Can any St Kilda fans tell me why he has averaged a lot less possessions in 2018/19 compared to his 21-23 a game in 2016/17

Not 100% sure on this, but I believe they tweaked his role from a traditional winger to more of an attacking wing/HFF.

Which is weird, considering Saints already had 187,245 small forwards/HFFs who don't really run through the middle that well.

well sorry to spoil the fun but we are here for a very important reason...to make carlton great again. need to be objective on all facets of the clubs interests. we brought in countless number of players over the last few years that were shown to be not worth the effort.

Can still be open-minded AG.

Wonder how many Brisbane fans cherry-picked some stats and pointed to Jarryd Lyons' occasional omission from the senior side and subsequent delisting from the god-awful Suns as evidence that he was a useless pick-up who wouldn't help them improve.

Just relax and show a bit of faith. Not every player we pick up will come good, even the best clubs have misses. But there are plenty of examples of maligned players who show their worth at a second or even third club. Better we as fans allow these players time and opportunity to show some worth at our club before we start laying the boot in about what they didn't do well at their last club.

What was changed in the Richmond philosophy a couple of years back? Went from focusing on what players couldn't do and therefore needed to improve at, to what players did well and could offer the team. Newnes runs hard all day, gets into good attacking positions, and comfortably slots goals from long range. So if we can use him in that role, instead of expecting him to be elite at all aspects of the game, then we have a valuable contributor on our hands.

I assumed it was a role change. He will fit into a wing role beautifully at Carlton.

Excited about Newnes to be honest.
Think he’s exactly the type we need linking up on the wings. How many times over the recent years have players like Newnes torn us a new one by gut running us off our legs between the arcs? Plenty from memory. Could be a solid player in the Newman mould. At the least he makes LOB and Fisher earn a spot and that’s only a good thing. Add Martin to that outside mix and suddenly the team has a much more damaging look with more competition for spots. Really like this one and I dare suggest if fit will start round 1.

Newnes and Martin are more developed AFL standard players - which will help put pressure on the younger recruit to actually lift their performances. This is exactly how DFA (and trading) should be used. Criticism of DFA listings in the past - increased resources and more focus in this area is welcome.

Newnes to Carlton huh. I remember when we used to do this to the Saints in the 80's.

This is a reverse Spiro, a reverse Michael Jezz even.

Meh, it is what it is...added squad depth. If he's playing seniors though, then quite a few "hoped for's" aint measuring up. Nothin personal, but i hope i'm not seeing too much of Jack next year in the One's.

Newnes would not nominate unless we've already ticked him off. So he's on our list.

We will get Martin.

Do we add another to meet needs? Christensen. Gray. Keays..

Do we rookie others to meet needs at a very low cost? Bennell. Murray..

I say yes...add mature talent and go to the draft with picks 9 & 43. We have enough young talent to develop. Mature bodies are what we need now. Particularly as the quality seems slightly higher this year.

And we are paying nothing for them..

Two valid points.

1) He fits a need (more midfield support; LOB, Setters are still developing as wingers)

2) DFAs can be cut from their team for a handfulof reasons
  • Simply not good enough or past it at AFL level
  • Decent players but ageing (eg Matty Wright)
  • Decent footballers, but not stars and just fall out of favour or don't fit their current team's list profile
  • Injuries/off-field issues
2a) I genuinely think Newnes is in the decent footballer category. I've written a few times that he is high-quality for a DFA. I am not suggesting he is a star AFL player - but he is probably about as good as you're going to get for a DFA. Roughly speaking, he's in the same ballpark as someone like Ricky Henderson who was a solid foot soldier at Adelaide, but was picked up by the Hawks as a DFA and has given them good service since (he'd be one of the best DFA success stories).

If you can pick up a guy for free and he gives you neat 18-20 touches (and half a goal) a game off a wing, it's a good pickup IMO.
If Suns and Cochroach weren't such c*****, then they'd do the right thing by Martin and do the same thing STK have done here.
I am comfortable putting the trust in Playfair and Teague on this one.

Henry would have worked closely with him in 2018-19 while David spent a year at the Saints in 2014 between stints at WC and Adel.

They would have an intimate knowledge of what Jack is like.

Welcome to the best club in the world mate - good luck.
Great quality character - was in the Saints LG until 2019. New environment and coach could make him a big surprise packet. Seems like a good trainer and another mature head to keep the kids on the straight and narrow.

On-field, he'll add another option outside to LOB and Walshy, while Jack (Martin) adds to a quartet of solid outside players who can all run and link up between the arcs. Martin and Newnes will also improve our midfield goals, too seeing as both are capable of kicking a snag from outside 50. LOB showed that he could develop this in time with confidence and Sammy... well, he can do anything.

Excited about Newnes to be honest.

Yep, another name to throw into the Consensus 22 mix, ay CJMB ?

I'd be happy if we brought in another of Bundy, Sam Gray for depth (both have talent and experience and need a seachange) and have already been clear on my interest in the Bennell/Murray risk. Maybe not both of the latter, but both could thrive in a new, positive environment.

Pretty sure Newnes had a 2-year offer in front of him, and judging by the media release and video on the Saints website, he made the call to delist himself.

He's been played out of position and definitely a whipping boy. You'd have to ask a reliable and objective Saints supporter on the reason he's decreased in production the last few years, but pre-2018 his star was on the rise and was very important to their side, which was far better than ours (performance wise at least). Has leadership and experience and is still young; is versatile; and costs nothing but a list spot.

I'm all for it. Welcome aboard, Jack.
Agree Matty, but where ya going to find a reliable and objective St Kilda supporter?

So Saints offered a 2 year contract which Newnes rejected because he was looking for a fresh start. Saints agree to delist him to make it easier for him to get to Carlton ...

... over to you GC.
Yep, that's how it's done GC.

I've popped over to the Saints board to get some feedback on Newnes.

Will post here once I get some responses.

A couple of them prefer Deluca over Newnes?

Wut.

Don't trust GC one iota at the moment and any potential deal that may involve them either delisting Martin or letting him slide to us in the PSD I would tread cautiously with.

Much rather we just stand firm with our pick 9 (or trade it to someone else) and hope that Martin slips to us somehow.

Keep playing that game of poker SOS.

Same.
Take pick 9 to the draft, and go again next year in the trade period.
I'm still confident Papley will want to come to Carlton next year.

We should look at Keays who the lions just delisted. Kicked 47 goals in the neafl playing as a small forward who started his career as a midfielder so he can go between both.

I'd have a look at him as well. Certainly thought he was a good prospect as a junior

Newnes played pretty much every match from his 2nd season, including about 120 in a row. He was dropped late this year and has fallen out of favour.

From a Saints mate "Very handy player. Clean skills but impact on game dropped over the past two years".

My understanding is that he is very outside, is a neat winger. Was being played a bit more as high HFF last couple of years.

He's not a player you build your team around, but good enough to get games if used properly (wing/HBF).

With the Saints bringing in a heap of players - especially an elite winger in Hill - Newnes finds himself surplus to needs. Saints probably see Newnes as an easy way to shed say $400K from the salary cap without a major impact.

I think he is a decent footballer and will get games. Newnes could be the new Newman.

This is where I would play him as well.
