I don’t even think Hawthorn would be an issue as I don’t see them drafting a player that doesn’t want to play for them. This might be one of those rare years where we can walk a player like Cerra to the ND and not be in any danger of anyone drafting him. Collingwood and North are selecting Daicos and Horne-Francis, Gold Coast and Adelaide wont draft a player from Fremantle who wants to come to Victoria and Hawthorn won’t draft a 22 year old (in a week) who doesn’t want to play for them.

Bur none of this will matter as clubs rarely walk a player to the draft. Not a good look.

Or we could just trade with Fremantle in good faith and arrive at a fair and reasonable deal without all the dicking around?

Too much Michael Gibbons about him - in a good and bad way. 179cm midfielder who is a crash and bash ballwinner, but who doesn't really hit the scoreboard and whose disposal is fine (but not good). At AFL level the bigger and quicker bodies mean he's not going to cut it as a center square guy, in the same way you can't play Gibbons in the middle vs Bontempelli/Macrae/Dunkley when we play the Bulldogs, and he doesn't have another role that suits.

Good second tier players, unfortunately the AFL is just a level above where they can have an impact.
I guess you’re right. I do know that all 18 clubs have contacted him in the past but obviously no one has picked him up. Must be for that reason.

can't quite go with this, Newnes filled a valuable role this year and last.
a team without a realistic sustainable gameplan required the power of work he did, stuff that doesn't translate terribly well to tv coverage.

the question is at what point does a solid everyman player become a list clogger?
respect your view that it's now, just disagree that we necessarily have the players pushing him out right now.

hopefully by the middle of the year it's a different story.
I kind of agree but in a stronger team he's no where near best 22. I'd rather keep playing Dow or LOB and get games into them whilst we are no a contender. You don't improve your list keeping your recruits in the seconds and playing 2nd chance players who haven't made the most of their 2nd chance.
He did play a few good games towards the end of the season when we were under review, but IMO he's done nothing to enhance our side.

6 is a great deal for Cerra. I can’t believe some here think otherwise. We would’ve been stoked to have him at 3 in 2017.

I suspect it’ll be 6 + F2 and some later fluff going either way.

Proven quality with scope for improvement >> players who may be quality in 2025.
This is just wrong and we have our past trading to back it up

Mcgovern was not worth the 1st round pick Adelaide got from us

Martin was not worth the 1st rounder GC wanted.

Saad was not worth pick 8 to us last year.

Your recruiting department needs the sack if they can't get a Cerra lvl player with pick 6, he wouldn't be in the top 50 mids in the comp.

Not true - Melbourne were blessed on the injury front this year and guys like Melksham and Hunt still played a number of games. Newnes is the definition of a role player and would've most definitely had played if he was on their list.
Melsham and Hunt would eat Newnes for breakfast.

what, poor defensively and gives up once the ball is past him.
Hmm and in what way different to Cripps, Docherty, Dow, Fisher, Williams, SPS, O'Brien, Saad....My thumb's getting tired so I'll stop. I am seeing a pattern here. We have a lazy conditional culture that has permeated this playing group. Newnes albeit lacks the class of many of the above is far less a culprit of what you accuse him of than most.

Yes, but we would still have No.6.
But can the Hawks afford him?
I would rather get a very good young player for next to nothing than paying too much for Cerra on 700K?
I doubt we will be playing in the finals next year.
We have over paid for Williams and McGovern.
We also have Cripps for the next 6 years on big money.
Which idiot signed him up for that?
Hawks have plenty…
Shouldn’t happen anyway, get a trade done fairly for both camps…
No one has to come out of it beating their chests declaring a landslide victory…

Didn’t give up a first for Gov.

Didn’t give up a first for Martin.

Agree on Saad.

We may well get a Cerra level player by 2025. Or we could get one now.

He’s in the top 50 mids and improving year on year.

Easy decision.

Martin was definately worth a 1st rounder. Saad we had to pay overs for because the club went public too early before we got a chance to split our pick.

Gave nothing up for Martin.

Got him in the PSD.

Was kind of my first thought when I read BrownDog comment. Describes a large chunk of our list.

Ok, let’s look at it…

5 cases that you’ve provided of players being walked to the PSD since Nick Stevens was taken by us there in 2003

From 2003 to 2020 there have been a total of 471 trades made in the AFL

So out of a total of 476 instances, 5 of those have ended in the PSD scenario. 1 in 95.2

I don’t know about you but if I were given a horse to back and was told it won once in every hundred or so cracks, I wouldn’t think it was a very likely outcome…

If I was any good at computers, I would have made a fancy movie style poster, I’m not pushing to send anyone to the draft, more than happy to pay a fair price.

Your whole reply to me was 5 names who had previously been walked to the PSD though, no mention of your opinion

If you’d given even an inkling that these were your actual thoughts, I wouldn’t have felt the need to reply as I feel the same way

You mentioned PSD the movie, coming to a screen near you, I listed the stars of the movie. My post was a reply, to a post that was tongue in cheek, I thought my reply was in line, with what I replied to.

There's everything wrong with 'depth' guys like Newnes. He is bog standard and barely makes 22. Our list should be made up of players that are challenging to break into the 22 week in week out. That is real depth. Not someone who can make up the numbers in a pinch. That's why we are where we are.

Not sure why we go straight from "fringe" to "shouldn't be on the list" here though.

Guys like Newnes, even if they're not best 22, are good to have as depth or to keep the LOB's of the squad honest. You don't want 15 Newnes', but outside the best 22 there is always going to be a combination of developing kids, solid journeymen and injured starters.

I'm not a massive fan of LOB but he is light years ahead of a more skilled player than Newnes. There is no upside to Newnes. His best is fringe in a below average side.
what about the idea a player performs better in a stronger side? grigg, melksham, lambert, robinson........

Would love to see how they're going to get that done. Isn't Daicos going to put them into negative for next year?

LOL, TBH, my use of 'makes up the numbers in a Pinch' is a bit of a 'Kane Cornes-ism' as he probably played 20-odd games for the year.
But I put this down to poor selection. Maybe LOB wasn't up to it (and I am not his biggest fan) but for a pick #10 or whatever you'd think the club would get more games into him, rather than leave him in the 2's for 4 years.
