Do it now to push for a flag...we can see with our list profile we're in good shape for sustained success with most of our talent between 20-26.

Tigers finished outside the 8, then brought in Nankervis/Prestia/Caddy and won a premiership - all were important in achieving that.
Lions got Cameron & Neale before they made finals but they were on the rise like us...after bringing them in and with natural improvement they finished top 2 in 2019 & 2020.

Agreed.

Remind me to make the sarcasm more evident.

It’s a no brainer

Yes, some people on here are definitely saying we'll finish top 4 if we recruit Wines. Refer to the example above.

Nobody is saying we'll finish top 4 on the back of adding Wines alone.

And I'm not sure one example does much to prove whatever point you're trying to make.

Given what we know about how teams were to perform this season, 6-1 was a realistic proposition for Port.

Given what we know now a Grand Final appearance was realistic for Geelong. See what silly lengths we can go to with that sort of thinking?

Nobody would have had Port starting 6-1.

Geelong and Richmond are proven performers. It's no coincidence that they've ended up in the position they are in today. Port had a good year based on favourable circumstances. They'll decline next year. You just wait and see.

They probably will decline. How many teams have finished top of the ladder in consecutive seasons in recent times?

Port didn't have favorable circumstances, that was already knocked on it's head earlier.

No need to worry about who might take we’re not using 7 in the draft. Will be used for trades.

This draft seems to have gone from a very weak draft only a month ago to every player in the 1st round is a cant-miss prospect now that pick 7 is all but out the door.

You ask those same people who are saying that what they really mean.

You're not factoring in internal development, a healthy and firing Patrick Cripps, the return of Chalrie Curnow, Marchbank, etc.

Wines alone may not put us into the top four. But add all of those factors into it and those posters may deduce that "with the addition of Wines on top of the other factors then Wines can put us into the top four."

It's things that aren't needed to be said to get the understanding of what they're saying.

There are always misses, aren't there?
Here's a count of Top 20 selected players no longer on lists over a five year period; 2010 - 2014

2010 - 7
2011 - 5
2012 - 7
2013 - 5
2014 - 5

Let's say that you can expect at least 25% not to show up anything much at all.

What if the club were of the opinion Merrett was getable next year as a RFA and that by acquiring Wines we would be using up all our salary cap space thereby shutting our door to future big name acquisitions. The opportunity cost of acquiring Wines is another A grader that becomes available next year that fits our needs better. Supporters here are of the mistaken belief we must finalise all our big names acquisitions this trading period as if we would be threatening for the flag in 2021.

Yep. The draft is such a crapshoot and it will just be harder to draft in a year where there was no football played in Victoria.

It will be and some may be seen to have been geniuses when they pluck a star out of seemingly nowhere.
I've had this discussion elsewhere and the first few players selected will likely be quality, but that's not the point as much as it is for the relative quality that will have missed for not seeing others.

There are always players whose stocks rise significantly in their last year. We just don't know for sure who those players may have been though.

Interesting comparison, they are very different players imo I’d be rapt if he ends up projecting as good as his brother, 2kings would be crazy good...
Yeah different players one forward one back, very similar in the eye catching way they move with ball in hand
Geelong got a bargain (was hoping we would take him)

was just watching the SANFL half time break and the kid that won goal of the year who plays for the Eagles, Sodas said Carlton are into him watch this space. Small forward - stats for year in the pic. Interesting, anyone know any more on this? Has supposedly lit it up in his first year but I admittedly don’t watch much SANFLView attachment 988801
Looks more than 71kg.
Might need a smaller jersey.
