You're half right. He won't go to jail because he was the betting manager, not the corporate director. Some people don't seem to understand the difference.

It's easy to sling emotional epithets at him because he was the face of the business, as opposed to the real figures responsible who most people wouldn't recognise from a bar of soap.

Tempers are flying, understandably, because a lot of people have lost a lot of money through no fault of their own, but you need to get your facts straight - misdirected claims of culpability aren't going to get anything back.

Wrong. Daffy can still be a "director" regardless whether he was actually appointed as a director: s9.

A court will consider whether he acted as a director. My information suggests that he probably was.

I have invested a decent amount of funds at SA. Obviously these funds now look extremely lost.
I also having many funds invested with many other bookmakers and early this week got extremely nervous as you can understand.
Now the worrying point is after a week of waiting I am still waiting on 2 more australian bookmakers to pay me out. I am hoping this is just a delay as I can't afford to lose 3 times my balance.
The whole Australian bookmaker safety in my opinion is very shaky at present.
The ACT is so unreliable I have made sure not to have any funds with any of their bookmakers ever again.
With the 2 sums I am waiting for which is a 5 figure sum I am hoping that I can't be struck with lightning twice.
Until the Governments start talking I think I will mass withdrawl my funds and start to earn interest in bank accounts as they are safe.
This industry is fast turning into a disgrace and who knows who is reliable and who is not.
All I know is this is a warning to all punters. whether you are infected by SA or not you can't complaign if another goes down and you have mass funds with them. Withdraw to your minimum now or risk playing in a market where the government shows no remorse if you lose the lot without ever having a bet.
We are fast turning into the next 3rd world country were we cant even trust safe funds in gambling accounts.

Dear Members
You may have heard of the recent collapse of ACT licenced bookmaker, Sports Alive. I would like to let our members know that Sports Alive were licenced in a different jurisdiction and were not subject to the same rigid requirements as Betstar. As a Betstar member, your money is required to be placed on deposit (along with the value of all pending bets) in a nominated bank account and we are required to submit proof of this fact to the Northern Territory regulator on a monthly basis as part of our licencing conditions.
I take pride in our flawless reputation and the security that comes from the Eskander name being part of the bookmaking industry for the last 25 years. I would like to reassure all our members that your accounts are 100 per cent secure and we hope you continue to enjoy the Betstar service.
If you have any queries or concerns please feel free to contact our Membership services Team.

Happy Punting

See bold.

Pretty much saying that the ACT Gambling Commission is useless.

Happy for ya!

Others - where's the value in making something like this up?

You must be new to the interwebs not just Big Footy ;)

The whole infanet is full of people making shit up, hell I might have just made that up.

They borrowed the $250k for the bond? Unbelievable.

So I'm guessing that means not even the $250k will be there for you poor bastards with money outstanding.

The 250k will be there. That is held by the government.

It just means that they potentially use punter funds to gain security from a bank for it (which sort of defeats the purpose for having a guarantee for punters in the first place).

Has everyone now seen the Notice of Meeting posted on the liquidator's site? Tuesday 13th September (10.30am) at Seasons Botanic Gardens Melbourne - 348 St. Kilda Road. I dare say you'll be able to hear a pin drop during the director's statement as to the circumstances leading up to the collapse.

This is an interesting one. First of all the game was a friendly and it sounds as though the bet was placed over the internet. It mentions that it is the Australian CB so surely this guy must have been OS at the time????

2ndly I didn't know cb had friendlies on for live betting.

If they have suspended the market all pending bets should have been suspended too. I've never seen any bet take 50+ seconds to be accepted (exc. Friday fill ups :))

staggering that CB would claim nothing dodgy was done there. The player should take this up with IBAS and will win.

Still not a single response to my numerous e-mails, from the liquidator.

I have serious concerns about the independence of the liquidator notwithstanding the circular to creditors.

There are 4 key concerns:
1. Liquidator consulted prior to winding up by the only director
2. Calling all punters unsecured creditors (no mention of segregated accounts)
3. No mention of insolvent trading/fraud
4. Calling all pending bets refunds as opposed to waiting for final payout (unlike Betting West).

Whilst the issue of the class action is still pending, I'll likely be asking those interested to provide proxy votes for the upcoming creditor's meeting.

If the liquidator can't provide answers to the questions above, I'd be moving a resolution to appoint another liquidator.

Furthermore, who the hell are Davambros P/L and how can a company owe them almost as much as all their customer's balances???

I was wondering the same thing - I ran the name through some company databases but got nothing. All I could find was that they have held large shareholdings in a couple of companies [held 2.4% of Acrux (a pharma company) shares in 2004 and 0.5% of TZ Limited (focuses on product development and engineering services) shares in 2007] and are big donors to the Salvos.

Best guess is that they had invested/loaned some money and had some kind of agreement with SportsAlive

Well I can happily say that we (puntclub.com members) have our money back.

The absolute champion blokes at puntclub.com (all betting through this web site was done through Sports Alive) have announced yesterday that they will honour any money lost which in my clubs case was actually up near 8k.

I'm not sure how they will go chasing the money themselves but I wish them luck and thank them for being such stand up blokes through this.

Cox Plate will be massive!!!
