Bolts to pies as coaching director. Interesting. Also Leppa.
Could this be the new model? ie having a relatively flat management team up top with a newbie coach supported by 2 ex senior coaches for support?

You have to give Collingwood credit. One bottom-two finish might have been a fluke, but they are putting everything in place for a sustained run at them. Starting with a couple of new appointments with demonstrated track records...

A Real possibility that our next coach will be a rookie coach. If Kingsley is presenting now it if so for Head Coach role. IMO that all but rules out Clarkson. Reason? If Clarkson had the job, we would not be wasting everyones time going through the process. People may say that he has not made up his mind yet and that we are running the process just in case. I doubt it. If he has not made up his mind now then we all know it not happening.
We might be interviewing rookie coaches to assess their suitability to work with Director of Coaches like Clarko or Pyke. This arrangement would be okay with me. Save soft cap damage and Clarko wouldn't have to back away from his original statement, because he won't be coaching next year.

not sure why, but this feels appropriate .....

There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from Old Regret had got away,
And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
Had mustered at the homestead overnight,
For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.

Agree with point 1, disagree with 2.

I think any time you're not in full rebuild mode, finals needs to be the goal/expectation.
Consultancy culture deems a leader moulds outcomes to an idealised set of review points. Sporting and entrepreneurial culture deems the leader's training and experience is used to iterate, plan on the run and adapt to circumstance. This is Sayer's first shot at operating in a sporting business culture. Heading an accounting or consultancy firm is like being a highly paid umpire.

This has not been a great start by Sayers in terms of delivering the mission statement. As a leader you never corner yourself. You leave every possibility open. And you never let the outside world know your ambitions.

  • Rather than saying we are looking for an experienced coach. You say we will appoint the best coach & coaching group that will enable our young talented group to excel to their best of their potential. Why bloody say what type of coach you're looking for.
  • At his press conference he mentioned that we expect to play finals next year. This again was bloody stupid. What he should have said is we will provide this group with the best people around them in terms of game awareness, development, recovery, inspiration. If we do this, we know the sky is the limit. Let the processes unfold in their own time without the unnecessary outside disturbances.
Regarding point one he actually did say what you said he should.

Don't agree at all though I get why your saying it.
Why not say it if thats the aim. Its an aspiration to look for an experienced coach but not something set in cement. Anyone must realise that.

On finals....Why have a review and then let everyone off the hook saying its ok we arent good enough. Every club should expect to make finals before a new season. Why have a club otherwise.

Listen to Greg Williams. He says the same things.

Next year this team could be good enough to make finals/top 4/Premiership?. Focus should always be on best practices in the here & now. The rest will take care of itself. You never place any boundaries. Saying you want to make finals is a boundary.

My assumption has been that if Clarko is keen, we would sign him ASAP and abandon the process. The more days pass make it feel less likely that he is keen (at least for me).

But what if we are actually doing proper due diligence? We run an extensive process to consider all available candidates of interest. Clarko would have a very light version of the process presumably. Then all candidates are compared. The best is then appointed - almost certainly Clarko but who knows.

That process would impress me and signal a different Carlton in many ways. Perception wise, it would also be quite powerful.

Do I actually think that is happening? Probably not. But the dream remains alive.....

Strongly disagree. As a leader you set specific goals.

"As I said last year, the foundations have been laid as a club over a period of time now. I stand by that. Our expectations are a lot higher. We don't want to just play finals. We want to play significant finals and win significant finals.

"I sit here with great empathy for our footy club and our supporters, it's been a long time … 1964.

If I was the coaching selection panel..I would push Clarkson harder than anybody. I would say, I dont care about your past...convince me of your future. Show me why we should hire you. The younger untried applicants will always be raring to go.

No offence was taken by me - and I simply (and possibly too quickly) found a Gervais quote and typed away.

You make good points, and it probably shouldn’t be you and me aiming to resolve the perceptions of Carlton at the moment. That we are discussing this says something in itself, I guess.

My question was to ask, whether it’s possible that things are actually in hand - as I’m lead to believe.

It definitely appears not at present, but we have to wait until all roles are filled to assess that.

It’s a fair view not to care about other clubs, which I gave as examples, and I think it’s fair that I don’t think media perceptions matter either - the process is publicly unclear but internally, it may be fine.

All good and as you say it may be all under some control, I'm just having some difficulty in seeing it as it applies specifically to Clarkson. Don't want to think we are just getting stuffed around by him and I would prefer to see us move on with the coaching interviews.

There is some evidence of this but I don't think the spectre of Clarko in the background is contributing much. If he wants the job he should have let us know by now.

Not having a great day so far (hardly had any sleep with a flaring and agonizing tooth ache last night ugh) so this Kemp news is absolutely put a smile on my dial.

The kid from Echuca is seriously talented!!
