ROUND EIGHT VFL PREVIEW – Box Hill Hawks vs. Williamstown
Saturday 24th May
Burbank Oval at 1:10pm

THE BOX HILL HAWKS will be in for a challenge this week when they meet ladder-leader Williamstown on Saturday at Burbank Oval.

The Seagulls have lost only once this season, by 22 points to Geelong in Round Four.
In contrast, the Hawks are still winless for the season. After a number of close results in a row they were disappointing last week, losing to Port Melbourne by 48 points.

Captain Alister Neville (31 possessions and two goals) and Josh Kennedy were Box Hill’s best players, while Cam Stokes scored three goals before he went down with a hamstring injury.

MEANWHILE, WILLIAMSTOWN are riding a wave of confidence, winning against the Bendigo Bombers last week and sitting atop of the VFL ladder.

Peter Street and Guy O’Keefe (five goals) were the best for the Seagulls, who kicked six goals in the second and fourth quarters.

Head to head:

Played 72: Box Hill 21, Williamstown 48, Drawn 3

The last time the sides met was in Round 8 of 2007, when Williamstown registered an even six-goal victory at Box Hill City Oval, 16.10.106 to 10.10.70.

Andrew Williams scored three goals for the Seagulls, while Paul Licuria and Ben Davies were also in Williamstown’s best. Jarryd Roughead (four goals) and Nick Smith were best for the Hawks, who were unable to recover after conceding five goals in the first quarter.

Players to watch:

Cam Hunter – valuable as a stopper on Port Melbourne’s small forwards last week. Looking to continue his form

Nathan Batsanis – a big week expected from the flashy midfielder

Digby Morrell – his experience will be needed against Williamstown in the forward line. Could be picked up by Western Bulldog Andrew McDougall

Reserves:

The Reserves will meet Williamstown on Saturday at City Oval for the first time since last year’s Elimination Final.
The Seagulls ran out 30-point winners, 24.11.155 to 18.12.120, despite seven combined goals from Hawks Anthony Marguccio and Gary Conyers.

Despite a convincing 50-point win over Port Melbourne last week, Box Hill will have its work cut out against the undefeated Gulls. The Round Seven match kicks off at 10:20am.

Make the trip out to Burbank Oval on Saturday to cheer on the Hawks. Box Hill pulled off some great victories last year against top sides Geelong and Sandringham; let’s hope they’re headed for a similar result. Go Hawks!

...you can assume the reserves play at the same venue.

Impressed with Whitecross, didn't get stacks of it, but he looks to create and has a powerful kick with good skills.

I wish Beau would play in front a little more

Few silly free kicks in our defensive 50

3rd Box Hill game i have seen this year.

I feel so sorry for our forwards. Midfielders time and again do not put the ball to advantage of a leading forward.

Dowler has certainly added some bulk this season and i have noticed he has been missed on leads 4 times in the first half.

I am sure when Dowler gets his chance you will see him go ok at Hawthorn because atleast he will have some decent delivery.

Thorp was moving ok until he copped an injury:thumbsdown:

Renouf was getting some ball but Peter Street was having a huge influence in the first half.
