Posters calling this trade period a failure and we aren't even half way through are a joke.

Guessing people where thinking 23-27 yo midfielders would be our primary goal and that Shiel would fit the bill perfectly. With chickens already counted with the rumours that we had him, people are suffering from loss avoidance and are upset.

eg Bolton saying "building depth through the club's midfield was "undoubtedly" what the Blues need to strengthen over the off-season" and
"they understand their age profile, but they don't want that held as an excuse at all".

Setterfield and Walsh (if picked) will add depth but aren't the right age profile, its a compromise solution.

McGovern is effectively 66.6% a part of the Bryce Gibbs deal and 33.3% the AFL's priority selection.

We already have O'Brien, Kennedy, DeKoning and Schumacher as a part of the Bryce Gibbs deal.

McGovern was at the start of a new contract.

Adelaide did ok but they haven't robbed us, they just got a little back from the Gibbs trade and gave more.

We have not overpaid. We just gave Adelaide a pick back and another pick we got through the Gibbs trade and a pick the AFL gave us.

Lets not forget they took our future 5th and gave us a future 3rd. So we have no fifth and two third round picks next season. So the Gibbs/McGovern deal is still giving.

We have done very well.
Reid is on SEN and giving us nothing.

Interview full of little digs.
  • McGovern deal was great for us.
  • McAdam is like McGov ready to play straight away.
  • We don't bottom out as we like to stay relevant.

This is a bloke who has copped a shit load of abuse for 2 years and is now desperately looking to get some cred back.

Stay classy Reidy.:D

I keep saying it, what frustrates me the most about the McGovern trade is that we paid overs for him (a forward we don’t really need) when we were determined that we wouldn’t pay overs for Shiel (a mature midfielder who we acknowledged we need this trade period)

How does that freaking make sense?

The difference for me is Shiel overs was pick one, he aint worth a pick one. especially this year.

McG was slight overs and it was two second rounds which are hit and miss to begin with.

I don't think you can say we don't really need a player who is solid already and provides a target to kick goals (which we desperately need) or play link up down the wing to get it to someone who will finish Curnow or McKay.

I don't see the we don't need with McG.

Your right that we need some mids, but to over look every other need because of this is stupid.

McG wanting to come to us was a win, Setters wanting to come to us is a win. Where we are at beggers cant be choosers.

Lol a team with 2 wins and bottom of the ladder saying to a good player wanting to come to us "sorry mate we will be right, we don't need you"

HAHAHAHAHAHA

(Not personal mate but i don't see you point(s) as you may not see mine)

I’m struggling to see the issue with offloading McAdam. If Gary Rohan is only worth pick 40 something I feel these state league picks are further back. I am struggling to come up with 10 decent mature aged recruits without going back as far as Podsiadsly. Having said that, I will admit a small number of players have bobbed up in the last two years and I do think Krueger could be a good get for Geelong- from us- as a 20 yo (?) mobile tall with a history of glandular fever and injury holding him back in draft years. Could be wrong but aren’t these state league picks no more than a restricted early rookie pick? A priority pick would have been much more beneficial to the rebuild of both Carlton and Gold Coast in my view.

Why be so draft heavy focused?

We don't need to be hitting the draft super hard anymore. We need to bring in mature talent as a priority.

Yes we do.

We need to keep drafting young players in the first and second rounds and using our cap space to bring in the senior bodies.

Using two picks in the top 40 isn't hitting the draft hard, but it's still adding quality young players to the list yearly.

I'd still like us to look at Newman from the ducks.

You’d think that Norf can’t keep topping up but #48 from PTA may do it on this.
Edit: forgot about the supposed interest from Sydney in Clarke. Swap there.

Interesting to see what they give up for Hall.
They’re going the lefties path with Polec, Pittard, Tyson, Newman

Have heard sos would trade pick 1 but only willing to trade back to pick 2.

Looking at the two sa clubs move to pick 1 we move to pick two. Gc gets a swag of mid first rounders.

Need the two Adelaide clubs to get into a bidding war.

Could get a pick(s)in the second to pay for setterfield.

I’m sure we could have packaged up a deal with Shiel, setterfield and someone else for our pick 1 and something else.

But it seems we have become a club that is addicted to pick 1, even when it’s a bonus pick that we weren’t expecting at all and only got because of a horror year full of injuries

It's not a bonus pick. We may have expected to finish a little higher but still would have got a top 5 pick.

Also, it's a little vague to suggest we could have packaged up a suite of players and not being able to identify another player, let alone be sure of it and vase your argument on it.

SOS on Trade Radio
- 2nd round picks were always on the table for McG
- Hoping to pick a better player than Shiel next year (using 2019 1st)
- Setters in train
- No interest in Chad Wingard
- Wouldn't imagine anything else, though never say never.
- Ciaran Byrne - Unknown, terribly homesick finds it hard to come back to Aust - looking grim at minute.
- Levi Casboult looks likely to stay
- Fasolo - 3 year deal not true - Know within 48 hours
- Thanked Shiel for calling him personally
- 3 -4 players in mix for pick 1 (chuckling SOS).

Since we’ve traded a future third, can we still trade a future first rounder if we get another first rounder back?

And does that pick have to be received this year or can we get a first rounder from somewhere next year to meet the requirements?

Given Sydney profited nicely from that deal, and they picked up Clarke from North for Pick 69 instead of the rumoured direct swap for Newman...

I wonder if we might be able have generated some good will with the Swans, opening up Newman for Pick 68 and a future swap?

don't tell me dr plow and russell couldn't rebuild him........
Well, tbf to AJ one thing that gives him confidence is that he hasn't actually done his knee that many times. It was an infection that attached to his ACL after his first surgery, constantly had to go back for clean outs. They couldn't get rid of the infection so eventually removed his ACL so it couldn't spread. In his mind he's only done 2 ACL's.

Good luck to him, if he's confident in himself who knows what might happen there

No I see your points.

Which is why as a club that finished with 2 wins because we had a horror injury run this year and gained first pick when we weren’t expecting it, we shouldn’t be so adamant that first pick is vital for us.

Look, as you say, players aren’t screaming out to come to us, especially the top notch players.
Which is all the more reason to overpay for those kinds of players, not middle of the road players that we already have plenty of.

We need to ween ourselves off being so addicted to pick 1 and package up a deal for top notch player, especially a pick that we definitely weren’t expecting to gain this year but for injury crisis.

They were stripped of their picks too. We also got a bunch of priority picks soon after we cheated.

Whilst I agree they were also stripped of draft picks they were still allowed to trade (we weren't), they had the benefit of FA (which we didn't) and were granted a bonus pick after the first round (which we weren't). All we got was Walker and that was only because the AFL overlooked a loophole.

Also the we lost 3 top four picks in running years.

No point re-hashing history but I don't think it should be sugar coated in favour of drug cheats either.
