played 2 half-games, 1 for coburg reserves, 1 for coburg.

Reports are he's done very well in them, even getting listed among the best ( not bad for half a game ), but he's still a long way off playing AFL.

As for the OP. Top picks aren't necessarily the most talented, they're the most likely to succeed...Teams at the bottom would usually rather a 'sure thing' good 200-game player than toss a coin on the 'might be great, might be nothing' types that tend to follow them.

Actually it's because I saw him play about 10 times last year. This thread originated from a recruiting standpoint and I can tell you from the junior football that I watched last year that I think Cotchin is the most talented.

FWIW, he played a full game for Coburg Seniors when he was named in the bests. Not the half game that you said. ;)

Only going by reports, but I heard he spent a lot of the time on the bench.

If he's playing full games, even better!

I watched our first pick David Myers run around for Bendigo on the weekend and let me say I was FAR from impressed. Had about 10 touches almost all of them were ineffective. Please don't be the next Bolton :(

Any Perth people out there seen the kid play??

Yep. Saw the last half of the Sandy-Bendigo Bombers game and from limited opportunities, Darcy did very well. Can't really judge on that performance, but he did do some nice things.

Rioli is special. :)

Obviously a tad bias but i reckon Rioli is something special.

Young Ebert goes quite nicely from what i have seen.

Gotta admitt you've got a point there. Palmer is really exciting and will be a great leader as well.

I watched West Adelaide play against Norwood a couple of weeks ago. Patrick Dangerfield was on holidays and played and he looked extremely promising. Great hands, great size and runs in straight lines! Would be on a wing or back flank for the Crows if he wasn't still at school!

It will be worth the wait for Crows fans!
