I don’t really understand the bad will or angst directed at players who negotiate or try to negotiate a better deal when decided whether to come play for us.

Let’s used Eddie Betts as an example. Eddie was offered a big contract from the Crows, he wanted to stay, we had made him an offer (sub standard), Eddie came back to the club and said, if you up the offer by $50,000 (still well short of the Crows), I’ll stay. Club said no, Eddie left and we as supporters still discuss this as being a HUGE mistake today.

Compare this to some comments lately regarding Papley and Ellis, if both had offers from us and then got offered much larger offers elsewhere, whats wrong with going back to the Blues and saying, I want to play for you, but the $$$$ you’re offering is $200-$400,000 less than elsewhere, can you bridge the gap?

The comments, saying, tell them to p**s off and we don’t want you, really show we haven’t learnt our lesson and we are still living in the past when it comes to salary and trying to convince players to join us. We are in a 10 team state, let’s get real.

Depends on the circumstances - the kind of circumstances we as fans probably aren't ever going to be privy to.

If we'd been in talks with a player for months, and had reached a stage where both parties had agreed to terms and just needed to wait til the FA or Trade period to lodge the paperwork, it's poor form for them to come back and try and get more money. At that point in time the club have started making other plans and decisions, changing other offers, based on an understanding of how much money is left.

Different story if negotiations are ongoing. At that point in time, everything should still be on the table and the player and their manager are within their rights to play whatever cards available to try and get the best deal possible.

I don't blame Ellis for taking Gold Coast's offer, it's a bloody good one. I don't blame him for asking the question to see if we could meet partway so he could stay in Melbourne. I don't like the reports that filtered out that we'd left him in the lurch or reneged on an offer - are we reneging on the offer if he's the one who comes back and tries to get us to up an offer that both parties had already agreed to? Seems like he's the one who broke the initial agreement.

Doesn't sound like we've necessarily reached terms with Papley yet.

I think it's more likely Browne just making s**t up or running stories from questionable sources.

Sydney wouldn't be dumb enough to do that imo, it's pointless as it's so easy for us to ask Tom's agent or Tom directly if it's true and find out it's not.
Sydney are typically pretty professional when it comes to trading.

Having worked in pro sports for years these things happen all of the time and not many insiders bat an eyelid. In the NBA, for example, most teams leak trade discussions that are dead ro their beat writers. Same thing is happening here. It may not be the team but it will be someone connected to it.

Teams and their key personnel control the narrative. It often comes at the writer's reputation (eg Tom's dad going off on Twitter). Funny how the Swans had two pieces of news come out at the same time involving one of their players and their primary target.

Look at the Lions, had players walking out the door left and right while their management was terrible then they got things together off field, drafted better and are reaping the benefits.

The Lions also got a priority pick in 2016 (admittedly not pick 1).

Yes, Brisbane's off-field turnaround (David Noble appointment?) was the defining factor. But the priority pick didn't hurt.

In fact if you follow the pick through some twists and turns it basically got them Charlie Cameron for free.....

I don’t personally know a single Carlton supporter who will be more likely to attend a game or buy a Membership if Eddie is on our list next year.

I personally know MEB_

My son, who is now 8, isn’t old enough to have seen Eddie play and remember it but his special teddy bear that he got when he’s was born is named after Eddie. He knows who Eddie Betts is and knows that he plays for the crows now. He’ll be so happy if it happens.
I’m sure there’s more people with similar stories.

Baby Meddy's Eddie the Teddy.

I love it!

Completely agree, my comment was in response to the Suns facing insurmountable challenges of player flight.

Sorry, are you saying Couch and 4

I'd take B Couch and 4 for Lukosius.

Luko will go next year anyway.
I think BCFC sees the writing on the wall - that there’s little to no chance that Lukosius is going to extend his contract and that because he is such a good player they should demand a lot for him. I think Crouch plus Pick 4 is fair since Port can’t probably match it.

I think you're all barking mad if you think the AFL (let alone GC) is going to trade out a player with his ceiling and his leadership chops. Goes completely contrary to what they want to accomplish up there.

If he leaves, it will be because he's refused more money than a third year player has ever received in their lives merely to go to Adelaide.

Lukosius is not the best kick in the AFL.

Elite for his height but not the best.
... in his first season.

Has the capacity to be the best kick in the comp, and that is if he isn't already in the top 10 for it anyway. Anyway, semantics.

Crippa would have to be worth over a mil a year to some oppo clubs but I still can’t see him leaving if the opportunity came...there is something you get that is far more valuable when you build it yourself. He is well on his way to building something great with us and I’m sure Papler, martey and Butlin can see this clearly.

Just interested to see what you guys say. When both of them are out of the AFL, who do you think would have had a better career? Cripps or Walsh?

It does make it look better though.

i.e. A gap from 1 to 6 is huge at the draft. From 4 to 9 is less a distance.....and then let's say from 30 - 35 is relatively insignificant. 65 - 70? Not worth talking about really, is it?

It's only a seemingly small difference but it could be huge in terms of getting what you want.

I think the GC PP makes our Adelaide swap appear better. But SOSforPM still has a solid point.

Yes, 4-9 is less of a downgrade than 1-6, BUT putting bragging rights aside, you'd rather have 6 than 9.

The trade deal with Adelaide is done. We are not getting our first rounder back. With that in mind, we should prefer to hold pick 8 vs pick 9.
