Just wait for this board to erupt like Krakatoa when we beat Richmond in round one.

Might need to hire a new fleet of trains for the Voss the Boss Bandwagon express.

Haven't felt this excited or optimistic about this club in years (and I tend to be a glass half empty type of person)

I have such an enthusiastic buzz about our footy club right now, no amount of grizzling or nitpicking on this thread or board can change that

Its a very strange feeling, feeling optimism and hope after so long, I wish I could bottle it.

My great grandfather and my grandfather came from the goldfields and settled down the road from the Sarah Sands pub. They followed the noisy Carlton fans to Princess Park. My grandfather took my father to the ground who then toon me then I have taken my kids and my grandkids. What an exciting footballing history/ dynasty. Building for the next lot of faithful Blues!!!

There’s old money and then there’s people like you good sir - Gold Money

We better beat Richmond who could quite easily finish bottom 6 next season.

We will need to beat actual top 6 teams to get us all excited

Also it’s Vosswagen - get on board

Cerra and Hewett are going to have such significant impact on our midfield, esp listening the load on the likes of Cripps, Walsh and Ed in the midfield, I expect even more growth and development in Dow, TDK and esp Kemp (whom imho has as much upside and talent as any young player in the game) and touchwood, if Charlie Curnow is finally blessed by the footy gods and can stay injury free for most of 2022

Having a fresh new coach with no real burden of pressure or being sacked helps too.

There is actual tangible and real substance to our hopes and expectations of our team in 2022.

We need to have finally a good run of injuries and we will will give the 8 a fair old shake.

And of course, have to wish Docherty and what he and his partner are going through the best of luck and success of all.

I am all for listening the load mate, I don't think that will help our midfield though.

Really - I'm backing on pick 25 to have a better debut season than Mark Dwyer and Frank Marchesani combined.
Marchesani had a great debut season, it just wasn't with Carlton.

I think we'll start slowly and come home at the back end of the season. So I'm not optimistic about beating Richmond Rd 1. The way I see it, we'll have a new game plan and it will take time to get used to it and the new players. Richmond, fresh off a longer than usual layoff will be primed for Rd 1 even though they admit they try not to peak too early. They'll have a point to prove against a very media-hyped Carlton, trying to ensure they still maintain they are a flag threat.

I'm hoping for a new approach
Go hard in every game - but, especially early - the first month normally kills us and we have to play catch up all season.
  • Lose to Richmond - and the excuse is they are a strong finals side
  • Lose to the Pies - they are a likely final side
Rather than excuses when we lose, I want to hear - watch out for the Blues - they are finals bound for 2022 :D

Here's what I don't want to hear next March...

Blues will be without X, Y and Z, but hope to have A, B and C ready to for round 1 after missing most of the pre-season...

How good would it be instead to hear:
Blues will have a selection dilemma for Round 1 with near a full list and strong performances through the practice matches from some of their young guns...

Well said. The seeds of our current malaise were planted well before the salary cap fiasco.

The Elliott-led administration of the 90s refused to adapt to the new playing field. Carlton wanted to do things the way Carlton always did things, and stuff the rest of the competition. And for a while it worked, bringing us a flag in '95, with one of the best sides the comp has seen. But clubs like Sydney, Geelong and Hawthorn now searched for new ways to succeed in a new competition - now national; players now fully professional; the draft acting as a leveler; focus on large stadiums and a significant jump in TV revenue; players now having a significantly stronger hand. Carlton held on to Princes Park long after rival clubs had conglomerated to the 'G and the new Docklands stadium; by the time we made the inevitable move, the other major clubs had the better of the deals, and we'd wasted a fortune on a white elephant stadium. Where other teams began investing in scouting and development of young talent, we ignored the draft, preferring to attract seasoned players to bolster our side with open cheque-books to attract the best. Where other clubs began working on developing strong club cultures to become 'destination' clubs, at Carlton, players were treated like cattle - should feel 'priveleged' to play for the Blues, don't like that then leave. And finally, we flaunted the salary cap rules - yes, as did everyone else through the 90s. But after significant penalties handed out to Carlton, Melbourne and Essendon in particular, and an amnesty period granted for clubs to clean up their act, Carlton went right on back to a sophisticated off-the-books payment system. The penalty was severe, but more than justified in the circumstances.

By 2002, our brilliant team of the 90s was done, and our failure to invest in the future led to our worst season in history - our first wooden spoon. A spectacular drop after playing finals the year before. And it's worth noting that this fall occurred before the salary cap fiasco - that came after the end of that season. We were already a depleted side, at the bottom of the ladder, and now hit with penalties that would ensure our stay at the bottom would be a long one.

20 years on, are we a better club? We've become one of the clubs we used to point at and laugh. I hope the changes we've seen this year are a sign of better things to come, only time will tell. But it would be foolish to suggest that we were not the agents of our own demise.

We are Carlton, **** the rest, hey?

Fitzroy's BOG VS Carlton too...I saw him run rings around us at Princess Park in 1980 when he dominated his wing with major metres gained [ not that it was measured in those days] he was very fast and elusive with beautiful long kicking into the forward line.... I believe he was recruited next year by the Blues on the strength of that 1 great game be played against us
[ although he played 16 games for Fitzroy in his debut year]
