Just wanted to wish all the BDAFL rep squad all the best before the trip to Wagga.
I am looking forward to travelling with all of you, sharing some laughs and enjoying the weekend.

Just on the subject of umpires and education, etc. I have a problem with the comment about education. The problem being we have a very good coach in Roger Crowhurst (ok, he's pedantic and blunt, but I'm sure every club has one) who does his best to coach and "educate" us. I'm quite sure there is NO current club in the BDAFL who has an ex AFL player / umpire in their ranks. If there is, I've never heard of them. We also have three former state league umpires on the list with over 700 games first grade / state league experience between them (Grant Godfrey, Darrel Luck, Myself) so the experience is there. We have six to eight good young umpires who need time to develop (I'm pretty sure you have a few of those too). The young guys have all come out of playing footy, so they have the experience at playing. I played nearly 100 matches across junior and senior footy before taking up the whistle.
The difficulty is the numbers. We need the numbers and we need the opportunity to make them grow and improve. This won't happen when spectators can jump fences and get to within a metre of an umpire and attempt to spit on them (the person involved I won't name nor will I name the club, but he knows who he is and it was a low act). This will not happen in a culture of Australian Rules where umpires are ridiculed for having the courage to pay a decision. This definitely won't happen in an area where 90% of the spectators have not much knowledge of the rules (yes I'm being harsh, get over it.)
If you guys want things to improve, give the umps a break, stick to playing footy instead of running next to the umpire and abusing and questioning every decision made (it doesn't work.... yet again, I won't name the player or club for I don't pot blokes). I have enjoyed going to clubs after games and having a beer and it is definitely something which should be encouraged to all players and umpires after games.

After all, it is ONLY a game at the end of the day, $66 is not much for umpiring first grade football and putting in 10 - 15 hours a week. We do it because we love the game. I'm guessing the players do it for the same reason too.

All the best to everyone over the break and to those not playing, enjoy the break.

That's one AFL player.

If you ever have read the rules, the hands in the back rule is easy to interpret and I would have no trouble disseminating the information to you. The holding the ball rule has not changed in a long time so I really don't know where you get that from. The general consensus in the BDAFL is a bloke gets tackled, therefore it HAS TO BE holding the ball. That is not the case. Roger is a good coach. We have the education, I'm maybe thinking it's your education that needs to be altered. From the guys I've run with Holding the Ball is the best interpreted rule in the comp.

My best mate used to umpire all round the place. i get to listen to the pedantics of it all..

and from what ive heard from alot of umpires.. their general consensus about roger is this; he does nothing but running at training.

SURELY, our umpires should be practicing calls, watching DVDs, analysing etc. running can be done in their own time.

Agreed there mate.

I personally think the umpiring this year is at the best standard i have seen in the league. However it could just seem this way because cardiff seem to get the most experienced umpires most weeks.

You seem to take an inordinate amount of interest in a club for which you profess to have little respect. I don't really see the problem with the above extract...it seems like a fairly gracious acknowledgement of a defeat. The author was merely noting that, unlike Warners Bay and Newcastle City last week, and other clubs before that, the two clubs were unable to come together after the game and celebrate which is a shame.

I would have been more than happy to stick around for a drink after the game but i wasn't aware this was the norm at seaman oval and im sure there were 21 other cardiff players who were exactly the same. Maybe the warners bay webmaster should consider things like this before making rubbish statements on their website.

agreed with hands in the back. holding the ball decisions have improved this year compared to years gone by where it seemed the players were discouraged from grabbing hold of the ball (which is the purpose of the game) when they were certain to be tackled for fear of giving away a free kick. there are still areas to be improved on but thats the same for players also. good on ya for stickin up for urself tho.

"Unfortunately they didn't get to share a drink with their Cardiff foes after the match"

this is all that was stated on the site. where the rubbish is im not sure but each to their own

Stop playing dumb, we all know Warners Bay have been whining about that for years

Would have to agree with that, Keep up the good work Ashley and co. No matter what people say it does take a lot of courage to be an umpire. Your also right when you say there are not a lot of great footy brains in the region. At the end of the day if your worrying about the umpires than your normally losing. Hint Hint.

Hey Borgsta, there are a number of clubs in the BDAFL that have ex players who have turned their hand to the club umpire duties and it is a belief among some of the clubs that they are doing a good job not a perfect one but a good one.

"Unfortunately they didn't get to share a drink with their Cardiff foes after the match"

You know exactly wat that statement was implying, not to mention the whining that goes on in the rest of the article.

Hi new here, Im from the old Macquarie Magpies, very interesting conversation on the site good work!

Just thought i'd provide in response to True Blue City pictures taking on recent Grand Final days.

Don't limit the whining to that particular article! There's obviously a lot of intolerant people that don't know how to either accept a different point of view or catch on when some one is having a lend of them. I'm lust interested in footy not sooks!

lordoftheburley who are the macquarie magpies again????

im pretty sure the lake macquaire crows choked in two grades on grand final last year also, or am i mistaken

i dont understand why everyone is sticking up for the umpires as most weeks they r indecisive with there decisions n i still dont beleive they r educated up enough on the rules.i agree with the comment bout not alot of good football brains in the region though which is probably wat effects the standard of footy in the region n also the umpiring

Warners Bay's injury list from the weekend is as follows...
Ryan Sorenson, Scott Bartlem, Nathan Brennan, Daniel Russell, Ben Hunter, Brad Williams, David Kidman, Damien Byrne, Clint Carter, Michael May (playing swans reserve grade), Jake Roach..

All did not play due to injury. All these players are in the Bay's top 22...So that's 11 by my count...No excuses for what happened on the weekend and for the blokes that want to talk rubbish on this forum go ahead...We don't need to explain ourselves to anyone, expecially blokes from Cardiff. it's round 8...You don't win premierships in June...Warners Bay will be right up there when it counts..
Gee theres alot of crap still gettin floated around on here...
Just in reply to the cardiff junk, i seem to remember about this time last year cardiff beating the dogs by 178 pts and then getting beat by them twice later in the year(including the elimination final)... interesting...

Id volunteer a night to come to your training to see what goes on. I've always been fascinated by what an umpire is thinking.

Fair bit of stuff flying around, which is good for a debate I suppose.

My observations of the weekend for what they are worth.

Two good mid season wins by Cardiff and City.

Thats two losses by the Bay to the main protaginists for the cup in the last two weeks, so that will start eating away psychologically at the guys who deep down must be questioning are they actually able to beat them.

Players out.
All clubs I would say have guys out. The top four all had guys missing, like your Krake's, Knight's, White's etc etc, but thats a fact of sport. Usually the best team wins on the day most times, even if the day is a grannie and the replacements have to step up.

Cardiff.
One hand on the trophy even in June, but football has a way of smacking you on the ass when you least expect it. Need proof, look at the premiers of the past in this league (and the two leagues pre merger) Over many years I have seen some red hot favourites fall over grand final day, its happened to both City and Cardiff since the BDAFL has started and I know the clubs concerned have never found a reason depite some serious soul searching.

On the player front, with the amount of quality out there, it is a little lame to even mention it in my opinion. When all these guys mentioned are back, some quality guys will have to be ommitted to fit them in and some guys playing in "their" spots are performing really well at present. Interesting, the only one smiling is the magoos coach.

Umpiring.
On the debate, I saw a couple of lower grade games Saturday and again at Juniors on Sunday. On Saturday in an Under 18's game one umpire (the senior one), absolutely caned one team, as a long term football person it was embarassing, even the supporters of the team benefiting were starting to comment. It was like he was evening the game up whilst the younger umpires whistle wouldn't have had a trace of saliva on it and he wasn't one of the really younger umpires either (who by the way are doing relly well in most cases I think). Maybe his end of the field was incident free? It was like the field had been cut in half, that was when the other umpire wasn't continually over ruling him.

On Sunday, they allow older kids from clubs to Umpire their own clubs games. After viewing this for the last two to three seasons, it 70 to 80% of the time doesn't work. Some kids are too immature to not be biased toward their own club, On the weekend one young Ump was blowing his whistle for a mark before the player (from his own club) even touched the ball (no exaggeration).

Answer - More education.
The young guys should run in Juniors with a senior guy as often as possible and should be properly councelled by them after their performance. This is by their peers and would help them immeasureably.
As for the seniors, rather than put a protective cacoon around themselves, they too should be evaluated and watched and if there are any reports from clubs highlighting concerns, a senior umpire should watch the next few games they umpire and ensure the interpretations are correct.

The umpires are always under the microscope, and always criticised by the losing team, but more help and review can only be a good thing. As for the payment, the seniority and performance standard should be rewarded with higher level of pay.

Guys like Borgy etc who have been around should be payed accordingly, especially if clubs are happy with their performances.

Maybe us critics should get off their computers and have a crack themselves?

Just in reply to all the Warners bay Junk, I've never heard of Cardiff getting beat by over 100 points by any team including Warners bay. Sure you beat that club last year but from what I can see they gave a good contest and didnt just roll over like a bunch of cats. Our old Lake Macquarie magpies team would give the dogs a run for there money the way they are playing. I dont know what anyone else thinks but out of Ryan Sorenson, Scott Bartlem, Nathan Brennan, Daniel Russell, Ben Hunter, Brad Williams, David Kidman, Damien Byrne, Clint Carter, Michael May (playing swans reserve grade), Jake Roach, how many of those players are going to turn around a 120 points??? Sorenson and Hunter May bring the margin down a few points but thats it. Keep hanging onto that hope, next time your gunna get crushed.

Yeah Cardiff had a lot of injuries in that elimination final too and the margin was still only 8 odd points. It is good that you remember those wins last year cause you wont be winning a premiership for a very long long time. And most of those players you beat allready have 4 or 5.

But seriously, God you dribble on. You are more annoying than the Northan Swan, Deitzy, Usingtheforce and Swans Fan.

Would all boring people please exit stage left.

Oh here we go another snapper head from City. If you dont like the forum and what we discuss, then go back to where you came and let the rest of us chat about the issues on here. There are some decent good people for City on here who can hold a conversation. Go and seek out those people and learn how to at least be a normal human being and stop being an oxygen thief.

Its a forum, if you dont like others comments dont come on.

Interestingly most of the names you highlighted are all people that do a bit for footy in the area and dont go on with the interclub crap.

Best we get back to who smokes the most bongs or whether one team drinks with another after games or whether this guy is shit or not, the pressing issues of football.
