Bluemour Melting Pot XXI - Like seriously, the polar ice caps have got nothing on us

Sell it whichever way you choose but for two players to ask to nominate Carlton and not get there, doesn't make for a good look.
If you think it does, tell me how.

It's not about melts but reality. We did not pull off the trades we told prospective players we would do so.

Mate they are already calling us the new Fremantle on the radio, the team that chases targets and fails, no matter how you twist it this is not good for the CFC, we where on a steady rise in public perception, on and off field, and this has knocked us hard. While it is far from the end of the world it is a very bad result for the footy club, and the recruiting team as a whole will have to answer to the board who will not be happy with how this has played out.

Is it a good result? No.

But could we have done much more? Also no.

Sydney refused to trade papley.
GC were asking for a ridiculous price for Martin.

If we bent over and paid way overs we would have also been criticised, just for a different reason.

If Gold Coast redraft him, he would become the highest paid player at the Gold Coast for one year, then become a restricted free agent at the end of the year. The plan would be to put $1million plus on his head, moving him out of Melbourne's reach. Draft him at #3 in the PSD then renegotiate his contract for multiple years, which would reduce the actual money paid, but the million would still count on next year's cap, where we have the space due to paying under the cap for a number of seasons. Hope that made sense.

They won’t redraft him. They will loose him for nothing.

Yep exactly, but apparently not being glowing about this result is melts.

We got Butler down and gave him a tour. On day one of trade period. SOS says we aren't interested. 20 minutes later Agresta says we're very interested. Seriously confusing mixed messages. No wonder Butler choose the Saints.

Posted pretty much this at the same time, Butler would've fitted a need at a cheap cost.

As it stands GC would need to use a top 20 pick to claim Martin in the draft as they don't have a pick between then and us at 43. Put a high price on him, maybe trade up to somewhere in the 20s, we are still a good chance to get him.

Can't see they would use any pick of value as it effectively doubles his cost (the pick used and the pick/s foregone) and they still end up with a disinterested player on their hands. The other 16 clubs though, who knows...

PSD is a more manageable affair...pretty sure recruiting a player back to the same club against his will is unprecedented. Then just the Melbourne hurdle to get over...hopefully their TTP is tight with Langdon and Tomlinson.

Sadly have to agree. We’ve had months to work these deals out not just the ten days of trade period. We’ll the be the laughing stock of the comp for the next few days. Just don’t seem to be a club that can do a deal in a very straightforward manner.
So disappointing.
We look awfully slow on the field with the list. Quick teams will shred us next year but I have faith Teague can put some things in order to improve our W/L ratio to a respectable level.
Perhaps there’s a mature ager worth taking a punt on for some forward line defensive pressure and goalkicking ability.

People baulked at paying Cogs a million plus, but are fine with overpaying for Martin in the PSD, which we don't even know will happen, delusional.

An offer of 2 x first round picks was rejected by the Dons - injury has limited daniher to 11 games in 2 years. Dons were asking too much

I thought Adrian Dodoro said that pick 5 wasn't tabled for Daniher in his press conference on Fox.

What a ridiculous statement! SOS can have all the best intensions in the world but if others don’t come to the party he cannot do anything about it. Pay overs and it reduces our options in the future. It is not as if we have the worst list in the competition. Yes, our performance this year wasn’t great but we have lots of promising players that will be a year older and a year better. Very few have reached their peak yet.
And who are you?

Essendon and Sydney both being ridiculous. You can't blame us for that.

Daniher is a key forward who can play, they don't come cheap, yes he's been injured but he's also contracted and they are dealing with Essendon who have a reputation.

Sydney not putting pick 5 up. Are they serious? Essendon are always going to say no.

Sounds like we were relying on getting Papley based on Sydney and Essendon getting a deal done.

Sydney's offer clearly never going to get that deal done. Essendon greatly overrating Daniher's value.

GCS being unreasonable in the Martin deal, think they can redraft him or whatever. They will lose him for nothing.

Can't blame us for that. They only small forwards worth chasing. Butler maybe but it looks like we genuinely felt we would get those deals done and the stupidity between Sydney and Essendon cost us.

We will have to make up for it in the draft and next year.

Frustrating but that's the way it goes. Lack of quality small forwards available probably didn't help our cause but we go to the draft with a good pick and still have the resources to get Martin so let's see.

Serious question; how do we get Martin now? There's no PSD, so it's just the ND. We have picks 9, 43, 57, 70 and 85 (at the moment). Clearly we won't be using 9, so how do we get him at 43? Or am I missing something? Do we just offer him a year at $2,000,000 to put everyone else off and after that year redraft him on the cheap?

Have heard PSD is still a thing, set for November 28.

We overpay for 1 year it's like front loading the contract, we renegotiate the next 3 for lesser money.

I’m disappointed but not surprised at the Papley outcome. It appeared clear that Syd tied the Paps outcome to the JD situation, and predictable that they would be unlikely to shaft Essendon. As for Martin, what an irresponsible play by GCS.

doesn't matter to them since they are brimming with picks thanks to the afl.

Oh but they were as gain OK with giving their cross town rivals a good deal...but not with us.

Free hit if it works out. Just desserts for the Suns.

Guys we have been the victims of two absolutely delusional list managers here.

Cameron wanting Future 2nd + 9 for Martin + 15.
Dodoro wanting MORE than 9 + 5 for Daniher.

This screwed up both our deals.

Real question is how we ended up with tunnel vision for 2 deals which were both ultimately untenable.
