I don’t 100% disagree with you, but the reason the saints won last week I strongly believe is due to Ryder walking all over English. Grundy has had a fairly ordinary year as well which I think has left the pies reeling as much as Howe going down. I think even early days the games we won this year there is a fair correlation to how well Pittonet played. Again not 100% disagreeing but I think a gun ruck can go a long way to helping a midfield.

Even Ryder is that type where he can rest/push forward.

Grundy seems like he could spend more time forward and maybe that's what the Pies should try next year. Or target another KPD and use Roughead in a Stanley role

Pitto did well against non jumping opponents but struggled with the athletic types

What’s Grundy’s contract status? I read something during the year and honestly I wouldn’t at all be surprised if he walked away from football. He has multiple outside interests and maybe COVID has shown him, footy ain’t the be all and end all. He hasn’t been the same gun player this year.

I was once a bodyguard for Humphrey. He can't see down from the costume and they think it's a bad look if he skittles kids on the way up and back from the stage. Kids get manic as well - some kid yelled at me "Your not the boss of me" as I asked him to move out of the way. Was a while ago so it might have been the young Dodoro.
I like Humphrey, neither of us wear pants in public.

Signed a 7 year deal at the start of the year.

first i saw of him. was also impressed. would be very happy if we could acquire a player like that. not a big name but an honest worker.

He was almost BOG in one of their games earlier in the season too.

Marchbank doesn't have much currency. He is a very talented player who can't stay on the park. His worth to us in a trade is not great. If we can get his body right, he will be very good as a third tall defender.

Weitering and Jones can certainly take a grab but they are required to mind the opposition's key talls. Plowman is not as good a mark as Marchy and while his judgment is good, Marchbank's positioning for marking is superior. Not sure why we are looking at Gov to be that replacement either. He is not his brother.

Saad and Marchbank are different types of players so Saad's durability in comparison doesn't really factor in.

Where are our back up defenders if any of the talls go down? Macreadie and ...?

Interesting that our McGovern was invariably rated the better footballer - and mark - as they rolled through the junior footy ranks in the west.

Our McGovern's issues are between his ears.

Get that right and the criticisms will disappear.

Teauge and McGov adore each other.

I feel like Teauge has this utopian gamestyle of fast break footy which I'm unsure will hold up in finals.

But with Williams and Saad adding some line breaking speed, I think it will give that game style the best chance and when the ball is pinging around quickly, McGovern's value will be maximized.

Yet another season, where a so call elite ruckman won't win a flag

Give me a ruck/forward or one that pushes forward, any day of the week

Looking at you TDK

Now, I want another

That’s a liittttlllleeee bit of a stretch. The two beat ruckmen haven’t won but then four teams left in it all play a classic ruck rather than a hybrid.

Nankervis, Lycett, Stanley, McInherny.

While i tend to agree you don’t need an “elite” ruckman to win flags, it doesn’t mean the Pies went out because they had one.

Any team would kill to have Grundy, you just wouldnt trade for him.

On Lycett, speaking to a former coach of his (at junior level) the quote was roughly “best hands below his knees for a big bloke I’ve ever seen”. He’s not far off being as good as it gets as far as ruckman go, but I still agree with the bowman in regards to “elite” ruckman being an unnecessary piece of the puzzle.

Pitt is solid, TDK has versatility. TBH, I’d rather just play TDK and get Charlie (taboo I know) or Harry to chop out occasionally. Injuries to rucks (in the contest) seem to be diminishing as they focus their intensity on around the ground efforts rather than the centre tap outs.

Rucks are overrated.

Centre bounces are overrated.

i.e. there’s not many of them when teams are winning with 6 goals...........

Yes.

Grundy has won them plenty of games and you need to win games to get in the finals.

Love to have him.

Any chance our ITK posters Include ruckman in their “midfielder” classification?

Not saying you wouldn't have a ruckman like Grundy or Gawn, all I have stated is no elite ruckman will win a flag this year and has been that way for well over 10 years

Give me a ruck/forward rather than a pure ruckman

Wouldn’t give a packet of chips for jdg. I guess the airwaves have to be filled with something. Hype over substance.

We should sign Dane Beams then trade him back to the Pies for:
  • De Goey
  • Crisp
  • Greenwood

Nah his issues are genuinely getting over injury. That back injury he sustained has severely limited him. He's lost quickness, agility and his leap. Should be back come next season.

Also fix our entries inside 50, which have been woeful of late and aren’t helping anyone.

Wouldn’t hurt to have some basic structure up forward too, not having Levi go for the same ball as everyone else and suck as many defenders into the contest as possible...

I think he will be ok next year also if he is injury free.

Does this mean we need to try and use Harry as the 2nd Ruck for 5 mins a qtr?
Then we can play Charlie, Harry and Gov as the 3 tall fwds.

.. and that might be affecting his confidence.

He dropped so many marks he’d have normally have swallowed. One game was everywhere for a while, dropped 3 sitters in a row and disappeared for the game.
