Let's be realistic here. Imagine if the Government banned music, features/free games and graphics in more than eight colours on a poker machine.

Do you reckon that would prevent more problem gambling, less problem gambling or about the same than the proposals for online bookmakers?
Absolutely it would.

It's a fact that the lights and music attract more people to poker machines. Just like the bright lights of Vegas attract customers.

That's my point. Poker machine losses in Australia are more than twenty times larger than those of online sports betting. This despite WA not actually having any poker machines outside of a casino setting.

Apparently though we need to ban promos and bonus bets to help prevent people falling prey to the predatory corporate bookies.(!!!)

Yet nobody has suggested or is likely to suggest getting rid of features/free games and other enticements to help prevent people falling prey to poker machines. Despite, as stated, the fact people lose twenty times more money through the pokes than sports betting.

It's typical Australia in a sense. Allow me to explain. I'm a bourbon man myself, once upon a time I used to grab a sixer of Turkey tinnies on my way home after a long day. Then the "alcopop" tax came along and made that little pleasure absurdly - like seventy percent - more expensive. So I went back to buying bottles of Turkey and making up my own.
The alcopop tax was analogous to this situation. It was an attempt to be seen to be doing something; it ruined an entire market segment whilst doing nothing to reduce overall demand; it was an issue the government perceived it could quickly score points on at no risk to itself.

Right now they're doing the same thing to vaping. And tomorrow they'll destroy sports betting for a large portion of recreational punters.

One of the best promos of yesterday was Double Fixed Odds w Betstar

And the year Pinker Pinker won the Cox Plate, Luxbet had the greatest promo I've ever witnessed.

$200 max bet at Double Fixed Odds and if your horse doesn't win, you get your entire stake back. I had Jimmy Choux which ran second (odds of $12) and I had my mate's father tell me, "Oh, well. At least you didn't lose any money."

I made $3400 last year from arbing, and promos are so much worse than they used to be, so I can definitely believe it
Could you give some tips on how you do it, I can never seem to get the numbers to work to make a profit, I always need to make a multi or use a promo to get the odds up that little bit more

You need to be willing to potentially lose a few dollars to get a potential profit (bonus bet). Looking for guaranteed profits on arbing a bet is a waste of time given how rare, complicated and financially lacking they can be imo.

A good way to get started is to look at 2nd/3rd BB refund races.

1. Find a horse in an eligible race and back it for the max BB refund (usually $50) at whichever bookmaker.

2. Go on betfair and lay it, ensuring that the potential return is similar to your bet's from step 1. At this stage your potential return should be about $5 less than your outlay (this can vary greatly due to odds at both the bookmaker and betfair but as you get used to it you'll be able to minimise it).

3. Hope the horse you backed comes 2nd or 3rd. That way you get betfair paying you out fully and a Bonus Bet from the bookmaker.

The profits are decent without being phenomenal but there are so many bookmakers offering this promo on Saturdays these days that if you've got the capital and a bit of time, you can get on a lot of horses and make a nice bit of coin. Spread your bets around different bookies though to help avoid the banhammer for as long as possible. Smaller fields are better as well, but can also result in losing the 3rd place part of the offer. Check the T&C's.

There's a very good argument for ignoring steps 2 and 3 in this and just backing the horse but if you don't want to risk much then this is an option and one that I used for a long time when I started betting and made good money on.

You can apply similar logic to the AFL and NRL and their promos, although you can use two bookmakers and ignore betfair.

Unfortunately the days of the awesome Sports promos are gone. Was very easy to make over a grand a week just on the NRL and AFL with early payouts for being 24/12 up. There's still opportunity there but it's just greatly reduced atm.

As someone who's done this for a while my advice is to generally stay away from enhanced multi offers. They're starting from so far back margin wise that it has to be phenomenal to look at imo and even then I've never been convinced that they represent better value than H2H or 2nd/3rd back offers (although I've never been bothered doing the maths).

You'll eventually get promo banned almost everywhere but you can greatly delay that date by spreading your promo bets around and putting dummy bets on non promo markets (good way to arb a promo at another bookie).

I'm a poor uni student struggling to pay my rent so cashflow bit of an issue for me atm but whats the most I could expect to lose in a day doing this as a novice.

Like swings of 1k each way on a saturday kind of thing or more?

I understand its easy money long term, im just a poor coward

If you have the money to lay back on betfair you shouldn’t be losing more than $100 a Saturday

Yeah I'd say $100 would be the outer loss wise and if you have a good day you'd be looking at multiples of that of profit.

I was a poor uni student as well when I started doing it and I just began with 1 or 2 races each Saturday. Imo do that for a few weeks, see how you like the risk v reward and expand from there if you're comfortable with it. You'll feel much more confident with a bit of experience then diving in for a full card or two straight away.

And get your head around betfair lays. They can be confusing at first but there's tutorials on their website which explain it pretty well.

For those (unlike myself) that aren't banned from promos and are small bettors (looking at you uni kid)!

MintBet are offering $4 odds ($25 max bet) on anyone but Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon. RealBookie are offering a matched $50 bonus for any outright winning bet.

$25 on anyone but Novak winning on MintBet at $4 = $100 if it comes off.

$50 on Novak winning on RealBookie at $1.65 = $82.50 if it comes off.

That’s only either a $7.50 or $25 profit depending on the result, but then you’ve got the $50 bonus which is obviously easy to turn into a bigger profit.

who can spot the issue?

Wow... that has to be the most shameless lack of odds i've ever seen. They're so low, look at them compared to the TOTE on the right let alone other bookies. For comparison, the favorite at the top there is $3.9 on ladbrokes with no boost.. Shameless.
