Cameron (Gold Coast list manager) just said they also wanted our future second.

Yep, just watched that, basically thanks to the AFL handing them a swag of picks Suns were of the opinion they would just hold us over a barrel as they had nothing to lose.

Ok, rant engaged.

Guys, what the **** do you want SOS to do when the Swans straight up say "We won't trade Papley", and the Suns for whatever reason decided to play hardball? Would you rather SOS pay 2 firsts for Papley? Would you rather give up a first for Jack Martin, who may or may not be any good?

I can understand being upset and disappointed, but ignore the media, this is far from a disaster. We offered what we thought was fair, and their respective clubs said no. Would you rather we go back to the days of trading pick 7 for Kristian Jaksch and Mark Whiley?

Some people in here aren't seeing the bigger picture and it frustrates me. We're not in the window next year, so it's not the end of the world if we didn't get some of our targets. We have a young exciting list that are growing together, isn't that exciting? Isn't that enough to look forward to for next year?

Anyway rant over. Reading through this thread will be very informative to know who's opinion I should listen to and who's to ignore going forward.

No its really not club has stated its intentions to go after mature ready made players using early draft picks and was one of the reasons we did the Stocker trade last year .
Has deliberately been stingy on player contracts money wise for a few years now therefore banking a warchest to spend on bigger named players .
Have now missed Coniglio Papley and possibly Martin .
Maybe even Wines
Also suspect this could be the last year we can bank salary cap money so we may have just pi**ed 1mill+ up against a wall .
This is a massive fail imo .
Mate, Sydney didn't want to trade a contracted player. Nothing we could do.

I think the most disappointing thing is a lack of plan B. We clearly rightly or wrongly thought we would get our men and now the time has come and gone and SOS has egg on his face.
I agree with not overpaying but you can’t claim to be one of the major players and walk away with a 32 yr old small forward and a backup ruck.
For all the potshots thrown st kildas way the last couple of weeks, they identified targets and got the job done. You have to think in the future players will think twice about publicly nominating the blues as we showed no propensity to actually getting them across the line.
Not the end of the world but it’s about as poor a trade period as we could’ve had

My issue is that they realised early Papley will be too hard, so why not target someone else?

Why not look at Bonar? Why not target Butler as another option?

We have to question the stratergy. The plan was going to draft for 3 years and then go down the trade path. Miss out on Coniglio, went hard for a player with 4 year contract and took a real risk at picking up Martin.

We downgraded our backup ruckman.

I don't call this an overreaction... whether it's the startergy, the players we targetted or not having any backups, we failed miserable this trade period

So the Suns wanted pick 9 and a future second for Jack Martin and pick 15... No ******* way he is worth that.

Y'all need to chill out, he is not worth that. If he comes in the PSD good, if not at least we didn't over pay.
Incorrect. The Suns wanted pick 9 and we would get Martin and 15. Sounds reasonable to me

Who is acting? I couldn't care less.

Papley was not worth #9. Martin was not worth a first rounder. End of story really.

We had fair values in mind and we stuck to them. Everyone talks about how SOS doesn't blink. He didn't.

This is about the club, not people getting their temporary high through trade entertainment.
Two players nominated Carlton, it reflects poorly on the club not getting it done. This 100% about the club.

Well that was anticlimactic. So much for things definitely happening. I don’t think Martin comes via either draft either. Silvagni gets a fail this trade season that’s for sure. Some gaps in the team not addressed. Just goes to show folks don’t put all your faith in sneaky leakers.
Sadly have to agree. We’ve had months to work these deals out not just the ten days of trade period. We’ll the be the laughing stock of the comp for the next few days. Just don’t seem to be a club that can do a deal in a very straightforward manner.
So disappointing.

Not all doom and gloom
Bennell is looking at two melbourne clubs next week.
Carlton is on of them.

Maybe Eddie can keep him under control.
Like he was boss with three Amigos.
Still may get Martin.
SOS has always busted his guts for Blues.
Never know whats around the corner, might work out for the better.
I know the trade team had a red hot go. Thats all you can ask.
please let it be true

Wines approaches the club via his management about a trade. We tell him we “thanks but no thanks” we don’t have the currency to trade for you because we’ve made two players publicly nominate us and we need the picks for those deals.

We fail to get either deal done AND we forgoe getting Wines who IMHO would have improved us no end.

Now wines has been burnt.

Papley has been burnt

Martin probably burnt.

If SOS wasn’t best mates with our President I’d suggest he’d be out the door.

Really bad look on the club. I don’t buy the whole “sos stood firm and didn’t bend over” rubbish.

If you have a need, you get it done . Look at west coast, look at Geelong.

Yep, just watched that, basically thanks to the AFL handing them a swag of picks Suns were of the opinion they would just hold us over a barrel as they had nothing to lose.

Yeah ****ing AFL.

GC had so many picks they probably felt they could 'afford' to make a stand on Martin and take the risk of losing him for nothing. They got so many free picks anyway.

Martin & 15 for 9 & our 2020 2nd rounder is a ****ing outrageous request.

Best offer for Daniher was 9 and a Future First according to the *'s list manager (He who shall not be named)

Difference is Tim Kelly, for some reason, was dead against Freo, making WC the only option...

Papley quite clearly had a 'preference' for us but is just desperate to get back to Vic - has 9 other choices

How do you know this as fact...you have contact with Papley....stop assuming that what the media writes is fact.

Long time
First time
I suspect the clubs (particularly * & the bears) putting the foot down will ultimately have consequences as how the AFLPA will approach the next CBA, and discussions as to the AFL's backing (ownership) of expansion clubs.
As for our club, we will simply grow with that which we have - a cohort of highly talented, focused players.
Time to direct our righteous fury onto the field.

Where did I say that?

You have a young gun who fills a need wanting to come and you blow it.

You can keep saying every year is a learning year for as long as you want but at some stage this football club needs to pull itself off the top of the ladder.

Today is another day where we’re all being laughed at.
Definitely laughing at you
