Bigman’s Training Reports

Opening bounce round 1, the season and game was alive, ie slow, perfect football. Game getting away from you, throw caution to the wind. Opening bounce round 2, season and game alive, slow and perfect guys, no mistakes. 4 points going down gurgler, do something, anything, we just need to score. This has been us since 2021.

The continued reversion to slow & safe movement might be a confidence in developing group issue that mightn't be relevant to 2025. But it could also be an embedded feature due to the psychology of the senior coach or that of the group, which has only just had its first meaningful opportunity to change added. Hopefully adding another year of experience, 3 best 22 players and premiership forward line coach eliminates what has been a fairly obvious lack of braveness at various times.
Watch the video when he joined us, he refers to defence

Interesting that it’s the exact opposite of how Cats reportedly trained. Training based upon reliance of oppo not getting equal numbers to the ball seems a little optimistic.

I assume the idea is when we've turned the ball over and there are free players out. Need to capitalise before they get shut down, etc.

The likelihood of players finding themselves in the same positions that we drill over and over in match sim is slim. If players don’t know when to run to support the contest and where to go to be an attacking option then they never will.

I don't really know how the sim is being played. Are they starting in the same positions every time? Or is it just a gaggle of players?

Matthews: ...."tell Akermanis to get to the front of the pack !!!!!"

You'd think the players know ...

I presume it’s fixed to some extent given Bigman thought it important enough to mention the attack:defender ratio, so there must be some consistency to it.

2023 was a big outlier , turns out not the norm . Just a one off

There was quite a significant patch where we were the best ball movement team in comp that season and it showed with being the highest scoring team

Our score source dominance was definitely from back half turnovers and slick ball movement more than being a winning stoppage team

At this stage it was just a temporary outlier and we reverted back to a poor looking uninspiring game plan in 2024

We absolutely had a jump in 2013 and a drop in 2014, but both are entirely predictable in hindsight. Both part of an overall maturity of the younger squad and ageing of the veterans.

We don't have to assume the worst possible outcome as a ceiling to 2025. There's a range of outcomes available for 2025, but finals is definitely one of them.

I'd rather hope for success and be wrong, than hope for failure and be right. We'll both feel the same from August next year onwards, but at least my next 8 months will be more enjoyable 😀

No that’s not correct. We did not play on at all, we tried to move the ball by passing it, that’s instruction when everyone is doing it.
I'm not sure what you're saying is not correct.

A rebound game is not necessarily a running game.

A rebound game is pressure around the ball/contest leading to turnovers that you rebound from, normally by foot.

We put mature bodies there for pressure, but we weren't getting enough people to the contest.

Rahilly also responsible for ball movement wasn't he (in addition to our #1 ranked forward line)?

Losing the Assistant Coach of the year was clearly a big blow. As others have speculated, I wonder if we would bring him back to replace Nicks IF Nicks fails again this year (which I don't think he will but time will tell)

I usually love Riddles

No, Burns was the main guy (with some Van Berlo mixed in). After all, it's the half back line that controls ball movement.

That said, the loss of Rahilly did have a flow on effect here because Burns took over the forwards.

ok fair enough, thanks. I had read this and assumed Rahilly was also responsible for ball movement but happy to stand corrected

Crows Head of Football Adam Kelly said while disappointed to lose Rahilly, the Club understood his desire to return to Victoria for family reasons.

“A number of our forwards have significantly improved under his guidance and he has been instrumental in building connection across the group with respect to our ball movement, which puts us in a strong position moving forward.

I am sure i also read that Rahilly was in charge of our ball movement as well as the number forward line in the league.

I think you are right.

Well the next 3 at least

Bad news guys. Went to AAMI today and the ground is being scarified. They must be training elsewhere probably Richmond. So no report today fellas you’ll have to rely on Ingram and Money.

Should be able to get a report on Wednesday though.
How dare they not let you know.

This Club....
