Just checked the sportingpulse website and young Cardiff player Ben Simons heading to North Shore in the SAFL. Interesting to see how he goes playing in Sydney, bit of a surprise really that he is leaving the Cardiff.

Surprised he is going anywhere. Has played one 18's game no Senior games and hasn't been training according to my sources, so the step up to North Shore will certainly test him. Maybe the bombers are after something in return for their investment. I am sure they were really impressed that he wasn't even hardly playing football this season .

Even his younger team mates were starting to question his application.

Another week another series of big scores in the BDAFL. Interesting to see the winners of the trophies for the 150 year celebrations last weekend. Tim Snelling was from all reports a worthy winner, havent heard who won it in the City vs Lake Macquarie game, while Brad Spencer and Matt Walsh won the awards despite playing in sides that got beat by over 100 points. While I can say first hand that Walsh played well and I am a massive fan of the way Brad Spencer plays, how can anyone possibly get an award for "Best on Ground" when your side gets comprehensively beaten??? Interesting to say the least!!!!
I think the final four is pretty much set. Terrigal probably the only chance from outside the four to get in there. They will need to cause a couple of upsets to do so, but i dont think it is beyond them. Gosford have been in the game for a fair period against City and Killarney Vale but have been over run in the second half and I cant see them getting into the 4 off these results. Wyong played well in patches against us on the weekend, while the Crows are playing ok but probably a year or 2 off and the Marlins look like getting the spoon again.

Hi city insider,
It would appear that the young fella has moved down to Newcastle City from Muswellbrook and playing first grade only. My sources inform me that he is finally getting the hang of the speed of the BDAFL after being involved in the lower TAFL for a number of seasons.

From a Newcastle City contact it would appear that the Coach is extremely impressed with his performances, and classes him as 'one of the hardest players at the ball, IF NOT the hardest player in the club.' Not a bad rap for a kid who is only 17. Also it would appear that he has taken to the on-ball commission his coach has given him as well as the No. 1 tagger at his disposal. I understand that the rest of players in the Newcastle City team are extremely relieved that he is playing for them and not against them.

I hear that he was the BOG on Saturday against Lake Macquarie, even though he played the last quarter at Full Back and the ball only got down there once (which he turned around and forced the ball forward and another goal eventuated to City). Also I hear that he is in line for Senior Rep. duties for BDAFL in the State Champs. at Wagga in June. The final team list is made on Wednesday night of this week.

I look forward to seeing how the rest of the year goes for the young bloke, whom I have been told is extremely modest, polite and a pleasure to have around but at the same time has total committment to his footy with regards, diet, training, gym and game preparation and the eventual game itself. Good luck to him for the future.

I think the Bulldogs have a telent there that they will continue to foster, good luck to Braedon and the Bulldogs for the future.

deitzy ... I have it on good authority that the trophies were wrongly enscribed - they should have been for the "Player showing the best spirt in the match" - NOT B.O.G. ... Brad Spencer [amongst many others in the Hawks v NB] game showed that spirit.

... I suspect it is the last chance for this young man ... let's hope he does something with it and makes name for himself in AFL.

Gee Interstate, your getting alot of info from down south. Young Brad was given the award (and good luck to him, he's a fighter week in and week out), or so I'm informed after it was voted on by one person!
Any news in relation to the U 18s rams progress, interstate?

lets say i am very close to cardiff. the young ben simon's attitude is not where it should be. id have to say cardiff clearly dont need him.

I think we would all agree with that comment re Cardiff, but you also confirmed that his attitude was not 100%, which is what most who know of him were implying.

Hope he has a dip as far as the Bombers are concerned rather than make the scholarship scheme seem a waste for AFL clubs.

On the other hand, maybe they will throw the scholarships to AFL kids not projects from other sports who simply dont have the passion for the game.

Hey again guys,
Pretty disappointing game from us at Gosford on the weekend. We were in it til half time then dont know what happened! Killarney played well but thats 2 weeks in a row we have been in the game and died in the last half. We still have plenty of work to do but cant see us making the 4 this year. Lots of little things that need to get fixed!
The rep game should be interesting. I think the BDAFL by 2 goals. Hopefully the Crows get a couple of guys in so they have to back up on Sunday!

RAMS went down to Tassie after beating NT and Qld ... good effort to win 2 ... they qualified for the Div 1 finals later this month taking on the big guns in SA, Vic, WA etc

Just having my first look around this forum and it's interesting to note how confident (the unkind would say cocky, but we won't go that far) some of the Cardiff and City supporters are!

I appreciate that these teams have enjoyed a lot of success but as City learned last year, that doesn't mean anything on grand final day.

There are other teams out there, and you should be able to acknowledge the talented and dedicated players who make up these teams as well as celebrating the success of your own.

Just a thought!

Agreed Miss BD, there are plenty of very talented players at all clubs and with many starting to see an influx of their juniors over the last few years and in the future, the gap between the top 5 and the bottom 4 will hopefully close.

Unfortunately there seems to be a large void between the two groups at the moment, hardly a level playing field, but it is what it is.

As for the City and Cardiff examples, Cardiff have been in about 9 of the last 10 grand finals (and are short odds to make it 10), so their supporters/Players are always very keen to talk up their chances and City, well they were beaten by the team that finished second, not one from the bottom four, so they were always going to be in for a hard game.

This is a forum, so lets hope that more people from all clubs join in and talk up their clubs or the league, god knows its a bit slow at times.

i hope for the sake of the scholarship program that he lifts his game so future clubs dont overlook the young players in the region thinking their attitude will follow the same path.

good luck to BDAFL this week.

cant see the gap closeing anytime soon unless the bottom sides realise this a game about fitness these days. look at the top three sides and they are easily the fittest, best examples of this are WB who got a fitness trainer for preseason and City who were training 5 nights a week. Think we will all agree the league has been getting stronger over the years and teams need to realise that to be competitive it requires more that going to training on a tues and thurday night.

That's true but it's always going to be difficult to get total dedication from players when they don't get paid.

Very nice point Miss BD. It is rather amusing to be honest just how confident Cardiff are. Correct me if I'm wrong but as memory serves Warners Bay beat Cardiff two out of the three matches they played last season? Including knocking them out of competition in the semi final? Interesting to see what happens when Cardiff meet a full strength Warners Bay outfit in a few weeks....Also Miss BD it's great to see some chicks on the board!

dont see why you need to pay players to train and be committed, sounds to me like an excuse for why your team is'nt doing well. from what i understand no one at city or cardiff get paid and i doubt anyone at WB is paid. there is'nt enough support or sponsorship for any club to really pay players in this league.

That may be something clubs may have to start considering, in order to attract and retain players for the future... im sure that the league local teams pay their players so as afl expands it may be an avenue clubs should start to look at

Yeah he would want to be more than a fiery character to confront Mr Pessimist i'll give you the hot tip. The only living thing that should be scared of Bronkhorse is a cow as word has it that Bronkhorse eats 91% of Australia's burger products and then acts all tough on the field when a young kid is in his way.
it appears that you are a lounge chair critic Black Diamond King. Obviously not a player of any note, to be continually reporting dribble that you are so very atuned at.

The last time the BDAFL released a survey of clubs I think 6 or 7 players were paid in this league. The total only added up to around $100 a game per player. I think only one club around would consistently pay players and I know of a few players who have been approached with a money offer from this club but knocked it back. If you have the money to do it thats all well and good, but just look at where paying players got Woy Woy after the end of 1999 if you dont do it correctly

Give us a bit more info Deitzy

I think I used the wrong word when I said consistently, seeing as I only know of a couple of instances! I know of two young blokes still in the 18s a few years ago back when I was coaching Gosfords 18s who were offered $50 a game from another coast club to go there and play (thats what they told me the offer was anyway). I was dirty on it at the time but now I think that if you want to attract players to a club you have to offer cash or other incentives, especially if you are a side at the lower end of the ladder. The reality is however, if youre looking for big dollars the BDAFL isnt where you should be looking because 99% of blokes are paying to play
