Agreed , the list is flawed, neon set the game up and that thomas goal from 50 was very much unfrontrunnery.... Who is collingwoods? Not too many passengers in that side, H.Shaw went missing in some games early but it looked more like a kid not dealng with a player taking him out of the contest, and you still won i think?? So the question stands who is collingwoods? Wood fans?

We don't really have any in our best 22, which is why we do okay without any real superstars. No superstars, but no frontrunners / passengers. As said above, Lonie and Egan would definitely be two. I wouldn't say Heath Shaw, he just can't handle a tag.

And for Thomas, it wasn't just his goal. It was his entire second half - two contested marks, 16 disposals @ 90% efficiency - most of which were kicks (20 total, 7 contested), 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 7 one-percenters and 6 running bounces (after our midfield had been totally stagnant during the second quarter). He took the game on, won the ball, and actually hit targets. He got us back in the game.

since when has front-runner meant from what I can tell from this thread "passenger"?

Front-runner to me has always been not underdog ie favourite to win something.

young kiddies and their fully sic ways

My interpretation of frontrunner is someone who only plays well when the team is winning. Of course this is problematic, because some players are a sides barometer, and the side is only winning when they're playing well.

But I might be way off.

this poll is an absolute waste of f`n time most of these players are all guns and play well even if there teams playing bad
my choice outa all them crap choices is nick dal santo
aww yeh his not on it is he wonder why cos the guy who made this has no idea wat front runner means ay

How are O'Loughlin and Westhoff front-runners?

Or maybe I have misunderstood the definition of the term. Can someone please clarify it for me?

In terms of this thread, front runner (I think) is talking of one who has the largest difference in effect on games between when the team is going well and when it is not. For example the Steve Waugh is perhaps one of the worst front runners in history in that he was at his best when the team was in the most trouble, when making runs seemed easier he often found it more difficult.

Westhoff and O'Loughlin have many long periods or even entire games where their impact on games is non existant or very minimal. Both are at their best when the team is at their best and each play very well at these times.

Westhoff, good year in '07 when team made grand final, useless this year. One example of O'Loughlin which sticks out for me is the 100 point plus thrashing of Richmond where he played on McGuane on debut and kicked 5. Front runners such as these two will never cause a momentum shift in a game or get their team back into it, they only ski downhill.

Does anyone disagree?

Obviously, the mids and backs need to play well to deliver the ball to Westhoff and O'loughlin...
Where is Jordan McMahon btw?

Inherantly forwards are front running players more so than backs or mids but O'Loughlin and Westhoff more so than almost any other IMO. Jordan McMahon is king of the front running, I agree with you there Powerade 08 - the bloke's a spud.

Thomas by far, would have to be one of the most over rated players in the league. I watch a lot of football and I rarely see him getting any contested ball just a flashy in patches player, nothing more.

For someone who watches a lot of football, you must watch with one or both of your eyes closed - particularly when Thomas single handedly ripped your team in the wet in 2007. Thomas is ranked 5th in contested possessions at Collingwood, averaging 6 contested possessions a game, despite ranking 12th in possessions - over 40% of his possessions are contested. He is third in contested marks. He consistently puts his head over the ball - he didn't have a massive impact on the game, but he did it several times when the heat was in the Semi Final - he also took a courageous mark running back with the flight.

Thomas is definitely inconsistent and does fade in and out of games. But the fact a player plays playing well correlates with his team winning means one of two things: he is a frontrunner, or he is a gamebreaker. In Thomas' case, it is definitely the latter. When he plays well, Collingwood wins. Thomas has 63 games experience, but he still only a 3rd player who just turned 21.

Don't bother with the facts, they don't want to hear it. A lot of people here are determined that Thomas is a soft, front running junk time specialist, even though they have no evidence to back it up.

i understand the desire to defend your players but dont you ever wonder why everyone thinks thomas is so overrated ?

maybe because its true ?

Rioli, frontrunner, he is in his first bloody year and has won two games on his own when his teammates decided to leave early

if anyone at hawthorn resembles a front runner it Clinton young based on this years form compared to others.

including any first year player in a poll based on this is just crap.

its like saying that [rookie with no games] is a front runner

Well yes it does confuse me that there's so much hate for a third year player who has performed in big games on a number of occasions, and constantly puts his body on the line.

Yes he's inconsistent, and maybe he is over hyped by the media, but he is criticised for being soft, which simply isn't true. I don't have a problem if people criticise him for going missing at times, because he undoubtly does, although that's not really surprising for a young player playing as a small forward

But when the pressure is on, he generally stands up and has gotten us over the line in a number of games already. I realise he didn't do much on the weekend, but he had about 20 friends there.
