6, 7, 8 and Caldwell is perfect start to rebuilds. If sos in 2015 we would be on the moon.

Yes but drafting elite young talent is Dodo's Achilles Heel. Remember his haul of Parish and Francis in the 2013 draft?

The only top/first round selection he has not fluffed in the last 8 or 9 yeats was McGrath (and even then, I would still pick McLuggage or Taranto over him)

But yes Dodoro wins trade week again (and Essendon will still go another 365 days without winning a final :) )

CARLTON

Who left:
Nobody

Who arrived: Zac Williams (GWS Giants, free agent), Lachie Fogarty (Geelong Cats, trade), Adam Saad (Essendon, trade)

Draft picks owned: 38, 48, 78

Leigh Montagna says: “They’ve got the players they wanted - it shows they’re in it for the now. I’m still a bit iffy about their strategy. I think they need more young talent - when you look at besides Sam Walsh, I’m not sure if they’ve got enough young talent. To be a top four team, you need a combination of your draft picks and topping up. They’ve topped up really well but I don’t know if they’ve gotten enough out of their draft picks.”

Grade: B

Umm what?

He doesn't know who they are

Extended fire sale for the pies

Adam Treloar thought he was part of Franco Cozzo's grand sale, grand sale, grand sale now that he's gone to Footscray

I lived on Sydney Rd for 2 years. Walked past the Brunswick store multiple days a week. Don't think I ever saw a customer in the store, and the amount of dust on some of the surfaces was "surprising for an operating retail store.....

In hindsight I think we did as well as possible for this trade period.

We all came into the trade period thinking it would be simple, split 8 into 2 late 1st rd selections then trade 1 for Saad and keep/trade the other. Our likely trade partners would be Geelong and Brisbane. Looking back either trade probably was never a possibility as Geelong ended up sending all 3 1st rd picks to the Giants for Jezza and Lions wanted out of this year's draft, sending their 2 picks to Melbourne for a 2021 R1 pick. Option 2 was to try and get a 2nd rd pick back. We could have pushed harder here but they were clearly bookmarked for other trades. The PSD was a threat we would never actually be able to use considering our position and Saads quality so a 3rd rd coming back was as good as we could get in the end.

That said I would still put us 4th overall for the trade period, behind only the WB and (clear winners due to the Filths incompetence managing the TPP), st Kilda for getting Higgins and Crouch on the cheap and Geelong who win of they win a GF in the next 2 years, but are likely screwed for years if they done.

We got x2 A graders and a small pressure forward/ midfielder who, if he comes on, elevates our position to #2 behind the WB. Sure we had to give up our 1st rd pick in a heavily compromised draft however we already have enough speculative kids developing and we really needed to address weaknesses in the side (lack of speed and skill of the hbf/through the midfield) while maintaining our draft position for next year, after which we will have a better idea of where our developing kids are and what we need to target to complete the side.

And that’s the thing, some Carlton supporters just assume that Nick Austin folded because he didn’t make the trade on the final day on the trade period. In the end, he was having discussions with Dodo every day and Austin didn’t want * to do something scummy like pick up Saad in the PSD and that wouldn’t have been a threat coming from *, they actually would have been that pathetic to do it. It wasn’t a case of Austin just giving up, it was a case of not wanting to lose Saad.

We know what we have in Saad and we know he will be a very good player over the course of his Carlton contract. * on the other hand are going to be selecting a teenager they haven’t watched for 14+ months, in a draft that might not have been that good to begin with. At least it wasn’t a future first round pick going *’s way.

For what it's worth, and I'm nowhere near an ITK, but I was told by someone who has regular conversations with a high-level list official from another club, that "they've never forgiven Treloar for his last few minutes of the 2018 GF". I don't know what that really means, cos you can't see much from the TV coverage, but I guess it was a lack of chasing/effort at such a crucial stage of the match.

Seems odd that they subsequently extended his contract though, so maybe it's a bit hyperbole on the part of a rival club.

Of course his "other" business made all the $$$ for him, until the boys in blue got wise to what he was doing........... o_O .

Probably in the minority, but I don't think this trade will help the Dogs. You can only have so many midfielders before you have to play some out of position, and they were already doing that.

This also gives more time to guys like Daicos to spend more time in the middle, and I think he'll be a better player than Treloar.

I definitely don’t subscribe to the idea that it’s a disaster. However, they lost required players and before last season thought they were closer to a flag than a rebuild. Bringing in 3 kids in the same draft will take 4-5 years to pay off (if it ever does), at which point Sheil and Heppell are 33.

Caldwell is promising but still an unknown.

Further, good luck convincing other players to come across after they left Dunkley hanging in the breeze.

So we can get Dunkley next year. He’ll know that the deal will get done

Since Austin folded was my only comment on the trade I feel I might have gone a tad early I was under the impression we were getting a second back
But on reflection and with the help of more logical less emotional supporters than I
I now have a more balanced view and think we will win the flag next year with Saad and Williams in the team😀
In all honesty a few have encapsulated the trade in a way that gives me more confidence in our recruiting team

I don't get why they went after Caldwell either. They have so many of these smaller midfield types.
They've lost run off HB, even though they've added Hind from the Saints. They need a younger key back, and I hope they're not pinning their hopes on Wright.

I hope they are (pinning their hopes on Wright) ;)

To be fair, the quality of some of those names is very much questionable if you take off the blue blinkers.

C'mon then - put your mouth where your mouth is.

Philp, Kemp, Honey, Ramsay, Stocker - all largely untested.

The Tigers would have taken Philp if we hadn't. kemp was a potential #1 pre ACL.

Dow and O'Brien - I guess we've these two off covered off during trade period.

Setters - would get a game in most 22s.

SPS and Cuners - both arguable played out of position, both inconsistent (Cuners more so). SPS would get a game in most 22s. Maybe not all.

Cuners needs to extract a digit or three.

TDK - the best emerging ruck in the AFL arguably.

Weiters - should have been AA ahead of Moore.

Walsh - no need for comment.

Willo - still a maybe, promising signs he's over his back issues....touch wood.

Fish - good player, maybe better than 'good'.
