Essendon went into 2015 (a year with a strong first round) with picks 5 & 6.

They picked up Darcy Parish (solid citizen) and Aaron Francis (jury is out).

Not too stressed about them having 6, 7, 8 in a year when the draft is more crapshoot than usual.

They stuffed that up royally didn't they?

As long as they don't get their filthy hands on Will Philips, I'm cool.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

The actual saying is 'the grass is always greener on the other side' These things start being used wrongly at some point and the more people use the incorrect version the more people think it's right.

It's like the predominantly wrongly quoted 'the proof is in the pudding' which if you actually think about it makes no sense, the correct saying is 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating'.

Like "blood is thicker than water". Means the opposite of what most people seem to think.

Comes from "blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb", meaning your word is stronger than family ties.

I've seen other sides of fences just raw dirt...or yellow weeds....even puddles and gorse

and eaten some ordinary puddings...................... :D

I hate pudding but every time that someone speaks of pudding this comes to mind;

"Wrong, Do it again!"
"If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you
have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
"You! Yes, you behind the bikesheds, stand still laddy!"

Be mindful that the last 10 premierships have been decided by a team with a forward (or a potential champion forward playing the game of their career)

2011 - Geelong - Hawkins
2012 - Sydney - Adam Goodes
2013-15 - Hawthorn - Buddy Franklin / Jarryd Roughead
2016 - Western Bulldogs - Tom Boyd
2017 - Richmond - Jack Riewoldt
2018 - West Coast - Josh Kennedy
2019-20 - Richmond - Tom Lynch / Jack Riewoldt

Why you'd stiff Harry is beyond me.

With Curnow's future in significant doubt (even if he comes back to whatever 100% will be for him) you don't want to flog off your potential champion forward.

Harry will get what he's worth.

Who said anything about stiffing Harry? I specifically said you pay him what he is worth taking in to account your salary cap and list management strategies. You dont pay Harry a million $$$ or or overpay him simply because another club has offered him this. Thats how you wreck your salary cap and list management structure.

My point being is, you dont pay Harry more $$$ just because another club offer 'X' amount. You pay Harry what your club can reasonably afford taking in to account your salary cap and list management objectives. You simply shouldnt give him more than what he is worth just because another club offers a stupid number. If your player, in this case harry, doesnt like that, then you move him for two firsts as i suggested. Over paying players due to outside pressures and influences is how clubs fu** up their salary caps in the first place.

Agree.

If a club splurges valuable $ overpaying certain players then the team as a whole gets weaker, becomes less competitive. eg GWS

Then players want to leave to go to a club with better prospects eg Cameron, Williams with more to follow.

Where do they go? Clubs that don’t overpay individuals hence have a deep and competitive list eg Geelong.

We have to maintain salary discipline or the whole list will fall apart relatively quickly.

I don’t give a sh*t.
It’s a ******* number.

If we retired numbers 2, 11, 25 (et al) should be buried dropped to the bottom of . Marianas Trench and never see daylight.

Yeah I dont really get this thing at all with numbers. Seems silly. If Saad wants 6 and its available, give it to him. If Fogarty wants 8 and its available, give it to him.

Geelong's players started taking less than market value in an effort to keep the team together after they had won 2 or 3 premierships.
It wasn't the club deciding not to overpay anyone, it was the players agreeing to re-sign for unders compared to what they'd get elsewhere.

The market sets his value so I'm not sure what you're trying to argue.

Sorry to be a cold spoon here, but dodo no longer the recruiter, he has someone else do that job to his list manager (I believe).

Dow played better and more consistent football over the first 18 months of his career than Fogarty has done to date.

It's amazing the lengths some people will go to to talk down our young talent. Especially when it is simply not correct.

I guess Fog is the shiny new toy so people haven't had a chance to turn on him yet.

What's that saying about the grass not always being greener on the other side?

But it can be.

I wouldn't worry about Harry too much, I think he'll re-sign and his contract will be nowhere near a million dollars a year, not many players get paid that much, in fact, I'd say we don't have one on our books. Cripps may come close with this current deal he will sign.

Back to Harry, he's shown nowhere near enough to be a million-dollar player at this point in time,. This contract won't be the big one for him in any case, that will come in two or three years' time if he earns it by then.

The Dogs will have to select as many players as they use for matching a bid, I’m not sure they will be wanting to trade down again since it would mean they will have to draft an extra player.
They changed that rule this year, you don't need to select as many players as picks used for matching any more

Correct, glad you nipped it in the butt. However, let's not make him the escape goat, because for all intensive purposes, he'll cop his just deserves.
