People still looking at Keane's age, and not the fact he's only played 31 games .....not exactly an experienced AFL player, so plenty of upside

I did suggest during the season, Keane "could" be that 3rd intercept defender .....Butts and Murray holding down the key posts .....I didn't get a great reaction to the idea

But Keane is our best intercept defender
As we know Butts is perennially injured

It will all work itself out but I can’t see Keane missing unless he loses all form and confidence

Given Keane probably won’t ever be a top tier 1v1 player, he definitely needs to go to another level again as an interceptor, if our defence is going to become more dynamic

Worrell’s intercept counts being so low is kinda strange to me, without re-watching I can’t really figure out why that is
Rubbish !

His strength is his 1 v 1 .....he's an undersized defender that regularly outpoints his opponents, using good bodywork

Re Worrell , just needs a good run at it and can improve his intercept mark numbers

Confidence belief etc and consecutive games and seasons

Agree on all points .....Murray and Keane are locks .....plus Worrell & Max the other locks

Yep this is my point , on this basis alone unless he loses all form Keane is a must have in our side given we aren’t a prolific intercept mark team
The fact he is technically still so raw and learning the game, bit of fire in the belly,
We have tripped over a beauty imo, just
have to keep the home life balance right with him I feel.

He’s shown some very good work against bigger forwards (his work in Showdowns against Dixon comes to mind) - but he’s far from unbeatable, just have to point to the Amartey game

I don’t think he has to be the best 1v1 player to be a key cog FWIW, that job can lie with Murray

Does get goals kicked on him at times eg Amartey

Would like to know how many goals conceded to opponents
31 games Jeff .....still learning AFL Footy

I've said b4, he has an ingrained (Irish) propensity to want to protect the goals ....and this gives him a dilemma between goal square protection and following his man .....his def instincts are not natural yet

To answer your question Jeff, to the eye, a lot of goals .....but so did Murray early on ....it's a part of the learning process unfortunately

I would have said the opposite - his issue is when his opponent gets goal side of him. Keane often gets dragged away from goal, and then once the ball goes over his head he loses his man. His strength is when he can run at the ball and see his opponent at the same time.

The issue we have is that both he and Worrell are similar players - both are great intercept players, and both have above-average disposal, but neither are excellent one-on-one at this stage of their careers. If we play both (and I think we should regardless of whether Butts is available) then one of them will need to play a primarily one-on-one role.

I think this is it. You get more intercept marks from pressured long kicks-in-hope from up the ground. Think of all times we have intercept marks against us and you can picture the scenario.

So my guess is our game plan applies less pressure between the arcs.

Another explanation is we play a spare defender less than other teams.

Another explanation is we set up similarly to other teams but our fwds and mids just apply less pressure (because they’re slow or lazy or unfit or badly coached?)
I don't think it's necessarily the game plan, as defensive intent and pressure around the ball seems to be prioritised. We're just not quite delivering on it yet

2024 average

Intercept marks.

Keane. 2.4
Butts. 1.7
Borlase. 1.3
Max. 1.3
Muzz. 1.2
Worrell. 1.2

In the last 10 games each player played Keane avge 2.8 and Woz 1.0
Think Keane could be top 10 in league next year, very excited in his potential.
Woz got injured and subbed off more than once and had a small sample size to begin with

It’s a young defence and we don’t have an absolute elite intercept mark yet

Its as simple as that

Keane is the one that could get there on evidence

It’s worked on average per game.
Their average T.O.G was only 14% difference per game over the year so you can factor that in if you want but that’s only .015 of an intercept mark extra.

His 3 sub games he had already completed 57 , 83 and 45% Time On Ground.

Personally think Wozz is a Gun who can intercept. Who knows may swap them around by need.

love both of them

Maybe when worrell gets it he is more of an offensive 3rd tall so his positioning is different

Yep but facts at moment are different than your trust level or ‘feel’

Keane is factually our most prolific intercept mark
Worrell is better 3rd man up to spoil imo.

We looked really good in defence when we have both Worrell & Michaelanny patrolling the half back line... then throw in Hinge & Keane, we have decent intercepting power.

He's probably the only decent spoiler in our side.

I have to have a rare disagreement with you there, Wayne. Keane is great with ball in hand, but poor at one-on-one marking contests. He regularly stands behind and goes for the push in the back.

I don’t disagree Keane plays from behind …. but don’t most KPD’s these days ?

Push in the back …. great bodywork ….. tomato tomata ;)

I don't think it's that at all. As Stab said, it's about pressure applied to opposition entries into their forward line. Our midfield is often burnt off allowing pressureless entries directed at actual targets. Our entries, whilst improving, are still over represented with hack or indiscriminate long kicks purely to make ground. These are much easier to pick off. Plus we push a player up to the contests, allowing an oppo loose man to feast on our hack entries.
Bit of that for sure

But who are our intercept marks that go to another club and become elite at it there ?

Keane maybe and who else ?

Lever
McGovern
Doedee if he gets injury free.
