Am I the only one who thinks “due process” is overrated? To think we would follow “due process” and then arrive at a decision that another coach is more qualified and suited is ridiculous to me. Clarkson has the runs on the board and that is clear for all to see. Who else would even come remotely close?

That said, I honestly feel bad for rutten. I would have liked to see him continue and succeed and don’t think he really got a good shot at it. I really hope he continues in coaching if it’s not with us.

Our list is atrociously inept in my opinion and no coach to ever hope to succeed with that. I really hope that whoever is there next year does a massive clean out aka clarkson’s first few years at hawthorn.
Were you thinking our list was bad this time last year? I doubt it. Malthouse pre season thought we had a chance of a premiership. Our midfield hype preseason was huge.
I agree if we find another coach tough calls need to be made.
Out Heppell, Cutler, Ham, Waterman, Phillips etc. and standards need to be made.

i think in this case, yes it is

We need a harder edge and probably another "figurehead" coach. but not one trying to mend a broken club. One who will drive results and standards.

After today's events, do we have a process in place to decide who our next coach is? After all, we've just announced an external review. How long will that take? Should we not wait for that to be completed before deciding on a coach?

It can't be Truck now, we've laid a giant turd in his bed and told him to sleep in it. Can we announce Clarkson this week based purely on credentials? Do we look at and interview anyone else?

A lot of people have been seduced, cause, Clarkson! Our problems as a club run far deeper than Truck. If we dont fix them, history will repeat in a few years time. Maybe Hepp can coach us then, cause Essendon.

* off the shadow puppets in the background who are pulling the strings of this club. Haven't they done enough damage in the last 10 years!!!
I think it is a matter of if we can get Clarkson we grab him, otherwise we will stick with Truck no matter how hard that makes it for him.

I don't think it's ever overrated. If Clarkson is the best candidate the proper process should identify him and lead to him being offered the job. But there's been plenty of times where the more highly rated (externally at least) was not offered the job and the eventual candidate went on to have a very successful career. Clarkson was one of those I believe - a bit of a left field candidate among some fairly big names. Bomber was as well.

Ultimately I don't think were are missing out on much by skipping due process in this case. Clarkson would be a great get as much for the authority he wields as his actual coaching expertise.

I would think that if arguably the best coach of the modern era can't get our list to function then the problem lies elsewhere.

Which is why even though I think Rutten deserves a) another year and b) considerably more respect than what he has been shown this year, Clarkson would be a huge boon for the club. With a coach like Rutten there's always the questions - is he up to it? Is he lacking in some aspects and causing us to underperform as a club?

There's none of that with Clarkson. If after a couple of years we're still s**t you can point the finger anywhere but at him. Is it the football department, is it the list, is it the list management, is it the administration, is coteries meddling, and so on. It removes 'sack the coach' from the arsenal of excuses shitty clubs have on hand and forces us to maybe address our issues.
Oh, i definitely think the problems lie elsewhere. I'm not saying Truck will be the best coach ever, but problems with player management since the Saga have not helped. They have answered to no one since then and have been allowed to play their own game.

We have too many puppeteers, with too much money pulling too many strings within the club. Until we sort out the shit behind the scenes, it won't matter who our coach is.

I'm numb to our shit losses over the years, but FMD, I'm ****ing angry at the club with how today panned out.

Not even if he is in his 2nd year a achieving the same results as Truck?

Where does the club go if this doesn't work out? Sheeds turned our club around and turned us into a powerful club again, Clarkson will need to do the same.
Very much so, and particularly if , as is likely , he doesn't get instant results. People tend to think of Clarkson in terms of his coaching record from 2008 on. But in his first couple of years when he inherited a mediocre list, Hawthorns results were poor and they copped quite a few floggings. And then he was younger with plenty of fire in the belly. Does he still have that or will he just be looking to boost the superannuation fund. Good for him but with a long term contract , not so good for us if its not working the way we hoped. Maybe we will be forced to show patience which would be no bad thing. But at least he comes with a lot more authority over the players than any of our coaches since Hird: lets hope that currency is better spent.
My own view is we should do the external review even if that means missing Clarkson. If Rutten's position becomes untenable, as it seems to be, I don't think Lyon would be the worst alternative. At least you know adherence to defensive structures would be non-negotiable and he would have the strength to drop even senior players who didn't buy in .

I like your thinking but Essendon will find a way along the lines of pointing to Pagan and Malthouse at Carlton, Blight at St Kilda etc and just say he was a great coach but not a good fit at Essendon, then sack him.

Agree on those outs.

I was never sold on our midfield. Bar Jobe, we haven’t had a big bodied mid with class for 20+ years and still lack in this area. our Midfield and our entire list for that matter are not well balanced. dodoro is on record saying that he prioritises other areas, such as talls, and we’ve lacked a competitive midfield for more than 2 decades as a result. I’m really hoping he is shown the door during all of this.

that said, you’re right, this time last year I was more positive about our list like most others, but was never sold on them. I felt Malthouse’s a prediction was utterly ridiculous, as did plenty of others I guess.

Caro:

Mahoney and Rutten relationship is toxic

Rutten and Dodoro relationship is toxic

Huh
And wasnt it said recently there was unrest between Dodo and Mahoney aswell

If Dodoro is large piece of recruiting i think we keep him through this draft period than we assess. See how he gets on with the incoming then make a decision march time next year

Who are we finding in the recruiting space at the end of the season that knows all about this years draft is my concern
