Also fix our entries inside 50, which have been woeful of late and aren’t helping anyone.

Wouldn’t hurt to have some basic structure up forward too, not having Levi go for the same ball as everyone else and suck as many defenders into the contest as possible...
If I am playing alongside Levi, I have to think more and know he can get to the contests and not get in his way. There will be plenty of crumbs whether I am a McGovern or a Betts or Gibbons. Team structure is about the word team and playing to the strengths. I fear at times some of our stuff ups are about trying too hard in the wrong moment and in the wrong way. The word poise cannot be overstated.

Not saying you wouldn't have a ruckman like Grundy or Gawn, all I have stated is no elite ruckman will win a flag this year and has been that way for well over 10 years

Give me a ruck/forward rather than a pure ruckman
Spot on, bring back the John Nicholls-Percy Jones combo.

I like the way Sam Simpson goes about it. I wouldn't mind trading for him, perhaps with Parfitt in a package.
Not denying his quality, however I am not going to judge any Geelong player from last night's game. They all looked like superstars. I mean Hendo looked like SOS.

All their players were superb.

Bews caught my eye especially

Well, Levi is a serial offender. I couldn’t count the amount of times Harry has a bit of an advantage, say parked in the pocket with his opposite man, then Levi comes in from the side, defenders in tow, and makes an absolute mess of the situation.

Also couldn’t count the amount of times Gov is leading into space and the ball goes way over his head (probably to a horrible contest like above) or one of our classic slow, s***, shallow entries out near the boundary, or the ball heads in his direction but the kick is too low and gets intercepted by an opposition sweeping across the 50m line 10m in front of him.

Once we get some more pace into the middle and can get better users of the ball kicking inside 50, not relying on the Curnow dump kick around the body or expecting Cripps to hit someone lace out every time, then we should start seeing big improvement from all our forwards.

I’m pretty bullish on the combination of Charlie FF, Harry CHF, Mitch 3rd tall (moving between the pocket, HHF and getting up towards the wing for transition ball) with Martin and Fisher as flankers/mid-fwds and whoever is playing small forward crumbing (Betts, Murphy, Honey, Cuningham, Owies, traded or drafted player). I really like the balance of that.

Gov definitely needs to work on his efforts and staying in the game, hopefully he can get over the back/ankle issues that have plagued him the past 2 years... but holy f*** do we make it hard for our forwards.

Plus a few years of the Carlton respects program and growth in female membership down the drain. Steep price to pay for maybe 4 great games a year.

4 great games a year is accurate. Not worth the big contract.

Some people who don't watch Collingwood every week but see the headlines and highlights of his great games probably have an inflated impression of him...since they don't see all the poor games he has in between.

Yeah babay!

He ain’t no hack.

can’t wait till that live wire, medium forward with sticky hands returns.

He reminds me of Aaron Hamill, just jumps and glides through the air.

I’d we could get the best out of him he’d be huge for us, I reckon we will.

What I want from the JDG situation is this:

- we definitely try to get him and make him an offer, one that we can afford and would force Collingwood hands. However we give JDG a deadline to make up his mind.

- Pies either increase their offer so much that it leaves them in a bad spot re the cap or they simply don't and we trade for him.

I don't want a Shiel situation where we put our eggs in that basket only to fall a bit late.

No argument from me. But when its well known Levi will always do that there is no excuse for not adjusting. Harrys time will come.
I tend to think Charlie likes to run too much to be a FF though.
How does Harry adjust to that? Not go for the ball or just try and keep at least 30m away from Levi at all times?

Charlie can run all day but I think he’s most dangerous playing out of the square. He can still use his aerobic ability from there, leading out and really working his opponent over.

I don't think De Goey's worth more than $650k given his inconsistency. He can win games off his own boot but there's plenty of games inbetween where he doesn't have much impact. And he doesn't bring any other benefits like 'leadership'.
His inconsistency looks like it is purely preparation based. Last night he just looked unfit. Its a big gamble taking a guy that has talent but not the commitment. As he gets older his body won't cope with it and soft tissue issues will start kicking in.

Yep, I really like that forward balance too. I'm a big fan of Cuners across half forward also.

If Gov can get fit/form, he could be a big ace for us moving towards 17 but at the moment has been disappointing.

In regards to Levi, it was really noticeable towards the end of the season when he was struggling a bit. I can understand his form had dropped and was just trying to pull in a big mark to get some confidence back. It was frustrating to watch though.

Focusing on the footy side of things, JDG strikes me as the kind of player who plays really well in contract years but then coasts when contracted.

There's been quite a few reports in the past of him not being ultra professional and coming back from pre-season out of shape etc...and he's had some huge games this year, but I reckon his 2019 (contracted) was only OK and the last time he had a really good year was when he was last OOC.

I worry that if we give him a long 4-5 year deal to pry him out of Collingwood that he'll coast given his security and not be the star we hope for.

Agree. Not worth the acquisition, focus elsewhere on more highly motivated and consistent players. We don't need another (albeit more far more talented) McGovern.

Listening to Buckley presser, de goey not going anywhere. Just need to agree on Monterey value. For sure he is playing us to get his value up at pies

Monterey value and all that jazz...

Not saying its easy But Levi has to play at this stage and that means a lot of discipline around who goes and who doesnt. I back Levis hands in at this stage and kicking is about even.

So Charlie in a Dunstall type FF role? Maybe, but has Charlie got that level of concentration and judgement?

I can't remember a player that I would less like to see in our jumper that JDG.

Off field issues aside why do we need to pay top dollar and through the nose trades for a player who, IMO, plays far too few good games?

Like Stringer before him the media have elevated him to a status that he falls a long way short of.

JDG looked checked out last night. If the money is right and he’s invested, I think he’ll come. The issue is doing the trade.

Was camping with the family and my ten year old little man was bit by a horse. It just reached out and clamped down on his shoulder and flung him sideways.
Little man was pretty upset and was screaming “it bites harder than a ****ing T-Rex”.
So that’s a NO to DeGoey.

Massive if true, I disagree with anyone who says he isn't worth at least $800k. You put him in a Forward line with two other highly talented talls (Curnow / McKay) and a mismatch is bound to be created. De Goey is already a huge mismatch for most mid-size defenders as he is incredibly strong overhead, he's also very agile and can pick it up off of his toes which makes him a headache for talls.

You add that to a forward line like ours and it means that either De Goey, Curnow or McKay ends up with the 3rd best defender, either way - that's a problem for opposition teams. De Goey can also come into the middle / up the ground.
Carlton 09 said big players are interested in coming to us.
Then he named JDG as being one of those....

He may well be using the club to drive up his price. He may actually want to come.
Club will do it's homework no doubt, and weigh things up.
Pretty sure the club would understand pos and neg of impact.
It's an A ..B plus mid we need most of all though.
Any chance we can wait and see?

The whole Collingwood team looked tired and checked out last night.

Can’t fault his effort though - was still the Pies 3rd biggest possession winner despite spending half the game deep forward.

We would no doubt be having some robust discussions with him about his fitness and where he sees himself playing/what his ideal role is. Still looks too puffy.

Love the way he hunts the ball though. Clean hands, agile. It’d be incredible seeing him play as an inside mid for entire season, if his fitness ever permits.
