On a broader note, I would love to see some studies done on police officers and/or military personnel who go on to commit serious crime - Parsons, De',Angleo in the US, Colin Creed and others.

I wonder if some become desensitised to crime/violence, and the authority they have somehow warps their brain.

Just greed like the other poster said probably an adrenaline rush as well his only mistake was leaving blood on a fence if he hadn’t cut himself he would never have been arrested and we would have never known his identity.

Have no problem with him taking his own life seems like he didn’t have much longer left anyway. He should have been caught back in 2008 but he got away.

Maybe, or maybe there are so many people in these fields that it's inevitable some will be criminals.

He started offending before he had cancer, everyone is probably asking the same question why... His daughter won funniest home videos grand final and took home 100k a few years before.
Oddly, I think this fuelled his greed, along with the inside knowledge on policing and the thrill of the act.
They were certainly not struggling.
Basically he was just a pathological liar, who truly only cared for himself.
This was his final selfish, gutless act, and got all the attention he needed.
Job done.

Nothing his family got to keep all his assets that was the deal if he pled guilty. He only paid back the money he stole.
