Damien Hardwick has called on umpires to provide superstar Dustin Martin with greater protection from taggers ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster clash with West Coast at Optus Stadium.

Martin was held to just 16 disposals by Ben Jacobs in the Tigers’ win over North Melbourne last week and Eagles midfielders Elliot Yeo and Mark Hutchings have been flagged as possible opponents for the Brownlow Medal winner.

Yeo won plenty of plaudits for his negating job on Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe in the derby last month and his versatility means he could go with Martin when the Tigers gun pushes forward.

Hardwick said he did not contact the AFL umpiring department about Martin's physical treatment in the North Melbourne defeat.

However, he used his weekly press conference on Friday morning to put the whistlebowers on notice before the top-of-the-table showdown with West Coast.

“It’s not often we see Dustin getting beaten and he took that on board and Jacobs did a great job, but we probably thought he could’ve got a little bit more protection from the umpires at various stages,” Hardwick said.

“He’s a ball player and he only got one free kick for the day. That’s something we can’t control, but the fact of the matter is that we want to see the ball players play.

“Ben Jacobs did a terrific job last week but we expect Dustin to bounce back this week.”

Hardwick said he had not followed Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson’s lead to raise his concerns direct with AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan.

“That’s for the umpires to determine and see how they play,” Hardwick said.

“All we ask is that the players playing the ball get a fair go.”

Ruckman Toby Nankervis remains in doubt with a wrist injury and must get through Friday morning’s training session at Punt Road Oval. Ivan Soldo looms as his replacement.

Richmond will take up to two travelling emergencies on their flight to Perth on Saturday.

Yep, can't wait for us to be ignored again as they spend hours on Essendon's win or how shit Carlton are.

Or how Richmond lost.

TBH though, I don’t think we’ve ever won a game vs a Vic team, the Vic teams have always managed to lose the game. The only time we win is because of home ground advantage & the poor old pampered Victorians have to actually travel, on a plane for 4 hours before the game every once in a while.

I shouldn’t be so negative, I’m sure we’ll get a solid 30 seconds of “Jack Darling is actually good, i’m shocked” even though he’s been one of the best 2nd talls in the game for a while and has kicked 50+ goals every season but 2. “LeCras has turned his career around” “Naitanui is actually really good, BUT he still only gets 12 disposals a game which is fine for Cyril but not Nic, unless he played over here, then we’d all be lining up to suck his ****” “Optus has quickly become a fortress, I had them pegged for losing the home ground advantage”
“We had this as the game for them to prove to us they’re the real deal, now they need to prove to us they’re the real deal by winning at the G”

Nothing new but David King confirmed that he is an A grade flog with the analytical ability of a gnat that has just impacted upon a windshield.

I quite like Kingy. I think he’s one of the few old guard that have actually shown an interest in advancing footy analysis beyond kicks, handballs, marks and tackles. It can be a bit much in the presentation, but I like watching him break down footage with the telestrator. I think he’s made some decent points while fronting up Fox Footy’s dipping of their toe into the pool of advanced stats.

That said the sentiment towards us, “let’s see them win over here, haven’t played anyone good here”, while also pumping Melbourne’s tyres and saying “you can only play who’s in front of you” is a bullshit hypocritical stance.

On Kingy - this is one point he made about Geelong after Round 2 that stood out for me. Scoring rate per inside 50 is the sort of thing you don’t get from anywhere else, so I appreciate it. Doesn’t give you a free pass but I think he does look a little deeper than the typical box score stats.

Whether it's just a researcher feeding it to him or if it's actually an area of interest for him, I usually feel like he gives some of the best in-studio insight. Could take or leave him on game day.
