Bigman’s Training Reports

ROB is probably the safest in our team this year.

Our plan "b" ruck option is too far back to get a run. Without injury, ROB is guaranteed all year.
I think you’ve missed the point.
He’s safe by default. Which is not the same as being a player that is in no danger of getting dropped.

Noticed when I passed aami early this morning that there was some equipment out, so came back around 9 and indeed the lads were training for the first Saturday session I can recall.

JFC can someone in the know please hook this man up with the training schedule so he doesn't have to check every oval in South Australia each time there might be a training session on.

I said it a while back that the Club should be working with the bigman as his content is far more engaging than anything that is put out by the Club via the official channels.

More and more I think he might be our answer at CHF in a post-Tex world. He’s a natural at finding space and providing leads up the ground, plus it would give him the space to use his lovely foot skills and lateral movement.

**** yes, this makes so much sense and helps maximise he talents/ability rather than being just some drab defender.

The reality is tall midfielders are uncommon. Outside of Cripps 195cm, Bont 192cm most are shorter or if they are taller just aren't that good. The chance of him (or anyone) being a gun mid at that height is super low.

We would be a touch top heavy in the forward line with Tilly, Fog and Curtin but gives us a chance to absolutely vulture a third tall matchup. And Curtin could still go on ball to mix things up occassionally like dogs do with Bont.

I said it at the end of last year and every report of Bigmans I read I believe it more.

This year we should no longer be worrying about how to find a position for Curtin. We need to pick him first and see what positions are left for everyone else. Just leave the damn magnet on the board!
He needs to take a page out of Dawson's book and just tell Nicks where he's playing.

The incident between Keane and Toby Murray on Saturday appeared to have spilled over into today’s session. It would seem some of the lads aren’t too happy with Keane’s aggressiveness at training and let him know about it, including Jones pelting the footy right at the Irishman’s face. Was quite the interesting side-act to what was otherwise a reasonably low key session.

Once again a pretty good turnout in numbers today although Smith was a no-show while Cook joined Cumming in rehab. Cook didn’t seem particularly sore so I’m assuming whatever affliction he has is on the minor end.

Thilthorpe did about half the session (and was great) before joining the rehab group as did Draper and Welsh. Tex appeared to sit out the majority of the session, hopefully just management.

Both Pedlar and Berry appeared to tweak their ankles but recovered ok. Toby Murray also copped a corkie in a marking contest but after a few minutes of limping he was fine.

Was good to see a couple of the academy kids in Dyson Sharp and Matt Leray join the lads today, although they only did bits and pieces. Both fair lumps of lads too, Sharp already looks like a man out there.

Definitely an emphasis this summer on players having multiple positions.
One of the drills (named Cheese after Cumming, guessing it’s from the GWS system?) had Edwards listed as a midfielder, Burgess as a ruck and Taylor/Rachele/Curtin as forwards, all different from Saturday.

All in all not a massive amount to take out of today. Nankervis mentioned recently one of the sessions each week is on the lighter side which I’d suggest was today’s. Still a few players I’d like to highlight though:

Jones - made one or two mistakes but overall his delivery by foot was very good, low and sharp. Will be interesting to see if he plays round one with a healthy list - feels like he’s right on the edge, possibly sub material. Regardless, is having a sneaky good summer without dominating.

Curtin - halfway through the session I thought I finally wasn’t going to mention him in a report, then he played forward in the match-sim style ‘Cheese’ drill and took about three or four marks on the lead, including one on the wing where he instantly rolled on and was too quick for his opponent. I’m happy we are trialling him as a midfielder but he’s got key forward written all over him.

Thilthorpe - only did about half the session but took some great clunk marks and just looks huge out there. He’s at the point now where I just expect him to win one on one contests such is his improvement in this area.

Murray - probably the standout today, took some great contested marks and gave some great drive from half back with his speed and big hoof. Looks to be very confident in the knee. Short kicking is still an issue, would probably rather he just go the long bomb when possible.

Ryan - by no means dominated but gee his kicking was excellent today. Chiselled some tasty kicks that weren’t easy by any means. Would love to see him take the game on even more as he has the pace for it, hopefully we see that emerge once true match sim starts.

Neal-Bullen - didn’t have a lot of wow moments aside from one beautiful no-look handball to the outside receiver, but one thing you quickly notice is he rarely makes mistakes. Some of the other lads will have the odd dropped mark, fumble or mis-kick but I almost never see it from Nibbler.

Milera - probably his best session for the summer and great to see him recovering well from that hamstring. Admittedly today’s drills did really suit the half backs but his poise and use by foot was as good as anyone out there, and multiple times he pushed up high to deliver inside 50 which you want to see.

Draper - still being managed but had a couple of nice moments where he received the ball and immediately put the step on his opponent. Occasionally in congestion gets wrapped up and doesn’t have the strength to break tackles at the moment. Give him a little space though and he’s off to the races.

Borlase - continues to have a solid summer. Noticed in the aerial drills he was too good for Burgess and was able to match it with Fog at times. Can get himself into trouble trying to evade a quicker opponent.

T. Murray - bit of a roller coaster this lad. Can look very ordinary at times but when his confidence is up he suddenly starts doing some genuinely impressive things in the air. Think we will need to be patient with him if he’s to make it, definitely needs more time in the oven before he’s AFL ready.

Lots of positives I know but I’m usually pretty fair when it comes to noting the bad stuff, there just wasn’t a whole lot of it today. Some of the lads like Max, Taylor, Nankervis, Sholl and even Rankine were pretty quiet today but they’ve been great in other sessions, every player has the odd day they just can’t get into it.

Thanks again Bigman.

Very interested to hear your views on Dyson Sharp through the week, though I expect he'll get limited exposure.

Jones pelting the footy at Keane would've been interesting! Didn't know he really had the angry pills in him. Anybody come in to remonstrate or was it all left?

He screams leader to me

The one who looks to impose himself on games at times of need, who gets injected into the middle when we need a spark etc
Spot on.

There were a number of games where in the 4th quarter he said right I'm not willing to lose and just imposed himself on the game and you could see those around him lift. The Carlton and showdown game was a classic example.

A couple of times he even pushed himself too far and got injured, Collingwood and Melbourne games come to mind. But this shows his desire and belief that he can change the course of the game. That is leadership. Not this touchy feely stuff or interview skills.

That's what you want out there setting the example, especially to young players. Thats the level we expect of a leader.

Does Rankine want to be a club leader?

It's not just a ranking of the most talented players. It should be about those who give the most to the development of others.
I remember an interview with Wayne Jr, when asked about his leadership qualities & he basically replied that He'd never really considered it but after he, was asked to, decided that it probably comes with territory of being a senior player in such an inexperienced group..
Hardly a ringing endorsement
but you know, what's best for the club eh.

Curtin could be very effective splitting his as a half forward/ wingman or even in the Tom Lynch role.

He could, especially the wingman who can drift forward. I don't know if I'd bother with the other direction, as the Tom Lynch role is a nothing role for a tall (though good for a small).

Though, all of that does come off with a whiff of "talented player who doesn't have a genuine spot", and I don't know if Adelaide can genuinely afford Curtin to end up in that kind of spot.

We don't need to burden him with official leadership bulls!t. |

Let him play his natural game and lead that way.
Agreed.

Some prefer to just lead by example on the field and leave it at that.

Leaders are born and some get better at it, players will gravitate and take inspiration from them
naturally. Putting them in and calling them a group is so artificial .

We really don't have a Plan B ruck, that was made crystal clear last year when they gave Strachan a shot, surely even Strachan biggest fans can see that now. I'm sure Toby Murray will get a run if ROB gets an injury but I think at best he's only a chop out option, hopefully Thilly won't even be considered, much too vauable to be hacking around in ruck.

It's pretty interesting given as bad as Strachan went, outside of hitouts, he matched ROB in pretty much every other stat and off less. And off 20% less TOG. Just shows how absolutely useless ROB is once the ruck contest has concluded. And even then, it was only our centre clearance numbers that suffered to any great degree. ROB really has turned into a fairly large problem.

I'm no ROB fan but those stats are kind of irrelevant given Strachan played 2 games and couldn't last any longer.
