Agree with your post about the questions of Laird's role. It's not obvious...and like quite a few in here wouldagree, it looks like a case of favouritism instead of a more ruthless pragmatism. What role does Laird actually play? I don't think its the lockdown small forward role as Max is likely to get the best small forward. He's not a HBF as he's disposal is poor and doesn't run and carry. All that leaves is a loose third defender who will look after mediums? He's too short and small for that. This smacks of trying to fit a player in the lineup where it just doesn't make sense.
Ideally you want Bond taking the most dangerous small forward and releasing Max to being more attacking given he basically has all the weapons, pace, disposal, strength, courage, etc. He would be a menace in the backline for opposition forwards.
But if I was coach, I might try and use Laird in the backline to rove to the talls. Somewhere recently I read that our ground ball gets in our defence was a weak area. Laird would actually be ideal to help address this. Rory might not be great at pure defending or attacking, but he is good at accumulating in tight. What he does with the ball next is variable but it's likely much better than a loose ball spill straight to the oppo small forwards.
I like Nank and want to see what Ryan can offer but he's currently an unknown. I could argue that Nank is too similar to Max and Worrell to offer a point of difference which Laird is.
Laird however would need to improve on his exposed form at half back. Hanging on to his spot won't last forever with such pressure from below.
