And for FREE.

SOS you genius! Kept our # 9 and will still land all targets bar one - the impossible Paps thanks to Doddy (we’ll get him next year anyway when Swans are ready to let him go).

Genius?

It's no guarantee that Martin will be at Carlton.

We failed for the second consecutive year to land an A or B grade player.

We take pick 9 into a very average draft - the whole reason we put it on the table because it didn't satisfy a need.

This is another failed trade period plain and simple.

Pick trades can continue up to and on draft night. Wouldn't be surprised if we traded 9 to strengthen our position with draft picks for next year so we can go hard with trades next year (and hopefully a big fish free agent).

Two players nominated Carlton, it reflects poorly on the club not getting it done. This 100% about the club.

This is 100% about the Swans and Suns. Swans never wanted to lose Papley and decided the only way it would happen was if they got Daniher through the door. How is it Carlton's fault if they wouldn't deal?

Should we have given them 2 first rounders? What about Pick 9 and Cripps? Just keep throwing in stuff as long as we get the deal done?

People need to take a deep breath, consider what the players were worth and how far they would have gone in the same situation?

Wines approaches the club via his management about a trade. We tell him we “thanks but no thanks” we don’t have the currency to trade for you because we’ve made two players publicly nominate us and we need the picks for those deals.

We fail to get either deal done AND we forgoe getting Wines who IMHO would have improved us no end.

Now wines has been burnt.

Papley has been burnt

Martin probably burnt.

If SOS wasn’t best mates with our President I’d suggest he’d be out the door.

Really bad look on the club. I don’t buy the whole “sos stood firm and didn’t bend over” rubbish.

If you have a need, you get it done . Look at west coast, look at Geelong.

Agree. It's such a bad look for the club when a player nominates (which suggests we have effectively promised) but can't get a deal done in the end. Lot's of sugar coating in here but that's just not professional.

Our strategy was to go to draft for three years and then recruit ready-made players so our plan falls back a year now. Not only did we miss out on Papley, but there was also Shiel and Cogs. It's a definite disaster for the list management team. We don't need pick #9 with the way our list is sitting.

Time to invest on some people who can actually negotiate, these guys are sh*t it. They might know who they want but hand over the actual negotiation to professionals!!!! I was so hopeful and presumed that we could manoeuvre our way around it. Somehow the bayside bogans managed to scoop the pool and we get Eddie for a year, a third rate ruck that is WORSE than the bloke he replaced for nose bleed picks. I’m stunned! Angry!
Hahahaha

Papley
Martin
Coniglio
Shiel

Carlton cannot secure its targets; not entirely the fault of the club, but it indicates a change of thinking is required. If Brad Hill (a better player than Martin and Papley) can reach his preferred destination, then Carlton should be able to achieve the same outcomes.

The AFL Suns are a disgrace of an organisation and the anti Carlton bias at the AFL is immense. The same AFL that gave Geelong a 1st Rd pick for Steve Motlop free agency to on trade to the Suns, the Ablett deal over the line. With all the concessions they’ve received for their own ineptitude, a gentlemen’s agreement should have been struck to see a deal done. Bugger Jack Martin now; let him stay at the Suns, and they can have an unhappy player at their ramshackle club. Craig Cameron is a knob, I can tell you all.

its clear Carlton needs to be offering north of $1mil a season to land an elite talent for next year now.

Also suggest splitting Pick 9 for two top 20 picks, draft a midfielder and a small forward. Trade next years 1st for a 1st this year; 3 talents through the door. Build the depth of the club; the Achilles heal during the Ratten era. I just hope Sam Docherty can return; you have to be realistic but if he could get close to his best; then that’s a top new recruit in effect.

Finally, Silvagni’s cycle at the club has run its course. He hasn’t performed badly, but it’s clear to enter a new phase, change is needed; just like McKay and Bolton.

This trade period was a joke, we did not fill any of our positional needs, we had good players wanting to come to us and we couldn’t get it done! Can’t see Papley nominating us in 12 months time, personally a player of his calibre for pick 9 was worth it, overs maybe but considering he still has 4 years remaining on his contract, it was what we had to pay and it should hve been done.

No plan B. Not even a plan A-

Every other club involved in the trade period out performed us.

The mental gymnastics by some trying to turn this into a positive is insane.
Yep, absolutely no way to spin this as a positive. We had tunnel vision and couldn't get it done.

As soon as Sydney started to **** us around we should hve been throwing everything at Wines. Also should have nabbed Bonar at the price they got for them and should have been involved with other trades. Useless trade period.

Wow the melts and sooks on here are unbelievable.

#1 How were we meant to get Paps if he WASNT AVAILABLE? Sydney would only trade him if they got Daniher. Be mad at Dodo not SOS. Are the sooks suggesting SOS should have made * trade Daniher somehow? FFS

#2 Why pay overs for Martin? 9 for Martin and 15 isnt a good deal considering we can still get him for free (Possibly) AND still have pick 9 in the draft.

People need to chill out, all this talk about SOS has to go is laughable. Unless you think SOS somehow was able to make * and Sydney do the Daniher trade so we could get Paps, then you need your head read.

It is guaranteed. We have third pick in PSD and will simply frontload his contract to make him too expensive for GC or Melbourne. Plus it’s doubtful they would grab a player that doesn’t want to play at their club even if they had room in salary cap.
