Biggest Finals Chokes Ever?

Even as an Essendon supporter, we choked massively in the 99 prelim final. Missed plenty of easy shots on goal all game and failed to play with any intensity or desire.

It appeared to me that it looked like we thought we already had it won before the game started, that we simply had to turn up to win, and that we were already looking ahead to the following week.

We did not expect Carlton to challenge us and when they did it ruffled us and took us a long time to get into our grove and then our inaccurate kicking and Kouta pulling out the greatest quarter of his career killed us.

Hahaha, but the reason Geelong outscored Hawthorn over the final three quarters of the 1989 Grand Final was because the Hawks finished with just 13 fit players.

From midway through the first quarter we had no one on left on interchange bench. Three of our champions, Platten, Ayres and DiPierdomenico were gone for the game. You were only allowed two on the bench, so Dipper had to stay out there with broken ribs and a punctured lung. Brereton was also vomiting and pissing blood. All this in the first quarter!

Geelong played dirty, took out some of our best players, had the numerical advantage for THREE quarters, but they still couldn't win. No wonder averyone used to laugh and call them handbaggers. This inferiority complex of theirs saw them choke in another three Grand Finals in the 90's.

Gary Ablett was probably the king of the chokers. After he kicked 9 goals against the injury-depleted Hawks in the '89 Grand Final, he barely got a kick in the month of September.

LOL, yet your key injuries happened in the first quarter when you lost players such as Brereton for that period. Nice try though!

Geelong are probably the biggest choke artists in the leagues history, there needs to be a separate thread just for them :thumbsu:

Yeah I have thought of the filth don't worry, I'd say you guys are just ahead though, due to your stirling late eighties-mid nineties performance. :thumbsu:

Nobody has said Carlton in 1993 and 1994. I'm old enough to remember those chokers. They featured champions of the calibre of Steve Kernahan, Craig Bradley, Greg Williams (who had his best ever season in '94), Koutoufides, McKay, fullback of the century, Steve Silvagni and many more...

Essendon's 1993 premiership team was entertaining to watch, but possibly the least-talented team to ever win the Grand Final. Carlton were destroyed by the Baby Bombers, it was a rout from the word go. Essendon had some very ordinary players, kids like Olarenshaw, Calthorpe, Hills, Wallis and Chris Daniher. Not to mention their promising teenagers like Hird, Mercuri, Misiti and Fletcher. Highly embarrassing for the Blues to be thumped so badly by a bunch of lightweight kids.

You'd think Carlton would be desperate to atone for their 1993 Grand Final choke. And they were. They finished 2nd on the ladder in 1994, one game behind the eventual premiers, West Coast, but with the league's best percentage. Under the old McIntyre Final 8 system, Carlton (2nd) met Melbourne (7th) in the first week of the finals. After half time, the Blues were never in it and went down by 28 points to a pumped up Dees side, with the Ox, David Schwarz inspirational.

Never mind. With their double chance, Carlton faced Geelong (4th) in the knock-out Semi Final. The Cats had a ridiculous injury list. They were missing the following All-Australians: Hocking, Bairstow, Couch, Bews, Mansfield and Stoneham. Nobody gave Geelong a chance. Amazingly, the Blues were soundly whipped by a bunch of nobodies. The Cats had players out there who were unrecognised by their own fans. Carlton trailed all day by 5 goals and lost by 33 points.

Carlton had finished 2nd on the ladder, but they were bundled out in straight sets, beaten by undermanned teams who'd won just 12 and 13 games in the home and way season.

Being a Geelong supporter I have seen a few. 2005 semi final was the worst I've seen. 4 goals up in the west in a low scoring game. A debacle.

97 prelim was a shocker. Bulldogs went goalless in the last quarter I still remember Mark West (who played about only 10 games) missed an absolute dolly straight in front which would have sealed the deal.

Essendon 1999 was pretty bad. Carlton did choke in '93 but they turned the tables in '99. This time the Bombers were beaten by a bunch of nobodies. Carlton had finished 6th and got smashed in the first final...yet still made the Granny?? I think they changed the finals draw the next year. ;)

Maybe we should look at your performances as it may make you think before posting.

1986 - Beat teams 1 and 2 to get to the Grand Final and choke to Hawthorn after beating them two weeks earlier.

1993 - Felt you had Essendon smashed all over before the game had started especially your coach and then lost by 10 goals.

Compared with Geelong

1989 - Came from third to get to the Grand Final after losing in week 1. No time did they show they were the dominant side in the finals series.

1992 - West Coast had our measure easily in the Second Half of the season. Need I say anymore

1994 - Came from 4th with 2 wins after the siren. Luck had a big part of getting us into this Grand Final.

1995 - Top two teams played off. Team #1 won rightly and were clearly favourites.

Maybe you should think about your club's own experiences before posting

Carlton should have acheived more all those years of breaking the rules.

93 - choke
94 - choke - Thankyou Aaron Lord - Anti- Carlton hero
2000 - choke - against Melbourne - Brad Green - Anti Carlton hero
2009 - choke -

Then there's the issue of those spoons....:thumbsu:

Collingwood every year. Carltons choke in the quarter final at the gabba last year. We had that game in the bag until our spud of a coach made some poor decisions that costed us the game. Lets hope he is switched on this season.

What about the Hawks in the 1984 Grand Final well in front at 3/4 time overrun by Essendon.

Carlton may have their fair share of champions in 93 but we had a fair share of the not so good Mark Athorn,Bret Sholl & Tim Powell for three.

Wrong. Geelong in 89 also achieved this feat. If it wasn't for Hawthorn having a stellar first quarter and getting 7 goals up they would have lost.

Ablett wouldn't have kicked those final quarter goals if Geelong were still in the match.

They still deny this quarter is the reason for the win though, just like they deny rushed behinds or that they Bradburied 08.

How do you 'Bradbury' a match when the opposition kicks 5 goals from free kicks to your 0 goals from free kicks and you still end up with more scoring shots than them?

Has to be Carlton 09 EF. 5 goals up after Cam Cloke jagged one from outside 50 with 12 minutes to go.
Don't forget this game triggered a clause in his contract that meant Carlton had to pay his 2010 contractual amount when they cut him, as he met the minimum requirement for senior games played.

The gift that keeps on giving :thumbsu:

Cats 2008.

Not just that they lost the game they were favoured to win, but guys like Mooney and Ottens missing sitters.

Hmm, not sure about that. Both were terrible misses for sure, but they were in the second quarter - they had plenty of time to atone for it. There were plenty of other misses in the third quarter too.

I put it down much more to guys in our forward line being absolutely absymal on the day (Lonergan, Varcoe, Stokes three shining examples), and Hawthorn far superior in taking their chances. Geelong clearly won the clearances and inside 50s, so it wasn't like the whole side played like crap, they didn't. Just the forward line was shithouse (very happy two of the culprits weren't there in 2009).

Carlton's final quarter at the Gabba last year would have to go close

They led by four goals at 3/4 time and then went to water

One of the biggest finals chokes I've seen in a long time.

It was very funny at the time, considering all the noise their fans had been making

They led by 5 goals actually. Even more embarrassing.

Given how crap Carlton have been the last 5 years it's pretty embarrassing that you lot were 5 goals down in a final at your home ground against them! If you had have played them interstate you most likely would have been flogged as you were the next week. Or did Carlton soften you up for the next game? HAhahaha

Look at the Gold Coast bandwagoner desperately trying to whip up a rivalry. He's in quite a little frenzy.

I can't even get emotionally engaged with you or your franchise. Wait till your club actually exists at AFL level and then we'll talk.

Don't get me wrong, it's going to be cute to have our own little Freo down the road, but I really have nothing to engage with you on while your 'club' is nothing more than an ABN number at this stage.
