1. Danger (8xAA, sustained brilliance)
2. Fyfe (2 Brownlows, awesome peak)

(daylight)

3. Martin (one good year)
"One good year" lol...

  • 69 times he had 20+ disposals and 2+ goals. That is 10 times more than any other player over the last 15 years. Gary Ablett is next on 59 and Patrick Dangerfield on 58. That’s a significant gap with two walk-up Hall of Famers.
  • The broken tackle stat started the year Dusty came into the competition. He’s had 377 broken tackles over a 15-year campaign. The next most is Jack Viney on 213. That’s 164 more than any other player.
  • He’s won 49 per cent of one on one contests. The next highest player is 42 per cent being Nat Fyfe, then Dangerfield at 41. It is outrageous how much better a one on one player he has been over a 15-year career. The average is 25 per cent.
  • Then you look at what he does when he’s been a target inside forward 50. When Richmond have gone to him, they’ve scored a goal 30 per cent of the time. No other player has done that in 15 years. He’s been the best forward 50 target in 15 years. The average is around about 18 per cent.
  • Our AFL Player Ratings ironically started the year Dusty came in. He was the No.1 rated player on the ground for five consecutive matches from the 2020 finals series into 2021. Only Dangerfield has done that for five consecutive matches.
  • His 2017 Grand Final is the second highest rated Grand Final of all-time. Luke Shuey’s 2018 Grand Final is miles ahead of anyone else, Dusty comes in at No.2. The rating was 30. If you get a 15 rated game, that’s an All-Australian type game. If you get a 20, it’s wow. If you get a 30 then you just go back and watch that performance over and over and over.
  • His 2020 Grand Final comes up as the sixth best Grand Final. Keep in mind that is with shortened quarters. If you extrapolate that out to a full game then it comes out as the second best Grand Final as a 32 rated game.
  • His 2019 Grand Final comes out as the 12th best Grand Final.
  • Overall he has been the No.1 rated player on the ground six times from 16 finals. No other player has done that.

Dusty’s Finals Ratings

  • His ratings in the 12 finals between 2017 and 2020 where Dusty was in his prime. He had one poor final out of 12 and that was the night when he couldn’t walk against Collingwood in the 2018 Prelim where they admitted afterwards that he probably shouldn’t have played.
  • His Qualifying Final in 2017 he was 2nd highest. Prelim in 2017 against GWS he was 6th. Grand Final in 2017 he was No.1.
  • 2018 Qualifying Final he was 1. 2018 Prelim, throw that in the bin.
  • 2019 Qualifying Final he kicked six goals against Brisbane, 3rd highest player. 2019 Prelim against Geelong he was 11th. Grand Final day he was No.1.
  • 2020 Qualifying Final against Brisbane, they lost, he was 9th. This is the best - they’re in a bit of trouble, they’ve lost their first final, he wakes up and goes No.1 in the Semi, No.1 in the Prelim and No.1 in the Grand Final. He went whack, whack, whack and brought home a flag.
  • The 20-plus rating which is the wow factor, he has done that eight times in finals. The next most is five - Josh Kennedy, Joel Selwood and Dangerfield. He’s miles ahead.
  • The three years they won a flag in 2017, 2019 & 2020 - in each of those Prelims and each of those Grand Finals, he’s had 20+ disposals and 2+ goals.

Fantastic lol.
Got to wonder how many people actually watch football if they’re taking 2 blokes that can’t kick over one of the greatest of all time.
Must just be trolling, like the Geelong bloke that started this thread by picking Martin and then decided to do everything but, in his comments that proceeded it. Fun read lol

By all means, please put forward a players season that eclipses all the awards (Which is every single one) that Dustin Martin won in 2017.
I’ll wait…. lol
You realise winning every award in 2017 only means he was better than other players in 2017. Does not mean he was automatically better therefore than any play ever in another season?

Fyfe was unstoppable in 14,15 but injuries stopped him building the career of the other two.
20+ game seasons
Fyfe 6
Martin 11
Dangerfield 11

Out of 6 seasons of footy (some still interrupted by injury)
Aflca best young player 11
3x Bnf
3xAA
2x Brownlow 15,19
2x MVP 14,15
4 out of 6 years he was recognised by the competition for his season.
Fyfe didn't get a premiership medal, the other 2 did

Dusty became the GOAT. Including the single best season by any player in VFA/VFL/AFL history.

The others were just ordinary players.
To be honest, in strangely put my vote in for Dangerfield. I don't know why.

As much as I love Fyfe, I couldn't vote for him as he didn't get a premiership medal.

Voting for Dustin Martin would be too obvious. Yeah 3 premiership medals and 3 Norm Smith medals in 2017, 2019 and 2020 is too obvious.

I voted Dangerfield for 2 reasons.

1. He played and won finals at both crows (2008-15) and cats (2016-2024).

2. Like the great Giant Baba in All Japan pro wrestling. The long drawn out path to the top or road to success is usually a memorable one. So Dangerfield getting that elusive medal in 2022 and possibly 2024 will always be looked backed fondly

For better career success. difficult to see too many above Martin in all of AFL/VFL history. He did achieve and succeed on the biggest days.

Yep, Finals football (when it truly matters most, even though it only lasts for a month) is a different level to Home & Away footy.

Regardless of where people rank/rate/assess Martin, one thing is for sure - he truly excelled and thrived in Finals footy: 3 Gary Ayres awards, 3 Norm Smith medals to go with 3 Premierships, says it all.

His output in Home & Away footy was very good but there's other players who have better Home & Away records but what elevates Martin (in my opinion) is what he was able to achieve and deliver when it mattered most, in Finals football.

Home & Away footy may last the longest duration wise, but Finals footy whilst it lasts for a short time (only a month) is the most important period of the season.

Martin "burnt both ends of the candle"....that is he did well in Home & Away footy but also did well in Finals footy too.

So glad he played for Richmond.

The one comment I'll say to that is that the Tigers three premiership victories were:
2017: 108 - 60 (48 point win)
2019: 114 - 25 (89 point win)
2020: 81 - 50 (31 point win)

He was obviously awesome in those games, but the Tigers as a whole blew the opposition away.

That's a fair comment I think. It also shows that as a team Richmond were very strong. It also shouldn't diminish or take away what Martin achieved in those Finals matches and the 3 Grand Finals. He stamped himself in Finals. He was part of a very well oiled machine but he stood tall above all others in that Richmond team. He had big moments.

Richmond was gonna win the 2019 flag vs GWS regardless if Martin played or not.

That was Richmond's easiest win of those 3 flags

Lol completely discounting context here

2017 was close to halftime, we blew them away from midway through the third and dusty was the main architect of that

2020 we were LOSING by over 3 goals just before halftime before dusty kicked one of the biggest goals of his career to pull it back to 15 points, he then went on to kick another 3 goals after halftime and quite literally put the team on his back and will them to victory

What Heeney did Dusty did in a dozen finals including grand finals.
Heeneys reputation has grown because of his performance when it counts. Dangerfield went missing in too many finals.. including games where Dusty dominated.
Simply finals matter more.

Martin has played 16 finals. The first as a 22 year old, the last as a 31 year old. In at least a quarter of them, he ‘went missing.’

Patrick Dangerfield is about to play his 28th final and last week was among the best players on the field in a Qualifying final as a 34 year old. He played his first as a 19 year old and kicked 2 goals, and followed it a week later with 19 touches, 2 goals and a goal assist.
Since then, while not as dominant as Martin, and while there has been games where he’s had a fair bit of ball for not a lot of impact, I would say that in the 25 finals appearances that have followed I would say he’s ’gone missing’ four times at best and with almost metronomic regularity has been one player at both his clubs that his coaches have been able to count on to not vanish without trace.

Maybe do some research.
