Boxing Day test. AUS vs WI

They've been getting worse for twenty years.
The West Indies were already on the slide in early 1990's. Just took 5 years to finally take the number one title off them at home.
In 1999 when they got bowled out for 51 in under 20 overs that was the time point of when they were clearly not a power of any kind any more. A few singular brilliant innings from Lara won a few Tests before the total fall from grace was complete but as a team in general they had no fighting character and pride much more; Rarely seen any sight of it since then.

Someone posted a thread on the AFL forum the other day asking whether the Hawks great 1989 side if it was taken in a time machine straight from that actual September day could beat the 2014 bottom of the table Melbourne side. A whole lot of people thought Melbourne due to advances in training, fitness and professionalism would comfortably beat Hawthorn.

Using that same scenario how would this current Windies side compete with the 1981 side for example? Would the current side due to advances in training, fitness and exposure to the multi formats of the game today have an advantage over the 81 Windies who really only played tests and were still learning how to play one dayers?

After carefully watching as much footage of the 81 side as I could I deduced that the 81 side were in fact roughly 5x better at batting, 5x better at bowling and about 10x better at fielding. They'd beat them in 3 days in a test, slaughter them in a one dayer and given a couple of practise T20 games would flog them at that too. This current mob don't have a single player that would get a game in their 1981 side and the West Indies 1983-86 side was much better still.

Anyone disagree?

I think you are being generous to current team to get to the third day of a Test against their 81 boys.
Looking at current West Indies team I was thinking today whom in their side if on our side, might get a game. Maybe Bravo would be on outskirts of team like Shaun Marsh but even that is probably generous. I'm probably more stunned just how ordinary their bowling has been.
The 81 West Indies side would destroy our present Australian side within 3 days. They knock over West Indies 2016 version in two. Cannot see them making 100 in any innings against Roberts, Holding, Garner and Marshall types.
Hate to imagine what that bowling line-up would do to Warner, Burns, Khawaja, Smith, Voges and M Marsh.
We could easily be knocked over for under 200 on same pitch we just made 3 for 551 declared.

I would argue that they peaked in around 1985, but have been sliding steadily downwards since Clive Lloyd retired. It is a testament to the talent in some later West Indian sides that it took some years for it to become clear that any sort of decline was taking place - and even then they were the best side in the world until 1995.

Meanwhile, the modern Australian team's slide became obvious just one season after McWarne - the batting remained strong, but the bowling and fielding clearly weren't. Selection, coaching and management blunders obviously accelerated the process of course, until we finally had a side that usually couldn't do anything (2010/11).

May 2015: Australia goes to the Caribbean and smashes the West Indies, and then loses the Ashes in England.
December 2015: Australia smashes the West Indies in Australia, and then goes to New Zealand.

I hope we're not setting a trend here, or there'll be some very happy Kiwi fans in February!!!!!

Agree with all bar T20. Windies are a very good T20 team.

Adam Voges, Usman Khawaja and Joe Burns have played 31 matches between them for 9 centuries.

Shane Watson played 59 and scored 4.

LEL.
I reckon even Watto would have scored a ton against this mob. Hell - just for the fun of it, why don't we promote Lyon to number 3 in Sydney: even he might give 3 figures a nudge :)

Did West Indies stop letting us tour when they used to thump us in 3 days?? Id certainly be looking at having them tour before Christmas but shunning them completely won't help International Cricket or West Indian cricket.

Obvious pattern. Can't believe I missed it earlier.

The choice is listen to Richie Richardson get interviewed on the ABC or watch whatever the hell the idiot brigade on 9 was just doing. Thank you mute button.

Watto would have made 30-40 because thats what watto does
What Watto also does is make big scores when the pressure is off: 176 at The Oval, 103 in Perth. The only pressure in this series is, who can take the most wickets and who can make the most runs?

Watching Stevie Wright on YouTube, and sparking a fat one in his honour is the way to go.

It's almost certain WI won't play Boxing Day ever again, and may never in Australia again in their current form after this series.

Time to give teams a go like Bangladesh or Ireland who actually want to play
I would pay a lot more money to see us against Bangladesh and Ireland as opposed to the West Indies (if ticket prices were based that way)
