We have got Andrew Russell who is meant to be one of the best going around. We should be looking at players with injury history and seeing what ARussell thinks. Hawks took Burgoyne with bad knees and he is close to 400 games now.
If we could get Trelore for $600-650k(pre covid adjustment) via pies paying $200-$250k and him taking a small($50k) haircut just to get out
And ARuss gives it the green light we would be mad not too look at it.

Right now everyone sees what he can’t do. Not a great kick, hamstrings are a worry, got massive $$$ owing.
But what can he do?
Chop out Cripps massively, get the ball moving forward. If we get a chaos ball going into the 50 is it that bad while Harry and Charlie are roaming around?

I think he could make a real difference, if we could get him on the right money

Exactly.

And no one can play the we don't have the money card (at $600-$650k a year) as we would have paid Oliver a lot more than that!

These Collingwood and Essendone list messes are a remimnder of how important it is to not 'reach' for a flag - Norfs are now iin full disaster rebuild mode because they tried the top up routine and kept older players on the list for too long - similarly Geelong whilst looking more succesful havent pulled a flag out of their getting older every year side and Hawforn's top up with FA because destination is looking pearshped as well - Sydney are in rebuild mode...

We've got a bunch of developing mids and Williams/Saad are handy pickups - I wouldn't go near Treloar - very good player but getting on now and COllingwood are saying all that needs to be said about him - and Stephenson yeah nahhh - never understood the Beams reach - buit that was Buckley and Ed thinking they were contenders - and a flag was there I guess.

Worst thing we can do is double up on teh Geelong type reject by buying trouble off Collingwood's books.

Dodoro is struggling - he will continue to make media noise as if they are a lifejacket in srtormy seas.

Hold firm - we will be dancing on the graves of a few of these competitor lists sooner than we think.
Nice post JaB.

Would you do something like this?

2020
Pick 8 --> Pick 18 + 19
Pick 18 --> Saad (goes to the PSD if not)
Pick 30 (+ Future 4th if needed) --> Mid/Small forward (e.g. Stephenson, Lonie, Higgins, Sexton)
Pick 19 (+ Pick 18 if Saad goes to the draft) --> Trade for a future pick? Looks like it will be a super-draft, or we can use it to target someone else.
Take our 2x 3rd rounders and our 4th to the draft - happy days and a great trade period

2021
Merrett --> Free Agent - If they match the offer, 1st rounder + Future fist should do it

Thoughts?

Left field thought...but what Coll should is auction off Trelor.

- State they will accept a second round pick.
- Identify the 3 or 4 Vic clubs that may have some interest and who he’s happy to go to.
- Get them all in a room
- Coll state their reserve to an independent party
- Start auction at say 400k/year contract offer for 5 years. See’s who still keen and who drops out.
- Then move to $450k/year and so on, until there’s only 1 party left.
- if that final offer is below Coll’s reserve then that party has 1st rights to negotiate with Coll on a middle ground
- if Coll accept the offer then they contribute the difference.
E.g WB offer 650k/year then Coll pay $250k/year
- Otherwise he remains at Coll and their Salary cap remains screwed.

Will sort things out pretty quickly. Could even televise...imagine the TV rights.

Can't help but laugh a little, last year we had a plethora of ITK rumors and we berated most of them for either being wrong or farcical and this year the club is evidently more tight lipped and our ITK are probably a little more hesitant to share what they know at this stage and we are all crying poor. Lose lose for everyone haha

BF I genuinely feel sorry for Trealor but you’re right...I hope nobody bails the dirty bastards out...they don’t deserve it and more to the point, any players wanting to go there in the future take note how they treat loyalty!!
Quite frankly they are a bunch of frauds.

Spot on. He's done everything he can for them, was willing to re-negotiate his terms to help them out and now they want to boot him out even reported that they told him they don't want him and that he's hard to coach at times.

What a circus.

Far out Essendon eat up their media mafia and Dodo’s trade antics.

This has the potential to finally fall in on him though and is pretty interesting.

First the reluctance to trade Daniher and getting bailed out by the AFL to help one of its non AFL market teams.

Secondly asking a substantial price for an out of contract Saad that dosen’t want to be there.

Thirdly asking a substantial price for a contacted injury prone Fantasia thats wanted out for ages and has now stated that he won’t be returning to the club no matter what.

While also wanting to obtain and out of contract Caldwell that GWS don’t want to lose and a contracted Dunkley.

If he can pull this off in all honesty we’ll done to him and I’ll prob go over there and give credit. Let’s hope that clubs have finally had enough and hold firm though.

Let’s say Carlton hold out and are dead set about walking Saad to the national draft if terms aren’t in our favour, Port see through the threat and offer peanuts for Fantasia, the AFL steps in for one of it’s expansion market teams as they have done time and time again and they just don’t have the assets for Dunkley.

I’m all for holding out to the last day now and seeing how intense the pressure builds. What have we got to lose? We all ready have Williams for free and our team is going to be better...roll the dice and see what happens. Worst case we pay 8 for Saad best case the world falls in on Dodoro and we can see what happens draft night, options may present themselves...a team may have a player that they desperately want on draft night and pay overs to move up to 8 if not just select Saad.

Really interesting stuff and could lead to the justification of the Essendon love on the other end of the scale it could be the second extinction on the dodo bird or most likely something in between. Should make a thread about it.

What would worry you about getting a future first back??
Not what I meant.
I mean Port will not offer better than a second for Fantasia. Dodo knows this but is demanding a first to drag it out, then when little to no time is left will accept and say "here Carlton, best we can do is 8 for Saad and a secondrounder ". We have a worse hand and no time to act on other trade targets.
I say **** him, we showed the player and other managers we gave ample time and opportunities, now we play hardball and dictate terms.
Split for 2 late firsts, one for Saad which they can drag out and begrudgingly accept at the last minute, the other we use in the meantime while we still have time to get things done, if so possible.

Saad will still end up here under fair terms, and we still give ourselves a chance at doing what needs to be done for Carlton.

Of course no one can make Treloar do that, but really, why would he want to stay at the Pies after they've violated him with numerous sharp objects?

Does he want to keep playing AFL senior footy? Does he want of a chance to win a flag?

If both answers are yes, here are our terms Adam.....
But that implies he wouldn’t be playing senior football at Collingwood. If he doesn’t move they aren’t going to have him rotting in the reserves.

They want him gone for financial reasons only, if the finances stop another club from taking him he starts in the middle for Collingwood round 1 next year.

I dreamt last night that Oliver had genuinely bought into what Carlton was building and was willing to take unders in term of salary.

My footy dreams have come true before. Still waiting on the one where I kick the winning goal in a Carlton premiership, though...
I had a dream that we won by a point a week before the '99 Prelim, woke up and told my partner about it, so she was gobsmacked a week later...

I
j dog said he was worried about getting ports future first back from * for 8 in the saad trade. Not sure why that would be a worry??
Don't believe Port will give more than 28, and I think Dodo knows this and will use it against us, like how he is telling other clubs he will out-do any pick swap we suggest

I agree.

Be interesting to know how Russell is used at Carlton (for recruiting decisions) versus Hawthorn.

From the outside it looked like his opinion was taken very seriously at the Hawks but probably still a case of the recruiting team putting names in front of him.

There's a fair chance he already knows what Treloars problems are and how serious and he also probably know what the Collingwood medical set up was like and if it wasn't up to scratch.

Hasn't their last few years had some of the worst soft tissue stats in the comp?

Agreed.
If he played 15+ games a year and finals I would say the return outweighs the cost.
Would play very hard for the jumper.

Ok fair enough.

I think the threat of us splitting ( won't happen) is to get more change from * so a second coming back is probably what we want IMO.

I probably have been a bit ambitious in the past in terms of my thinking of what we can achieve this trade period. I think the following is something we can all agree we would want to happen.

2020
Pick 8 --> Saad + Pick 48 (Just want to get this trade over with and move onto other targets - I don't think we would be paying overs)
Pick 30 (+ Future 4th if needed) --> Mid/Small forward (e.g. Stephenson, Lonie, Higgins, Sexton)
Pick 48 + 51 + 87 --> Take to the draft

2021
Merrett --> Free Agent - If they match the offer, 1st rounder + Future fist should do it

Thoughts?
Do you want your working wage at half the price just because you want to get paid?

Saying 8 just because you want to get the trade done is crazy

I don't think * will split. Why would they dilute their 7, just to get our 8, especially when dogs want future picks?

No doubt in my mind that we do the pick split and have 18 or 19 on the table for Saad.
Dodo has about 5 deals he needs to get done, and probably relies on what he's getting from thus. He will sweat and accept 18 or 19. Maybe chuck in a 3rd/4th last minute to sweeten.

Saad is going. He knows this. He either cashes in or he goes. If it comes to the national draft, Essendon won't waste a top 10 pick on a 26 year old that doesn't want to be there. I doubt many other clubs either consider it for the same reasons. Ball got through to 30. Saad could slip to 18. Maybe we even do a draft day deal to move up higher to be sure.
National draft is the better option, but if it comes down to PSD, Trade radio were saying that a player has never not gotten to the club they want. A medical is a big thing list managers need to tick off, and they won't risk the huge contract on his head if he refuses to do a medical there.

If all that fails, It will be disappointing, but I don't think we miss out on much. Newman will essentially play his role. Obviously Saad is better but I don't think its a huge difference. Newman was fantastic in 2019. Furthermore we keep the late first (which in a lottery draft such as this could pick a very talented player) and save the cap space (front load Cripps/Mckay and have an extra 650x5 to spend next year). Saad won't make or break season 2021. Essendon have way more to lose.
